Microsoft and AMD’s partnership is official—but the important 2026 development is what it has become. Xbox announced the strategic, multi-year relationship on June 19, 2025. Microsoft has since identified Project Helix as its next-generation first-party Xbox console, built around a custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC). Developer alpha hardware is planned from 2027, but Microsoft has not announced a retail launch date, price, final specifications, or complete compatibility list.
In other words, this is not simply Microsoft ordering another off-the-shelf chip for a faster Xbox. It is a long-term attempt to build a more unified Xbox platform across consoles, Windows PCs, handhelds, cloud gaming, and other devices.

Why Microsoft is working with AMD
AMD already supplies the semi-custom SoCs used in the Xbox Series X|S. AMD also supplies the SoC platform for the PlayStation 5 family and has extensive experience combining x86 CPU technology with Radeon graphics in custom and semi-custom designs.
AMD’s 2025 annual report identifies semi-custom SoCs as a business that produces customer-specific solutions built from CPU, GPU, and multimedia technologies, and confirms AMD’s role in Xbox Series X|S hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Microsoft, the major advantage is continuity. Developers can work within a broadly familiar CPU/GPU environment while Xbox and AMD create a processor designed around Microsoft’s compatibility goals and software stack. A custom SoC can also reduce duplicated components and help balance performance, power consumption, thermals, physical size, and manufacturing cost.
Those are potential engineering benefits, not guarantees about the eventual retail machine. Microsoft has not published Helix’s CPU cores, GPU architecture, process node, memory bandwidth, clock speeds, storage configuration, or graphics performance.

Project Helix is the part that matters now
On March 11, 2026, Microsoft formally named its next-generation first-party console project Project Helix. The confirmed direction includes:
- A custom AMD SoC.
- Support for Xbox console and PC games.
- Co-development alongside the next generation of DirectX and FSR.
- A major intended improvement in ray-tracing capability.
- Machine learning integrated into the graphics and compute pipeline.
- Developer alpha hardware beginning in 2027.
Microsoft described the ray-tracing goal as an “order-of-magnitude leap.” That is Microsoft’s characterization, not an independently tested benchmark and not a promise that every game will run at ten times the frame rate. The eventual result will depend on the chip, memory, cooling, game engine, developer support, and product positioning.
Ray tracing could improve lighting, reflections, shadows, and other effects. Machine learning could assist with image reconstruction, denoising, animation, simulation, asset processing, or other workloads. FSR-style upscaling may allow games to render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct a sharper output. These are capabilities and goals; no launch-game performance figures have been announced.
What happens to the existing Xbox library?
Backward compatibility is one of the clearest consumer promises so far. Microsoft says games from four generations of Xbox will remain playable for years to come.
That is a strong continuity commitment, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every title, expansion, peripheral, disc, or online feature will work identically. Compatibility can involve several separate questions:

- Whether a game is already part of an Xbox backward-compatibility program.
- Whether it needs a patch or publisher approval.
- Whether digital licenses transfer as expected.
- Whether a physical disc still requires a working disc drive or an online license check.
- Whether downloadable content, delisted games, or licensed music remain available.
- Whether multiplayer servers still operate.
- Whether the game depends on discontinued accessories or region-specific content.
The safe conclusion is that Microsoft is designing Helix around broad four-generation playability, but a complete title-by-title exception list has not been published.
Is Microsoft abandoning the console?
The official evidence points the other way. Microsoft calls Helix a next-generation first-party Xbox console and says it is being designed and built by Xbox. The AMD partnership explicitly includes next-generation Xbox consoles.
What is changing is the definition of Xbox. Microsoft wants Xbox games and services to travel across console, Windows, handhelds, cloud gaming, and potentially multiple storefronts. A future Xbox can therefore remain a dedicated living-room console while becoming more closely connected to the PC ecosystem.
“Microsoft is still making a console” and “Xbox is becoming more PC-like” can both be true.
Where the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally fits
The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handhelds made in collaboration with ASUS. They offer an Xbox-oriented full-screen experience while retaining access to Windows applications, PC games, mods, and multiple storefronts.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FPS; HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
They are not Microsoft-built first-party Xbox handhelds. The distinction is important:
- ROG Xbox Ally: an ASUS-manufactured Windows gaming handheld with Xbox integration.
- Project Helix: Microsoft’s confirmed next-generation first-party console.
- Future first-party handheld: not fully specified in the official announcements.
Microsoft’s language about Xbox being “in your hands” signals handheld ambitions, but it does not confirm a particular Microsoft-branded handheld, design, chip, or release date. AMD’s annual report identifies Ryzen Z2 support for portable gaming devices including the ROG Xbox Ally, but that does not prove a future first-party handheld will use the same processor.

Microsoft is trying to make the Xbox experience more consistent across Windows and console hardware. Its announced Windows developments include an Xbox mode for Windows 11, a controller-optimized full-screen interface, and easier movement between productivity and gaming. Xbox said the mode would begin rolling out in April 2026 in select markets, so availability depends on region and software rollout.
Microsoft has also emphasized continued Windows openness, including access to other applications and storefronts. Xbox Play Anywhere can allow eligible purchases to work across Xbox and Windows, but it does not mean every Xbox game automatically becomes a Windows PC game.
The broader strategy is to make Xbox both hardware and software: a service and interface that can run across several kinds of AMD-powered devices rather than a product tied to one closed box.

What “not locked to a single store” does—and does not—mean
Microsoft has said it wants Xbox to be less locked to a single store or device, and its 2026 material refers to access through purchases, subscriptions, and other leading storefronts. That confirms a direction toward greater flexibility.
It does not confirm that the retail Helix console will run Steam, the Epic Games Store, every Windows game, or unrestricted desktop applications. Microsoft has not published a complete storefront policy for Helix. Until it does, the distinction is:
- Confirmed: Xbox is pursuing broader cross-device and storefront flexibility.
- Unconfirmed: Steam support, Epic Games Store support, unrestricted Windows access, or a fully open PC-style operating system on the living-room console.
Potential benefits and trade-offs
Potential benefits
- More graphics performance per watt from a custom CPU/GPU design.
- Stronger ray tracing and machine-learning-assisted rendering.
- A more unified development target across console, Windows, and handheld devices.
- Easier ports between Xbox and PC in some cases.
- Better continuity for existing Xbox games.
- A more consistent Xbox interface across different screens and form factors.
Trade-offs
- A broader Xbox platform may feel less like a traditional closed console.
- Windows devices and multiple storefronts can create more varied performance and support requirements.
- PC-like flexibility can bring additional setup and troubleshooting.
- Upscaling, frame generation, and other AI techniques can involve image-quality, latency, or game-support trade-offs.
- Backward compatibility can vary by title, publisher participation, license, server, or accessory.
- A portfolio strategy could produce multiple Xbox devices at different performance levels rather than one obvious successor.
What remains unknown
Microsoft has not announced:
- Helix’s retail launch date.
- Consumer price.
- Final CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and cooling specifications.
- Whether it will include an optical drive.
- Its exact operating system and storefront behavior.
- A title-by-title compatibility list.
- Full compatibility for current controllers and other accessories.
- A retail Microsoft-made handheld.
- Detailed cloud-hardware implementation.
“Cloud” in the 2025 partnership announcement does not establish whether the same AMD silicon will be used in Xbox home hardware, cloud servers, or both.

There is no official reason to assume Xbox Series X|S consoles will suddenly become obsolete. Current hardware remains the way to access the existing Xbox ecosystem today, and Microsoft’s compatibility commitment is intended to preserve the value of the existing library during the transition.
Buy a current Xbox if you want to play now. Consider a Windows handheld such as the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally if portable PC gaming and multiple storefronts matter more than a traditional console experience. Wait for Helix if your priority is its promised next-generation AMD silicon, improved ray tracing, and long-term platform continuity—and you are comfortable waiting for unannounced price and availability details.
Do not buy or delay based on a rumored Helix specification, an assumed 2027 retail launch, or an unconfirmed Steam policy.
The business significance
The partnership gives Microsoft a way to extend Xbox beyond a single console generation and potentially reuse a common hardware-and-software foundation across consoles, handhelds, PCs, and cloud gaming. AMD gains another long-term semi-custom opportunity and a broader role in gaming devices.
The precise commercial terms are private. The strategic message, however, is clear: Microsoft is building an Xbox ecosystem that can span more form factors while retaining a dedicated first-party console.
