For a smoother start in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, choose the control scheme that feels familiar, scan unfamiliar objects and enemies when you need information, and use lock-on as the foundation for learning combat. Samus’s abilities—including psychic powers and Morph Ball—are not just weapons: they also help solve puzzles and open routes.
Which controls should you choose?
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is available for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. On Switch 2, the game offers three control approaches. Start with the one closest to what you already know; if aiming feels awkward, try changing sensitivity or remapping controls before deciding a scheme does not suit you.
| Scheme | How it works | Who may prefer it |
|---|---|---|
| Dual Stick Fusion | Both analogue sticks handle movement and aiming. | Players familiar with modern console first-person games. |
| Pointer Fusion | The left stick moves Samus, while motion controls aim. | Players who prefer gyro-style aiming. |
| Mouse controls | Use the right Joy-Con 2 as a mouse on a surface. | Players who want mouse-style aiming on Switch 2. |
Nintendo describes these Switch 2 options on its Switch 2 edition page. Mouse control is specifically a Joy-Con 2 feature; do not assume it is available on the original Switch. A community-authored GameFAQs controls guide, version 1.0 dated January 4, 2026, describes Dual Stick as similar to modern console FPS controls and Pointer as gyro-based aiming. It also notes that most controls can be remapped. Button assignments vary with scheme and may be changed, so learn the actions—scan, lock-on, fire, and visor switching—rather than relying on a button list that may not match your setup.
When should you scan?
Make scanning a habit whenever you encounter an unfamiliar enemy, device, outlined object, statue, or ruin. Nintendo’s game description specifically recommends scanning stone statues and ruins for clues about how to advance. If a mechanism’s purpose is unclear or you are unsure what a creature can do, the Scan Visor can provide context before you commit to a guess.

Scanning also helps build understanding of Viewros. Tom’s Guide reports that scans reveal information about creatures, fauna, and structures, and that boss scans can offer useful hints. Scan entries are also treated as collectibles in Nintendo Life’s guide, which separates tips and scan-entry coverage from later walkthrough and boss material. You do not need to assume every scan is mandatory for progression: use it when you want a clue, context, or a fuller record of what you have found.
How do lock-on and dodging help in combat?
When you are learning an enemy’s attacks, lock on so you can keep your attention on the target while moving to avoid danger. Tom’s Guide describes using the left trigger to lock on and dodge in four directions. Treat that as a practical reviewer-reported combat approach: lock on, watch for an attack, then dodge directionally rather than standing still to trade shots.
Scan an unfamiliar enemy or boss before settling on a tactic. A scan may reveal a hint, and it can help you understand what you are facing; it does not guarantee a single correct strategy. Samus’s psychic abilities also let her steer charged-shot trajectories, giving you another way to control attacks. The available guidance supports that as a combat tool, but not a specific boss-by-boss prescription.

Why do abilities matter for exploration?
Nintendo describes the central goal as exploring Viewros, finding a way home, scanning ruins for clues, fighting alien creatures, and using psychic abilities to clear a path. Those powers serve exploration as well as combat: psychic abilities can operate mechanisms and reach areas that were previously inaccessible. The Control Beam is therefore worth remembering as a tool for interacting with the environment, not merely another way to attack.
Morph Ball changes how Samus moves through spaces and, according to Tom’s Guide, is used for puzzles and doors. The Vi-O-La motorcycle is for traversal and open-area combat, according to Nintendo’s U.S. product page. As a general exploration habit, consider revisiting a route when a newly acquired ability suggests an obstacle might now be solvable; this is useful genre-informed advice, not a guarantee that every old path has changed.

Nintendo Australia lists Quality and Performance display modes for the Switch 2 edition. Its stated output options are docked 4K/60 or 1080p/120, and handheld or tabletop 1080p/60 or 720p/120; the selected mode depends on display support, with HDR caveats. These are listed mode specifications, not a promise that every display or setup can use every option.
Nintendo Support lists software update Ver. 1.1.0, released December 3, 2025. The notes say it adjusted some enemy difficulty in Hard mode and made gameplay fixes. For current troubleshooting or later changes, check Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4: Beyond update history; the page may have changed since that version was listed.
How to keep the guide spoiler-light
General control and scanning advice does not require a walkthrough. If you want route-by-route directions, collectible locations, or boss solutions, be aware that walkthroughs can reveal later areas and encounters. Nintendo Life flags spoilers in later guide sections and distinguishes its general tips from walkthrough and boss coverage, so use those sections selectively.
