Its campaign is an origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, so earlier games are optional context, not prerequisites. If you want a short primer, start with Gears of War: Reloaded; for more background, follow it with Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3.
Do you need to play Gears of War before E-Day?
No. Xbox describes E-Day as taking place fourteen years before the original game and following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first emerges. That makes it a natural entry point for newcomers rather than a sequel that depends on knowledge of earlier campaigns. Xbox’s E-Day page lists the setting and game details.

The developers have framed the game as an origin story for Marcus and Dom and their bond, before they become the familiar characters of the original trilogy. Brand Director Nicole Fawcette also described it as a new mainline entry set earlier in the timeline, not a spin-off. The older games can deepen recognition and context, but they are not required to understand the premise.
Which games are worth playing for extra context?
Gears of War: Reloaded
Choose Reloaded if you want to play just one game first. It is the original Gears of War, remastered and modernized, and introduces Marcus, the COG and the world as it is known in the series. That makes it the most direct optional primer for the characters and setting that E-Day revisits at an earlier point. Xbox’s official franchise catalog identifies it as the remastered original.

Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3
Play these after Reloaded if you want the original trilogy’s broader conflict and the series’ devastated-world baseline. Gears of War 2 escalates the war with a threat from below, while Gears of War 3 follows survivors trying to save humanity. They are useful for seeing what the characters and world become, but neither is a prerequisite for an origin story. The official Gears of War franchise page lists the games and their series context.
Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment is optional timeline context. The franchise page describes it as a prequel about the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. Since E-Day focuses on the first days of the invasion, Judgment is not needed to set up its central Marcus-and-Dom story.

Gears 4, Gears 5 and Gears Tactics
Gears 4 and Gears 5 follow a later storyline centered on JD Fenix and Kait Diaz, so save them for after E-Day if you want to follow the series forward in time. The Coalition has said that setting E-Day earlier does not mean abandoning the stories told in those games. Gears Tactics is a separate squad tactics game; it is listed among the franchise’s games, but official E-Day materials do not present it as preparation for the campaign.

These are suggested routes, not an official required order. The extra context can make the contrast in E-Day’s earlier setting more striking: in the September 2026 Xbox Podcast, Creative Director Matt Searcy discussed showing society before the destruction seen in the later games.

Can you play E-Day now?
Yes. As of October 7, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day as released on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, with availability through Game Pass. Xbox’s FAQ also lists Steam, Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Check the current Xbox listing for regional purchase and service availability.
