Micron Warns Memory Supply Could Be Tighter in 2027 and 2028

Micron expects memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026. That is the company’s forecast, not a guarantee that every kind of RAM or storage will be scarce or become more expensive for consumers.

What Micron’s CEO is forecasting

During Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call, Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said: “We expect memory and storage supply-demand conditions to be much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026.” He also said the company expects demand to exceed supply in both years and has “no line of sight” to when supply and demand will balance. Those remarks describe Micron’s outlook, not a settled future outcome; “no line of sight” does not mean supply can never catch up. (earnings-call transcript and reporting)

The “next couple of years” in this warning means calendar 2027 and 2028. Micron also discusses them as fiscal 2027 and 2028 in its outlook.

What “memory” covers in the forecast

Micron’s outlook spans DRAM and NAND, but its shipment-growth estimates refer to bits shipped across the industry—not how many retail products shoppers will see on shelves, or how much they will cost.

Market Micron’s industry bit-shipment forecast for calendar 2027 and 2028 Supply outlook
DRAM Approximately low-20s percentage growth, according to Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 outlook Micron expects supply constraints in both years
NAND Approximately mid-20s percentage growth, according to Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 outlook Micron expects supply constraints in both years

DRAM is the category behind familiar PC system memory such as RAM; NAND is used in flash storage, including SSDs. Shipment growth measures memory bits, so it is not a direct forecast of consumer RAM availability or retail price changes. (Micron’s fiscal Q4 2026 outlook)

Why Micron expects supply to lag demand

Mehrotra pointed to strong demand, particularly from AI workloads that need high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM. PC Gamer reports that he connected demand to larger models, AI agents and their growing context needs. (PC Gamer’s report and transcript)

Micron also described limits on how quickly the industry can add capacity. New clean rooms take time to build, and production ramps gradually after the first wafer output. HBM transitions and lower productivity gains per wafer from future manufacturing-node transitions are additional headwinds to supply growth. (earnings-call remarks; company outlook)

What Micron’s commitments say—and do not say

Mehrotra said more than 75% of Micron’s output for 2027 was already committed, and that many customer conversations were already about 2028. This is a statement about Micron’s own production and customer commitments. It is not a measure of all industry supply, remaining inventory across the market, or memory available to PC buyers. What PC gamers should expect

The warning is relevant to gamers because memory and storage are components in PCs, but the most direct pressure described in the reporting is in business-to-business markets such as HBM and server DRAM. Ars Technica reports that the crunch has contributed to higher prebuilt-PC costs and some OEMs offering lower RAM configurations. Those examples indicate possible consumer spillovers; they do not establish that every PC, RAM kit or SSD will be harder to find or more expensive. (Ars Technica’s report)

The available reporting does not quantify a future retail RAM price effect. Micron’s bit-shipment outlook cannot be converted into a specific prediction for the price or availability of a desktop DDR5 kit. Compatibility for any upgrade still depends on the PC or motherboard.
