mfc42deu.dll is a genuine Microsoft localization DLL used by older Visual C++ 6.0 and Visual Basic 6.0 applications. If Windows says it is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the specific legacy program that needs it rather than downloading a replacement and copying it into a Windows system folder.
The safest repair order is:
- Identify the program showing the error.
- Repair that program from Windows or its original installer.
- Reinstall the exact application if Repair is unavailable.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Verify that the program is 32-bit and that its dependencies are intact.
- Use Windows repair commands only if other Windows components are also damaged.
What mfc42deu.dll is
| Detail | What it means |
|---|---|
| Filename | mfc42deu.dll |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Product family | Microsoft Visual C++ and MFC 4.2-era components |
| Function | German-language MFC resources |
| Architecture | 32-bit/x86 |
| Main runtime | No |
| Windows component | No |
| Typical users | Legacy Visual C++ 6.0/MFC and Visual Basic 6.0 applications |
The file contains German-language resources such as translated strings, menus, dialog text, and other interface resources. It is not normally the code-bearing MFC runtime itself. The main MFC runtime files from this generation include mfc42.dll and mfc42u.dll; mfc42deu.dll supplies localized resources for applications that were built or packaged with German support.

Microsoft describes localized MFC files as resource-only DLLs in its MFC localization documentation. Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 support documentation also lists mfc42deu.dll among localization-support binaries.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That classification matters. mfc42deu.dll is not a normal Windows system file that Windows Update or System File Checker is expected to restore. Microsoft specifically states that these localization-support binaries are not shipped in Windows and should be distributed with the application that needs them.

What the error usually looks like
The wording depends on whether the failure happens while starting the application or while Windows is loading one of its dependencies. Common messages include:
The program can't start because mfc42deu.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
This application failed to start because mfc42deu.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
Error loading mfc42deu.dll. The specified module could not be found.
The code execution cannot proceed because mfc42deu.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
mfc42deu.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media
or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
A missing-file message usually points to an incomplete installation, deletion, quarantine event, or a program looking in the wrong location. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that mfc42deu.dll is present but one of its own dependencies is missing.
The “not designed to run on Windows” wording is more suspicious. It can indicate a damaged DLL, an incorrectly replaced file, a wrong-architecture file, or a legacy application whose installation has been partially overwritten.
Fix 1: Repair the application that shows the error
This is the most likely fix because mfc42deu.dll belongs with the application, not with Windows itself.
Before repairing anything, close the affected program. If you do not know which program is responsible, look at the error window title and the executable path if one is displayed. A shortcut can also reveal the target:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read the Target field.
- Note the program name and installation folder.
Do not assume that the application is the last program you installed. Old startup utilities, accounting programs, database clients, industrial software, games, and language-specific business applications can load this file when Windows starts or when another launcher runs.
Repair from Windows 11 Settings
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option preserves the application’s data in many cases, but its availability depends on how the program was packaged. Microsoft documents these repair paths in its guide to repairing apps and programs in Windows.

Repair from Control Panel
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:

appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Find the affected program in Programs and Features.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Test the program again.
Some older installers show a maintenance screen with choices such as Repair, Modify, and Remove. Choose Repair first. If the installer offers to replace missing files, allow it to do so.
If Repair completes but the error remains, run the same maintenance program again and choose Change or Modify to check whether German language support, MFC support, or an optional runtime component was left out.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact legacy application
If Repair is unavailable or does not restore the file, reinstall the program from its original vendor media or the current download supplied by the software publisher.
Do not start by downloading mfc42deu.dll from a generic DLL archive. The affected application may require several matching files, a particular language resource, a specific directory, or a legacy installer action. Replacing only the named DLL can leave the actual problem untouched.
Use this order:
- Back up the application’s documents, saved games, databases, templates, license files, and configuration data.
- Confirm that you have the original installer, installation media, or a trusted vendor download.
- If the program has its own uninstaller, use it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows after uninstalling.
- Install the application again using its original setup program.
- Choose the correct language or localization options during setup.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Launch the application from its newly installed shortcut.
- If the program still fails, record the complete error text and the executable path.
For a very old program, compatibility settings may help the installer run, but they do not replace the program’s missing files. To try compatibility mode:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose a suitable older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer as administrator if the vendor’s instructions require it.
Use compatibility settings for the installer only when necessary. Do not randomly enable every compatibility option, because some old programs depend on particular paths, permissions, or copy-protection components that require separate handling.
If the application has a Verify or Repair command
Some launchers and software managers include their own file verification function. Open the launcher, select the affected program, and look for commands named Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair installation, or Validate files.
The exact menu depends on the application. The important point is that the launcher can restore the correct file set for that program, including a language resource file that a generic runtime installer does not know about.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old DLL after an installation, update, or scan. That does not prove the detection is a false positive. A DLL with a familiar filename can still be modified, replaced, or bundled with unwanted software.
Check the quarantine history before restoring anything:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open the relevant detection to see its path and action.
- Compare the path with the affected application’s genuine installation directory.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are satisfied:
- It came from the original application installer or trusted vendor media.
- The detected path belongs to the expected application.
- The application itself is trusted and still supported by its publisher.
- You can verify the source and authenticity of the restored file.
- You are prepared to scan the complete application again.
Microsoft explains the risks and behavior of restoring quarantined items in its Protection History guidance.
If Defender repeatedly removes the file, do not repeatedly restore it or create a broad exclusion. Reinstall the application from trusted media and investigate the detection. If the file is not digitally signed, that alone does not establish that it is malicious, but it does mean provenance should be checked more carefully.
Fix 4: Verify the file, path, and architecture
mfc42deu.dll is a 32-bit/x86 file. A 32-bit program needs 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit process cannot load a 32-bit executable DLL, and a 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL in its place.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →On 64-bit Windows, legacy 32-bit applications run under WOW64. Microsoft explains this architecture in its 32-bit application guidance.
Do not interpret the presence of a SysWOW64 folder as proof that you should manually copy this file there. Windows uses system-directory redirection, and manually placing an application DLL in a system directory can affect unrelated programs. Microsoft documents that behavior in its file-system redirector guidance.
Search for existing copies
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem -Path "$env:windir","$env:ProgramFiles","${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}" `
-Filter mfc42deu.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime
This searches common Windows and application locations. It may take time on a large drive.
Interpret the results carefully:
- A copy beside the affected program is usually more relevant than a copy in an unrelated application.
- Several copies do not automatically mean that one should be deleted.
- A file in a temporary download, archive, or unknown directory should not be copied into the application folder without verifying its source.
- A file with an unexpected modification time may have been replaced or altered.
- A missing result supports the conclusion that the application installation is incomplete, but it does not identify which dependency is missing.
Check the signature and hash
For a specific file, replace the example path with the path you found:

- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\path\to\mfc42deu.dll"
Then calculate its hash:
Get-FileHash "C:\path\to\mfc42deu.dll" -Algorithm SHA256
You can also inspect the embedded version information:
(Get-Item "C:\path\to\mfc42deu.dll").VersionInfo | Format-List
The signature result helps determine whether the file is signed and whether the signature is valid. The hash is useful when comparing a file with a copy from the original installer or with a file supplied by the application publisher.
A familiar filename is not an authenticity check. If the file came from a random DLL download page, remove it from consideration and obtain the application again from its original source.
Fix 5: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. Windows can report that message when the named DLL exists but another library it needs cannot be loaded.

- Application-specific ActiveX controls
- Database drivers or licensing components
Do not download these files individually either. Reinstall the complete application or follow its vendor’s documented prerequisite procedure.
If you have access to the original installation media, compare the application directory with the files included by that installer. If the program was installed from a network share, verify that the share is available and that the installation completed without interruption.
If only one executable fails while another part of the same program works, check that you are launching the intended executable. Old software often leaves multiple copies after upgrades, and a shortcut may point to an obsolete installation directory.

Fix 6: Handle MFC language-file naming carefully
Older MFC deployment documentation describes a convention in which a language-specific file can be renamed to MFC42LOC.DLL and placed beside the matching MFC runtime. That is a deployment method for software developers and vendors, not a universal end-user repair step.
Do not rename mfc42deu.dll simply because a forum or error page suggests it. A program that explicitly requests mfc42deu.dll may require that exact filename. Renaming it can turn a missing-file error into a different loading failure.
Only use a different name when the original application vendor’s installation instructions specifically require it. Microsoft’s archived MFC localization deployment guidance explains the older convention, but it should not override the software publisher’s packaging instructions.
Fix 7: Do not assume the current Visual C++ Redistributable is the answer
The current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages are intended for newer Visual Studio toolsets. Microsoft’s current page lists packages such as vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe, but it does not document them as a source for the VC6-era German localization file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can review the supported packages on Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page, but installing the current x86 or x64 package solely because the filename begins with mfc is not a reliable repair.
The same applies to Visual Basic 6 packages. The VB6 SP6 security package, VB60SP6-KB926857-x86-ENU.msi, is a security rollup, not a documented standalone installer for mfc42deu.dll. Microsoft’s VB6 runtime-extended rollup also does not document this file in its manifest.
If the affected application’s vendor explicitly requires a particular redistributable, follow that requirement. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the application that originally supplied the file.
Fix 8: Run DISM and SFC only when Windows itself is damaged
Because Microsoft says mfc42deu.dll is not shipped in Windows, System File Checker normally will not restore it. DISM and SFC are appropriate when several Windows components are failing, Windows features are corrupted, or system repair errors appear alongside the application failure.

Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run SFC:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the application again. Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker guidance.
Possible outcomes include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows-protected files were not found to be damaged. Return to the application repair path.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some: Review the CBS log and continue investigating Windows corruption, but do not assume SFC will supply this non-shipped DLL.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: Check Windows servicing health, installation media, or organizational repair policies.
Running these commands repeatedly without recording the result does not improve the diagnosis. Note the exact output so you know whether Windows changed anything.
If manually comparing DISM and SFC results feels like guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required when the missing file belongs to a specific legacy application whose installer remains the definitive fix.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is reasonable when the error began immediately after an update, application installation, cleanup operation, or other identifiable system change and a suitable restore point exists.
To open it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review which applications, drivers, and settings will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
System Restore is not a normal source for mfc42deu.dll, and it should not be used as a substitute for reinstalling the affected application. It is useful when a recent system change clearly coincides with the failure and the restore point is trustworthy.
Fix 10: Investigate a driver or device change only when the timing supports it
mfc42deu.dll is not a driver, so reinstalling graphics, audio, chipset, or network drivers does not normally restore it. Driver troubleshooting becomes relevant only when the application failure appeared alongside a device change, a hardware utility update, or a vendor control panel that launches with the affected program.
To inspect a device driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only when you have a trusted source or Windows identifies a suitable update.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a device driver simply because the DLL error appears at the same time. Establish that the driver or its companion utility is actually involved.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If hunting through Device Manager means checking many hardware vendors and driver versions by hand, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the driver installation is performed by the full version, and updating drivers is not a substitute for reinstalling the legacy application that owns mfc42deu.dll.
Windows Features are usually not the fix
Windows optional features do not normally install this MFC localization resource. You can still check them when the affected program explicitly requires a Windows component such as .NET Framework or legacy media support:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the features requested by the application’s documentation.
- Select only the required feature.
- Choose OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Do not enable random features to make the DLL error disappear. mfc42deu.dll is a legacy application-distributed resource, not a Windows optional feature.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A downloaded file can have the correct filename and still be the wrong language, architecture, contents, or build. It may also be modified or bundled with unwanted software. A replacement file can hide the original installation problem while leaving other missing dependencies untouched.
Recommended Free Tools
The safe sources are:
- The affected application’s official installer.
- Original vendor installation media.
- A trusted download supplied by the software publisher.
- A documented enterprise software package maintained by the organization that deployed the application.
Do not copy it blindly into System32 or SysWOW64
System folders are not generic storage locations for application DLLs. On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 have specific architecture and redirection behavior. Putting an unrelated 32-bit DLL in either directory can create new conflicts and make future troubleshooting harder.

Application-local deployment, meaning the file is placed beside the executable by the application’s own installer, is usually safer.
Do not run regsvr32 on this file
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the Regsvr32 reference.
mfc42deu.dll is a resource-only MFC localization DLL, not a COM server. It does not need to be registered. If you run:
regsvr32 mfc42deu.dll
and Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that is expected. It does not prove that the file is corrupt.
Do not install every Visual C++ package
Installing multiple generations of Visual C++ Redistributables is not a substitute for identifying the program that needs this file. Side-by-side packages for modern Visual Studio versions do not automatically create the VC6-era German resource DLL.
Install a redistributable only when the application’s vendor documents it as a prerequisite.
Do not restore antivirus detections without checking provenance
A quarantine event may be a false positive, but it may also correctly identify a modified or unsafe file. Check the path, source, signature, hash, and original installer before restoring anything.
Do not delete other copies to “clean things up”
Several applications may carry their own legacy dependencies. Deleting copies from unrelated application folders can break programs that were working. Repair the affected application first and change only the files that belong to it.
How to identify the responsible application
When the error does not name the program clearly, collect these details:
- The complete error text.
- The title of the error dialog.
- The shortcut target or executable path.
- The time the problem began.
- Whether it followed an application update, Windows update, antivirus event, cleanup operation, or restore.
- Whether the problem affects every Windows account or only one.
- Whether another program from the same vendor still opens.
- Whether the application is installed under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86). - Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The signature and hash results for any existing copy.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows under WOW64, but its dependencies still need to match the application’s architecture.
If only one user account sees the error, compare the application’s permissions, mapped drives, environment variables, and actual installation path. Creating a new profile can be a diagnostic test, but it is not a proven repair for a missing application DLL.
When the error returns after reinstalling
If reinstalling appears to work but the error returns, check these possibilities:
- The program is being launched from a second, older installation folder.
- Antivirus software removes the file again after the first launch.
- The installer is incomplete or damaged.
- The application uses a launcher that restores an older file set.
- A required dependency besides
mfc42deu.dllis missing. - The application is loading a DLL from an unexpected current directory.
- The program’s old installer or copy-protection component is incompatible with modern Windows.
- The application was installed under one user account but is being run without access to its files.
- A network or removable-media path is unavailable.
Right-click the shortcut and inspect the Target field again. Then compare it with the path returned by the PowerShell search. If the program launches from a different directory than the one you repaired, you found an important part of the problem.
FAQ
Is mfc42deu.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a German-language MFC localization resource associated with the Visual C++ 6.0/MFC 4.2 generation and listed by Microsoft in its VB6 localization-support information. A file on your computer should still be checked for trusted provenance because a familiar filename can be copied or modified.
Is mfc42deu.dll part of Windows?
No. Microsoft states that the localization-support binaries are not shipped in Windows. They are distributed with applications that need them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs mfc42deu.dll the main Microsoft Foundation Class runtime?
No. It is a resource-only localization DLL. The code-bearing MFC runtime files are typically mfc42.dll or mfc42u.dll.
Is there a 64-bit version?
The file is x86/32-bit. A legacy 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows runs through WOW64 and needs matching 32-bit dependencies.
Will the current Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?
Usually not. Current Microsoft redistributable packages target later Visual Studio toolsets and are not documented as the source of this VC6-era German localization file. Repair or reinstall the affected application first.
Will installing Visual Basic 6 SP6 install it?
Do not assume so. Microsoft’s VB6 security package is a security rollup, not a documented standalone installer for mfc42deu.dll. The VB6 runtime-extended package also does not list this file in its documented contents.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I put the file in System32?
No, not as a generic first step. The application installer should place the file in the location expected by the program. Manual system-folder copying can cause architecture and compatibility problems.
Should I copy it into SysWOW64 on a 64-bit PC?
Not blindly. SysWOW64 participates in Windows file-system redirection, but it is not a general-purpose folder for application DLL repairs. Use the application’s installer and keep the file application-local unless the vendor specifies otherwise.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. It is a resource-only MFC DLL, not a COM server. regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command.
Can SFC restore mfc42deu.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while Microsoft says this localization DLL is not shipped in Windows. Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is also suspected.
What does “The specified module could not be found” mean when the file exists?
It can mean that another dependency required by the file or application is missing. Repair the complete application rather than copying only the named DLL.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore it only when its source and authenticity are verified. Reinstalling the application from trusted media is usually safer than repeatedly restoring a quarantined copy.
Can an old application still fail after the DLL is restored?
Yes. Very old software may depend on obsolete installers, copy-protection drivers, ActiveX controls, database components, or other legacy behavior that modern 64-bit Windows no longer supports. Restoring one resource DLL does not guarantee that the entire application is compatible.
What support staff should request
If you are helping someone else, ask for:
- The exact application name and version, if known.
- The complete error text.
- The executable path.
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the application is installed under
Program FilesorProgram Files (x86). - Whether the problem began after an update, reinstall, antivirus event, or cleanup.
- Whether the file exists anywhere on the computer.
- The result of
Get-AuthenticodeSignature. - The SHA256 hash of any existing copy.
- Whether other programs fail with similar messages.
- Whether the application works for another Windows user.
- Whether the original installer or vendor media is available.
The central diagnosis is straightforward: mfc42deu.dll is a legacy German MFC resource supplied by an application, not a normal Windows DLL. Repair or reinstall the exact program that needs it, verify quarantine and architecture issues, and use Windows-wide repair tools only when the evidence points to broader system corruption.
