Errors this guide addresses
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou may see one of these messages when starting an older application:
- “The program can’t start because mfcn42d.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “mfcn42d.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading mfcn42d.dll.”
- “Failed to load mfcn42d.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in mfcn42d.dll.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly.”
- “The application has failed to start because mfcn42d.dll was not found.”
The exact wording varies by Windows version and by the program that is trying to load mfcn42d.dll.
The 60-second answer
mfcn42d.dll is an old Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 MFC networking and sockets extension DLL. The final d identifies a debug build, not the normal runtime file intended for ordinary end users.
It usually belongs to the application that is failing, not to Windows 10 or Windows 11. The safest repair is therefore to identify the requesting application and repair or reinstall that program from its original installer or the software vendor’s package.

Do not download an arbitrary copy from a DLL website, place it in System32, or run regsvr32 as a first step. A random file may have the wrong build, architecture, dependencies, or malicious modifications.
Microsoft documents the MFCNxxD.dll family as debug MFC extension DLLs automatically linked when an MFC application uses socket support. The MFCN portion refers to MFC networking and sockets support, while the final D means debug. See Microsoft’s documentation for MFC database, OLE, and sockets extension DLLs.
What mfcn42d.dll is and is not
The file is identified as MFCNET Shared Library – Debug Version and is associated with Microsoft Visual C++ and Visual Studio 6.0-era software.
It is:
- A DLL dependency loaded by an application
- Part of the MFC networking or sockets extension family
- Historically associated with 32-bit Visual C++ 6.0 programs
- A debug-build library rather than a normal retail runtime component
It is not:
- A Windows service
- A standalone application
- A device driver
- A registry component that must be registered
- A normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 inbox file
- A file normally installed by the current Visual C++ Redistributable
Some historical file listings identify a particular version and approximate size, but those details do not establish that every copy of mfcn42d.dll has the same version. Treat the application’s original package as the authority for the required build.
What does the final d mean
Microsoft uses a naming convention in which the debug MFC libraries have a trailing D. For example, an application may request several debug files with names resembling:
mfc42d.dllmfcd42d.dllmfco42d.dllmfcn42d.dllmsvcrtd.dll
These files must match the application’s build. Replacing one debug library with a retail library, or mixing files from different Visual Studio generations, can change a missing-file error into an entry-point, ordinal, or application-startup error.
Microsoft states that debug MFC DLLs are not redistributable. Its supported deployment guidance concerns matching retail MFC libraries, not copying debug DLLs to arbitrary computers. See Microsoft’s MFC redistribution guidance.
Which application installed it
The error message often does not identify the owner clearly. Windows is reporting that an executable cannot resolve one of its imported DLLs. The executable requesting mfcn42d.dll is the program you need to repair.
Start with these checks:
- Note the application name shown in the error window or taskbar.
- Check which shortcut you used to launch the program.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- If the program has several launchers, check the main executable rather than an updater or helper.
- Look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Sort by install date if the problem began after a recent reinstall, disk move, cleanup, or security event.
Likely triggers include:
- Reinstalling an old program without all of its support files
- Restoring only part of an application directory from backup
- Moving the program to another disk
- A failed update or interrupted installation
- An antivirus quarantine or deletion
- A cleanup utility removing files it did not recognize
- Moving an old 32-bit application between Windows installations
- A vendor distributing a debug-built release by mistake
The filename alone does not identify one universal game or application. Several unrelated legacy programs may have been built with Visual C++ and MFC.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application
This is the most likely and safest solution.
Use the application’s repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
Some applications provide their own repair function instead:

- Open the application’s installation folder or Start menu group.
- Look for Repair, Maintenance, Modify, Verify files, or Update.
- Run the option as an administrator if requested.
- Restart Windows after the repair.
- Launch the application from its normal shortcut.
A successful repair should restore the application’s complete dependency set and allow the program to start without the mfcn42d.dll message.
Reinstall from the original source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up the application’s saved data, profiles, templates, and license information.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall using the original installer, product media, or the software publisher’s official package.
- Do not copy individual DLLs from another computer unless the application vendor specifically instructs you to do so.
- Test the application before restoring optional plugins or modifications.
If the installer itself requests mfcn42d.dll, is incomplete, or installs a debug build, contact the application vendor. The vendor needs to provide a supported release or the exact matching deployment files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Verify files through the program launcher
Some older programs and game launchers have a file verification option:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected program.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If verification reports that files were restored but the error remains, the missing DLL may have another dependency that is absent or incompatible. Contact the vendor rather than adding unrelated DLLs manually.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have quarantined or deleted the file because of a detection, a false positive, or a change in file reputation.
Do not immediately disable antivirus protection or create a permanent exclusion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the application stopped working.
- Expand a detection related to the affected program.
- Confirm the file path and the detection details.
- Restore the file only if it came from the original trusted installer and the entire application is known to be safe.
- If you are uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead. The menus will differ.
After restoring a file, run a full scan and test the application. If the file is detected again, do not keep restoring it. Remove the application and obtain a clean installer from the software publisher.
Fix 3: Check whether the program is 32-bit
The historical mfcn42d.dll is associated with 32-bit Visual C++ 6.0 software. A 32-bit application requires 32-bit dependencies. A 64-bit DLL cannot satisfy a 32-bit import, and copying files between System32 and SysWOW64 is not a reliable solution.
To identify the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Start the affected program until the error appears, if possible.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform if Windows provides that column.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
You can also inspect the application’s official requirements or ask its vendor.

If the application is 32-bit, reinstall its 32-bit package. Do not assume that installing a 64-bit Visual C++ package will supply a compatible file.
The current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables cover newer Visual Studio generations and provide separate x86 and x64 packages. They are not replacements for a Visual C++ 6.0 debug MFC library. See Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Fix 4: Do not install a random current Visual C++ Redistributable
Installing the current Visual C++ Redistributable is reasonable when a modern application explicitly requires it, but it normally will not install mfcn42d.dll.
Files such as mfc140.dll, mfc140d.dll, and mfc100.dll belong to different Visual C++ generations. They cannot be substituted for mfcn42d.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Likewise, a current retail runtime cannot replace an old debug library. If the application genuinely depends on debug files, the developer or vendor must provide a supported build or matching package. Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable installation guidance recommends obtaining installers from Microsoft and verifying that they are Microsoft-signed.
Fix 5: Check the complete application directory
If several files ending in 42D.dll are missing, this points to an incomplete legacy deployment rather than one damaged Windows component.
Look in the application’s own installation folder for the expected dependency group. Do not use the presence of one file as proof that every other file is correct. A program may fail because:
- Another MFC debug library is missing
msvcrtd.dllis missing- The DLL is the wrong build
- The DLL has an unresolved dependency
- The application executable was built against a different library set
A reputable dependency-analysis tool can show which import fails, but use it for diagnosis only. Obtain replacement files from the application vendor or original development environment.
If the error changes to “entry point not found,” the file is probably present but incompatible. If it changes to “not designed to run on Windows” or status 0xc000012f, suspect a corrupt, incompatible, or tampered binary. Remove manually copied files and reinstall the application.
Fix 6: Run Windows component checks only when other Windows files are failing
Because mfcn42d.dll is generally an application or developer dependency, SFC and DISM are unlikely to recreate it. They are appropriate when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, such as broken built-in tools, failed updates, damaged system components, or multiple unrelated Windows errors.

- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Leave the window open even if progress appears to pause.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, focus on repairing the application rather than repeating the command.
Running these commands repeatedly will not normally restore an application-local Visual C++ 6.0 debug DLL.
When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not reveal what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Fix 7: Check Windows Update and compatibility settings
Windows Update does not normally provide mfcn42d.dll, but keeping Windows current can address unrelated compatibility and component problems.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Compatibility mode may help an old program run correctly, but it does not supply missing libraries.
To try it:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if the vendor recommends it or the program previously worked that way.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program.
If the missing-DLL message remains, compatibility mode has not addressed the dependency problem.

Fix 8: Check drivers only if the application also reports hardware failures
A graphics or device driver does not normally provide mfcn42d.dll. Driver work is relevant only if the application also crashes with display, audio, printer, storage, or other hardware errors.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or Network adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a rollback:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
If you are manually hunting across hardware vendors for stale versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; installation is performed by the full version, and updating a driver is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns mfcn42d.dll.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs designed to register themselves, normally by exposing a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
An MFC runtime or extension dependency is normally loaded by the application when Windows resolves its imports. Registering it does not install its missing companion libraries, correct its architecture, or make an incompatible build work.

unless the application vendor explicitly confirms that this particular DLL is a self-registering component. If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that is evidence that registration is not supported, not that another registration command is needed. See Microsoft’s guidance for registering OCX and DLL files.

- Whether it matches the application’s import table
- Whether it has been modified or bundled with malware
Copying an arbitrary DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create system-wide conflicts and may replace a correct file with an incompatible one.
If a verified vendor package supplies a DLL for application-local deployment, keep it in the application’s own directory as instructed by the vendor. Do not place it in a Windows system directory.
When System Restore or Windows repair is justified
System Restore is reasonable when:
- The application worked recently
- A restore point predates the failure
- The problem began after a software installation, cleanup, or system change
- You have already protected important files
Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the failure. System Restore does not replace a proper application reinstall and may not restore every application file.
Consider Windows repair or an in-place repair only when multiple Windows components are failing and DISM, SFC, Windows Update, and normal application repair have not resolved the broader problem. A Windows repair is not the first response to one missing application DLL.
Frequently asked questions
Is mfcn42d.dll a Windows system file
Usually no. It is an old Visual C++ MFC networking extension dependency associated with an application. A copy found in a Windows directory does not prove that it is an inbox Windows component.
Will the current Visual C++ Redistributable fix it
Usually no. Current redistributables target newer Visual Studio generations. They do not normally install the Visual C++ 6.0 debug library named mfcn42d.dll.
Can I download just this DLL
Do not use random DLL download sites sites. Restore it through the original application installer, a vendor-supplied package, or a verified backup. If the vendor distributed a debug build, request a supported release or exact dependency set.
Should I copy it into System32
No. Use the application’s supported installation directory and matching package. Copying between System32 and SysWOW64 does not solve a 32-bit versus 64-bit mismatch.
Does the final d mean the file is dangerous
No. It identifies a debug build. However, debug MFC DLLs are not intended as general-purpose redistributable runtime files, and any replacement must come from a trusted source.
What if reinstalling does not work
Check antivirus quarantine, verify that the application is 32-bit where expected, inspect the complete dependency set, and look for an entry-point or status-code change. Then contact the software vendor with the exact error, application version, Windows version, and installation source.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can compatibility mode supply the DLL
No. Compatibility mode may change how an older application runs, but it does not install missing dependencies.
Should I run SFC and DISM again
Run DISM followed by SFC once when there is evidence of broader Windows corruption. If Windows itself is healthy and only one old application reports mfcn42d.dll, repair or reinstall that application instead.
What does an “entry point not found” error mean
It usually means the file exists but is the wrong build or does not match the other MFC libraries. Replace the complete dependency set through the application vendor rather than downloading another individual DLL.
