Start with this quick diagnosis
Before changing files, note:
- Which game or application shows the error.
- Whether it happens at launch, during video playback, recording, conversion, or exporting.
- Whether other media applications fail too.
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the issue began after a Windows update, cleanup tool, antivirus scan, or storage problem.
- Which Windows edition you have: standard Windows or Windows 10/11 N.
mftranscode.dll is a genuine Windows component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game-specific runtime. It is the Media Foundation Transcode DLL, part of Microsoft’s Media Foundation multimedia platform. Media Foundation builds audio and video pipelines for decoding, encoding, and writing media files through its Transcode API.
That distinction matters. Reinstalling a game can repair a private game file, but it normally does not replace a damaged Windows Media Foundation component. Start with the fastest checks below, then move into Windows repair if more than one program is affected.

What the mftranscode.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because mftranscode.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mftranscode.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting mftranscode.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading mftranscode.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “mftranscode.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “mftranscode.dll file could not be loaded.”
These are Windows loader messages. They identify the DLL the application requested, but they do not prove that this file alone is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by mftranscode.dll is absent, incompatible, or the wrong architecture.

Check the normal file locations and architecture
On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
%windir%System32mftranscode.dll
%windir%SysWOW64mftranscode.dll
Despite its name, System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. This arrangement allows 64-bit Windows to run both types of applications.
A 32-bit game can therefore need the SysWOW64 copy even when Windows itself is 64-bit. A 64-bit application normally uses the System32 copy.
To check the files:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%windir%System32and select OK. - Look for
mftranscode.dll. - Repeat with
%windir%SysWOW64if you are using 64-bit Windows. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Details or Digital Signatures.
Do not choose a replacement based on file size, a version list, or whether the filename looks familiar. Windows builds can contain different system-file versions, and the correct architecture matters more than a supposedly newer number.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the file exists but only one application fails, skip to the application repair section. If it is absent from the expected location and several programs fail, repair Windows rather than copying a DLL from elsewhere.
Fix Windows 10 or 11 N with Media Feature Pack
Windows N editions omit Media Foundation and related media technologies. If you have Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, installing a random DLL cannot recreate the missing platform. Install Microsoft’s matching Media Feature Pack instead.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select View features beside Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it, choose Next, then select Install.
- Restart Windows after installation.
To check your edition:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Read Windows specifications and check the Edition entry.
Use the package intended for your exact Windows release. Earlier N and KN editions also require their corresponding Media Feature Pack rather than a package intended for another release. Some hardware media functions may require driver reinstallation after the feature pack is installed.
After restarting, launch the affected program again. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC because the feature pack does not repair every form of component corruption.

Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows Update is the normal delivery method for system binaries. First install pending updates, restart, and then run Microsoft’s component repair sequence.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
DISM repairs the Windows component store or supplies the repair source that SFC needs. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies where possible. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable source, which is why DISM comes first.
A message that Windows “found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” indicates that SFC changed protected files. Restart before testing. If SFC says it found files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, confirm Windows Update is working, and retry SFC. Persistent failures may require matching Windows installation media as a DISM source or an in-place Windows repair.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether DISM or Windows Update repaired the component can turn troubleshooting into guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies and automate the repair with its full version, but paid software is not required and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC path remains the appropriate first repair for a Windows system DLL.

Repair only the affected game or application
If videos play normally in other programs and only one game or application reports mftranscode.dll, its installation may be damaged or it may be loading a private dependency incorrectly.
Use the program’s official repair path:
- Open the launcher or application manager.
- Open your library or installed-program list.
- Select the affected title.
- Open its Manage, Properties, or Settings menu.
- Choose Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the program.
If the launcher has no repair function, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. Keep saved games and configuration files if the application stores them separately.
This is especially important when the error appears only after a game update. The named Windows DLL may be present and healthy while the application has a broken manifest, incompatible private library, or incomplete update.
Check antivirus quarantine before replacing anything
Security software can quarantine a file after a scan, although the error alone does not establish that this happened.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections and quarantined items.
- If
mftranscode.dllappears, verify that the detected path is the expected Windows directory. - Do not restore it if the path is inside a suspicious temporary folder or an unknown application directory.
- If your security product identifies an authentic Microsoft-signed system file, update its definitions and follow its restore process.
- Run another scan after restoration.
If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC to restore the system copy. Also run a complete Microsoft Defender scan. If multiple files keep disappearing, investigate malware and disk health rather than repeatedly restoring individual DLLs.
Update media and graphics drivers when the failure is broader
A driver does not normally replace mftranscode.dll, but outdated or damaged media, graphics, camera, or chipset drivers can cause applications that use Media Foundation to fail.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any relevant Cameras or Imaging devices section.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows after any installation.
- If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
- For a clean vendor-supported reinstall, download the driver from your computer, motherboard, GPU, or device manufacturer.
Driver updates are most relevant when video playback, capture, encoding, or several games fail at once. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers instead of making you hunt through many hardware pages; its free scan shows the findings, while installation through the full version is optional and not guaranteed to resolve every Media Foundation problem.
Do not download or register mftranscode.dll manually
Avoid DLL download archives and unofficial file mirrors. A copied file can contain malware, use the wrong Windows build, have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, or hide the real problem in a missing dependency. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder can also create version conflicts and DLL hijacking opportunities.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the matching Media Feature Pack, or Windows installation media instead. These paths restore components that match the operating system.
Do not run:
regsvr32 mftranscode.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. mftranscode.dll is a Media Foundation implementation DLL, not a COM or ActiveX plug-in that users normally register manually. The command may return “DllRegisterServer was not found” and will not repair a missing or corrupt Windows component.
Use deeper recovery only when normal repair fails
Consider advanced recovery when DISM and SFC cannot complete, Windows repeatedly reports corruption, or files disappear again after repair.
- Use System Restore when the failure clearly began after a recent change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Run an offline malware scan if corruption continues or several system files are affected.
- Check disk health and back up important data if files repeatedly become damaged.
- Use matching Windows installation media as a DISM repair source when the local component store is unavailable.
- Perform an in-place Windows repair installation when the installation remains damaged but you need to preserve apps and files.
System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal or the correct Media Feature Pack on an N edition. If repair installation also fails, professional recovery may be safer than deleting system directories or replacing DLLs individually.

FAQ
Is mftranscode.dll part of Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. It belongs to Microsoft Windows Media Foundation. Reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET only when the application reports a separate error for one of those components.
Why does a 32-bit game need SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit programs use the 32-bit system libraries in SysWOW64, while 64-bit programs use the 64-bit files in System32. Both paths can therefore matter.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a missing dependency, an architecture mismatch, or a damaged application installation. Repair Windows if the problem is system-wide, or verify the affected program if it is the only failure.
Should I copy the DLL into the game folder?
No. Restore the Windows component through official servicing. Copying a system DLL into an application directory can load an incompatible or unsafe version.
When should I verify game files?
Use the launcher’s Verify integrity, Verify files, or Repair function when only one game fails and other media applications work. Reinstall that game from its official source if verification cannot repair it.
What details matter when asking for further help?
Record the exact error text, Windows edition and build, whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, whether mftranscode.dll exists in the expected directory, and whether the problem began after an update, quarantine event, cleanup operation, or hardware change.
