Why Is My Game Crashing When I Alt-Tab? Troubleshooting the Issue

An Alt-Tab failure can be a real game crash or only a display hang. Identify the symptom, test Borderless Windowed mode, and isolate overlays, drivers, and display settings before considering hardware changes.

If a game crashes, freezes, or goes black when you press Alt+Tab, the shortcut is usually exposing a problem with fullscreen display switching, a graphics driver, an overlay, or the monitor setup—not damaging your PC. Start by identifying what actually happened, then try Borderless Windowed mode and temporarily disable overlays before moving on to driver or hardware checks.

First, identify what “crashing” looks like

Note whether the game closes, stops responding, or merely loses its picture. If it affects only one game, begin with that game’s settings and files. If several games fail, look first at shared components such as the driver, overlays, Windows graphics settings, or display configuration.

What you see Where to investigate first
The game closes immediately to the desktop Game files, mods, overlays, rendering API, or a game/driver exception.
It closes after a delay Check the game’s crash log and Windows records; a driver recovery or application error may be involved.
The screen goes black or flickers, but audio continues Display-mode transition, refresh rate, HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR), monitor link, or driver.
The image freezes while the game or audio continues The game or graphics path may be hung even though the process is still running. Check Task Manager before calling it a crash.
The game stays open but stops responding to input Check window focus, overlays, anti-cheat behavior, and window management.
The whole PC freezes, reboots, or shows a blue screen Treat this as a system-level problem involving a driver, hardware stability, power, memory, or BIOS—not just a game setting.

Try Borderless Windowed mode first

Exclusive fullscreen can give a game more direct control over display mode, resolution, refresh rate, or HDR. Switching away may make Windows and the game renegotiate how the picture is presented. Borderless Windowed runs the game in a desktop-sized window and often makes switching apps less disruptive. It is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee of better performance or lower latency: results vary with the game, graphics API, monitor, Windows configuration, and GPU.

  1. Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
  2. Change Exclusive Fullscreen to Borderless Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen.
  3. Apply the setting and restart the game if requested.
  4. Switch away with Alt+Tab a few times at a normal pace. If it is stable, the original fullscreen mode is a likely trigger.

If the game has no borderless option, try ordinary Windowed mode as a baseline. Intel also recommends testing Borderless Windowed for games that behave badly when leaving fullscreen: Intel’s fullscreen-game black-screen guidance.

Test Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations separately

On Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games is a per-game setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft says it changes presentation to a newer flip model and can interact with Auto HDR and VRR. Because that path may help one game and upset another, toggle it as an A/B test rather than treating it as a universal fix.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Under Custom options for apps, select the game and choose Options. If the game is missing, add its executable.
  3. Record the current setting. Toggle Optimizations for windowed games; if relevant, test Auto HDR separately.
  4. Select Save, fully close the game, and relaunch it before testing.

Microsoft notes that Auto HDR automatically enables windowed-game optimizations; turn Auto HDR off before disabling the optimization. If the toggle changes nothing, restore the original setting. Menu labels may vary by Windows version. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game settings guide.

Do not confuse the two fullscreen-optimization controls

Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11 Settings is not the same as Disable fullscreen optimizations on a game’s executable. The latter is a reversible compatibility test, particularly for an older title; it can also change or remove beneficial presentation behavior, so it may worsen performance, latency, HDR, or VRR.

  1. Find the game’s executable, right-click it, and select Properties > Compatibility.
  2. Note whether Disable fullscreen optimizations is checked.
  3. Test the opposite setting, select Apply, then relaunch the game and test.
  4. Restore the original checkbox if the result is worse or unchanged.

Change this only as a separate test from Windows 11’s windowed-game setting. Intel’s guidance discusses fullscreen optimizations and borderless mode as title-specific troubleshooting options.

Isolate overlays and other hook-based utilities

Overlays and recording tools can hook into a game’s rendering process. A focus or presentation change during Alt+Tab can expose a conflict. Disable them before uninstalling anything:

  • Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA or AMD overlay, and Intel overlay features.
  • MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner on-screen display, OBS Game Capture, Overwolf, and third-party recording or streaming tools.
  • ReShade, shader injectors, frame-limit tools, RGB or peripheral utilities, macro software, and other monitoring tools.
  1. Turn off overlays and hook-based utilities, then restart the game.
  2. Test Alt+Tab.
  3. If stable, re-enable one utility at a time, restarting the game as needed, until the problem returns.

This identifies a possible conflict while preserving the option to use the features you need. Game Mode is not a guaranteed cause; reports in Microsoft Q&A are community troubleshooting, not proof of a universal Windows defect.

Update or roll back the graphics driver

If the issue began after a driver update, test a rollback before assuming the newest driver is the best choice for that game. Otherwise, check the GPU maker’s official download page. Laptop owners should check their laptop manufacturer’s guidance first, because OEM drivers can be customized for that system.

To try the available Windows rollback: open Device Manager > Display adapters > your GPU > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. The button may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore. Alternatively, download a known-good prior version from the manufacturer and follow its installation instructions.

There is documented precedent for a driver-specific Alt-Tab fault: AMD’s Adrenalin 25.3.2 release notes described intermittent application or system crashes while switching during gameplay on some Radeon products, including some RX 6000-series cards. That note documents an issue in that release; it does not establish a defect in every Radeon card or current driver. See AMD’s release notes.

When an ordinary update is not enough

As a next step, use the GPU installer’s clean-install option if it offers one. Download the driver first, reboot after installation, and test before adding companion apps or overlays back. A clean install may remove custom profiles. For laptops, follow the system maker’s driver guidance; AMD specifically notes that OEM drivers may be customized and validated for system-specific features in its release notes. Avoid third-party driver-download sites. A more thorough cleanup utility such as DDU is an advanced option, not the first step; obtain it only from its official source and follow its documentation.

Check the game’s files, mods, and rendering API

If only one title is affected, check its installation and add-ons before changing Windows broadly. Verification compares installed files with the launcher’s expected files; it does not repair a graphics driver.

Steam

  1. Open Steam > Library.
  2. Right-click the game and select Properties > Installed Files.
  3. Choose Verify integrity of game files.

Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Library and find the game.
  2. Click the three dots beside it and choose Manage.
  3. Select Verify.

Epic also recommends file verification for PC game problems: Epic’s PC crash troubleshooting guidance.

For a controlled test, remove or disable mods, ReShade, custom DLLs, unofficial launchers, custom launch options, and frame-rate tools. If the title supports another rendering API, test it—such as DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12, or Vulkan instead of DirectX. Also test default graphics settings, a capped frame rate, lower VRAM-heavy settings, and HDR, ray tracing, or frame generation turned off. Change one item at a time and record the result. Launch parameters such as -dx11 are game-specific; they may be unsupported, ignored, or blocked by anti-cheat.

Test the display chain if the picture goes black or flickers

A black screen during switching can come from a display-mode transition rather than a game process closing. Change one display variable at a time, then restore settings that did not affect the symptom.

  1. Temporarily disconnect the second monitor and test with one display.
  2. Match the game’s refresh rate to the Windows desktop refresh rate. If needed, test a lower rate such as 120 Hz or 60 Hz.
  3. Turn HDR off temporarily, then test. On Windows 11, remember that Auto HDR also affects windowed-game optimizations.
  4. Turn G-SYNC, FreeSync, or other VRR features off temporarily.
  5. If available, test another HDMI or DisplayPort cable and port.
  6. Re-enable each feature individually to find which change affects the result.

These tests isolate the display path; a result alone does not prove that a monitor or cable is defective. Multi-monitor setups with different refresh rates can also make switching more complicated.

Check the GPU selection on a laptop

Hybrid-graphics laptops may use an integrated GPU for the internal panel and a discrete GPU for games; switching behavior can also change with power or an external monitor. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game, choose Options, and test High performance. Restart the game afterward. Other available preferences include Let Windows decide and Power saving. Keep the integrated GPU enabled unless the laptop maker’s instructions say otherwise; the internal display may depend on it. For diagnosis, also compare behavior on AC power with battery power and with or without an external monitor.

Return unstable tuning to stock before testing hardware

An abrupt change in graphics workload or display state can expose unstable tuning that ordinary gameplay does not. Temporarily return GPU overclocks or undervolts, CPU overclocks, XMP or EXPO memory profiles, motherboard auto-overclocking, and aggressive power profiles to default. Record or photograph the original settings first. Do not change BIOS voltages casually.

NVIDIA lists returning GPU clocks to reference values, setting XMP/EXPO memory profiles to default, and clean driver installation among possible crash-diagnosis steps: NVIDIA’s crash-diagnosis guidance. If the whole PC reboots or blue-screens, investigate broader stability—such as temperatures, memory, power, BIOS, or chipset—rather than treating it as a routine fullscreen issue. Stop testing if temperatures or shutdown behavior are unsafe.

Use Windows repair tools only when the symptoms justify them

Install pending Windows updates and restart first. If broader Windows corruption is plausible, run System File Checker from an administrator terminal. These commands repair Windows components, not game files or GPU drivers, and are not a promised fix for Alt-Tab crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish.
  3. If Windows reports component-store problems, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth from the same administrator session.
  4. Restart if prompted, then retest the game.

If you suspect background software, a clean boot can help isolate it, but use Microsoft’s instructions for your Windows version and restore normal startup afterward.

Gather evidence and escalate with a reproducible test

Check Windows Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer for entries at the exact time of the failure. An unrelated warning is not proof of a cause: focus on matching application errors, driver or display events, and the game’s own logs. Note whether the game process remains in Task Manager and whether audio continues.

Generate a DxDiag report by searching Windows for dxdiag, opening the tool, and saving the report. DxDiag includes DirectX and graphics-driver information and can provide limited error details; see EA’s DxDiag guide, Epic’s report instructions, or NVIDIA’s DxDiag instructions.

Send the game developer or GPU vendor a concise record containing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Game name and version; Windows edition, version, and build.
  • GPU model and driver version; CPU, RAM, and monitor setup.
  • Display mode, rendering API, HDR and VRR state, and number of connected displays.
  • Which overlays, mods, and monitoring utilities were enabled.
  • What you see, whether audio continues, and whether the process remains open.
  • The exact time, recent game/Windows/driver/BIOS changes, relevant event details, game logs, and DxDiag report.
  • Steps that reproduce the failure and which single-variable tests changed it.

Prioritize game support when one title fails, especially after verification and a no-mod test. Prioritize the GPU or system maker when several games fail after a clean driver test or when a reboot or blue screen occurs. A reproducible crash at stock settings with matching logs is more useful than a list of unrelated Event Viewer warnings.

When to stop changing settings

Do not buy a GPU, monitor, or PC-optimizer app merely because Alt+Tab triggers a failure. Hardware replacement is only worth considering if repeatable tests point to hardware instability—for example, multiple games fail at stock settings across display configurations, or diagnostics reveal a broader fault. Likewise, avoid registry tweaks such as MPO workarounds and permanent disabling of security features before the reversible tests above; community reports about Windows updates or Game Mode do not establish a single Windows-wide cause.
