No: early previews did not fail to recognize Metroid Prime 4: Beyond as a Metroid game. They disagreed about how its companions, psychic abilities, and connected hub changed the series’ familiar isolation and pacing. Some reviewers questioned the shift; others pointed to classic exploration, combat puzzles, and recognizable “greatest hits.” The game launched on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4, 2025.
What changed in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond?
Nintendo’s description sends Samus to the planet Viewros after an accident, where she must scan, fight, and explore using her weapons, new psychic abilities, and the Vi-O-La bike. Those additions sit alongside the scanning, equipment, weapons, and hostile environments associated with the Prime series (Nintendo’s launch announcement).

Preview coverage also drew attention to a companion who talks to Samus and to a hub connecting distinct areas. Those choices raised questions about the series’ solitary atmosphere and its rhythm. They did not erase the recognizable work of exploring environments and solving combat encounters.
Why did previews disagree about the game’s identity?
Nintendo Life’s Jim Norman highlighted a concern that the “feeling of isolation, loneliness” could be undermined by a character who “blathers away at you incessantly.” That was Norman’s reaction in his hands-on preview, not a consensus verdict. A roundup by Nintendo Life preserved a range of responses: it quotes IGN saying the game “likely won’t redefine Metroid in any meaningful way” while praising its exploration, combat, art direction, and technical performance; VGC describing the opening as not feeling much like Metroid; and Polygon calling it “a tonal divergence” that “still plays the series’ greatest hits” (Nintendo Life’s preview roundup).

Both choices are HDR compatible.
The disagreement was about how much the new structure and tone mattered, not whether familiar Metroid elements were present. The previews included both reservations about the opening and companion dialogue and positive recognition of exploration, combat puzzles, and abilities that alter how players read their surroundings.
Why did the developers add a hub and a bike?
In a February 2026 interview, producer Kensuke Tanabe explained that Metroid’s ability-gated progression creates a design tension with an unrestricted open world: if players can travel widely from the start, gaining abilities no longer expands their reach in the same way. He described a limited area as one possible response to interest in a more open Metroid, with the bike offering a change of rhythm from the series’ constricted, tense play (GamesRadar+’s interview with Tanabe).

- 1. Explore the mysterious planet Viewros as the renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran
- 2. Scan your surroundings for clues and make the most of your equipment and weapons to survive
- 3. Use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities—and her technologically advanced bike, the Vi-O-La—to traverse and explore the environment.
- 4. Aim with a Joy-Con 2 controller as a mouse
- 5. Experience enhanced resolution, framerate, and load times in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game
That rationale helps explain the design, but it does not settle whether it works in practice. Beyond is not described here as a fully open-world game: the hub connects distinct zones, and the bike changes how Samus travels between them.

GamesRadar+’s post-release review drew a distinction between the authored zones and the travel linking them. It praised the atmosphere and the design of individual areas, but found movement through Sol Valley, backtracking, loading transitions, and repeated returns to install upgrades tedious. The reviewer also found some companion interactions brief and underdeveloped (GamesRadar+’s review).

That assessment suggests a useful way to understand the mixed reception: the game’s enclosed areas can deliver the deliberate exploration and atmosphere associated with Prime, while journeys between them can feel like friction rather than a welcome change of pace. It is one outlet’s review, not a universal player response.

Nintendo Life’s retrospective says Nintendo halted the first development attempt and announced a restart with Retro Studios in January 2019, after Nintendo said progress had not met its standard for a Metroid Prime sequel. It places the first gameplay reveal and full title in June 2024, followed by the December 4, 2025 launch (Nintendo Life’s development retrospective). The lengthy wait gave expectations time to build, but it does not make the preview reactions any more unanimous.

What differs between the Switch and Switch 2 versions?
The key distinction established by the sources is platform: Nintendo released a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as well as a Nintendo Switch version. TechRadar reported 4K at 60fps in Quality Mode and 1080p at 120fps in Performance Mode during its Switch 2 hands-on session; those are reported settings from that session, not results from a controlled benchmark. The outlet also covered control options (TechRadar’s Switch 2 hands-on).
Those reported modes may help someone choosing between editions, but the evidence does not establish that a Switch 2 console or Pro Controller is necessary to play. The practical choice depends first on which Nintendo system the player owns and whether the reported Switch 2 options matter to them.
How long does it take to finish?
GamesRadar+’s reviewer reported a playthrough of about 12 hours with around 90% of upgrades and scans. That is one reviewer’s account, not a general completion-time estimate; playtime will vary with exploration and completion goals.
