Microsoft cuts about 1,900 gaming jobs, roughly 9% of Microsoft Gaming, after Activision Blizzard acquisition

Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 layoffs across Microsoft Gaming on January 25, 2024, roughly three months after completing its Activision Blizzard acquisition. The cuts affected Activision Blizzard, Xbox and ZeniMax/Bethesda teams, while Blizzard also canceled its survival game and saw two senior departures.

Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 job cuts across Microsoft Gaming on January 25, 2024—about 8.6%, or roughly 9%, of a reported 22,000-person gaming workforce. The reductions affected teams associated with Activision Blizzard, Xbox, and ZeniMax/Bethesda, and came 104 days after Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Reports indicated that Activision Blizzard accounted for the largest share of the cuts, but Microsoft did not publish a complete breakdown by company, studio, country, or role. The timing points to a major post-acquisition restructuring, although it does not prove that the deal alone caused every job loss.

What Microsoft announced

Microsoft Gaming’s approximately 1,900 eliminated positions represented about 8.6% of the unit’s reported 22,000 employees:

1,900 ÷ 22,000 = 8.64%

That is why the reduction was widely described as “about 9%.” The percentage is a rounded calculation based on reported figures, not a separately published, audited statistic from Microsoft. It also applies to Microsoft Gaming, not Microsoft Corporation as a whole.

Microsoft announced the cuts in an internal message from gaming chief Phil Spencer. The affected organization included Microsoft’s existing Xbox operations, Activision Blizzard teams, and ZeniMax/Bethesda-related teams. Contemporary reporting said most of the reductions would occur at Activision Blizzard, but no full division-by-division total was released.

How soon after the acquisition did the layoffs happen?

Date Event
January 18, 2022 Microsoft announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard.
October 13, 2023 Microsoft completed the acquisition and welcomed Activision Blizzard and King into Team Xbox.
January 25, 2024 Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 gaming job cuts.

The layoffs were announced 104 days after the deal closed. Microsoft’s official completion announcement described the transaction as bringing Activision, Blizzard, and King into Microsoft Gaming. The acquisition expanded Microsoft’s portfolio with franchises including Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and Candy Crush.

The deal was commonly described at the time as a roughly $69 billion acquisition, based on its announced headline value. Microsoft later reported an approximately $75.4 billion total purchase price in its financial reporting. The two figures describe different reporting contexts and should not be treated as a contradiction without that qualification. See Microsoft’s original announcement and its financial filing.

Which employees were affected?

The confirmed scope was broader than Activision Blizzard alone. The cuts affected Microsoft Gaming, including:

  • Activision Blizzard employees, reportedly the largest group;
  • Xbox employees; and
  • ZeniMax/Bethesda-related teams.

Microsoft did not publicly provide an exact count for each business, studio, country, or job category. As a result, it would be inaccurate to describe the announcement as Microsoft laying off 1,900 Activision Blizzard employees exclusively. It is also not evidence that every Xbox, Bethesda, or Activision Blizzard studio reduced staff by the same proportion.

Why did Microsoft say it was making the cuts?

Microsoft characterized the move as an organizational and cost restructuring. According to reporting on Spencer’s message, the company said it was working to:

  • align the organization around a strategy and execution plan;
  • identify overlapping functions across Blizzard and Microsoft Gaming;
  • create a more sustainable cost structure; and
  • focus resources on products and strategies with stronger future growth potential.

Those are Microsoft’s management explanations. Outside interpretations included post-acquisition duplication, pressure to control costs, the broader contraction following the pandemic-era gaming boom, and a shift toward concentrating investment on fewer major franchises. The public record supports treating these as possible industry and business explanations—not as proof of one single cause.

A successful acquisition and layoffs can occur at the same time. An acquired company can bring valuable revenue and intellectual property while still containing overlapping corporate, operational, or development functions that the buyer chooses to consolidate.

Blizzard’s survival game was canceled

The restructuring period also brought the cancellation of Blizzard’s previously announced survival game. Blizzard had publicly revealed the project in January 2022, but it had not announced a final title or release date.

Reports said some developers affected by the cancellation could be redirected to other projects. However, the available public information does not establish exactly how many of the 1,900 eliminated positions were connected to the game. The cancellation and layoffs were part of the same restructuring cycle, but that does not mean the entire development team was dismissed or that the layoffs alone caused the project’s cancellation.

Blizzard leadership changes

Mike Ybarra, Blizzard’s president, left the company during the same announcement cycle. Allen Adham, a Blizzard co-founder and chief design officer, also departed.

These executive departures should be distinguished from the workforce reductions. Microsoft’s internal messaging presented Ybarra’s departure as a decision to leave after helping oversee the transition, rather than identifying him as part of the 1,900 layoffs. Neither executive departure should automatically be classified as a layoff.

What support did Microsoft offer?

Spencer said Microsoft would support affected employees during the transition, including severance benefits informed by local employment laws. Exact terms depended on jurisdiction, employment status, contract terms, and other individual circumstances.

There was no single publicly stated severance package that can be applied to every affected worker. U.S. terms should not be generalized to employees in other countries.

Was the acquisition itself responsible?

The layoffs clearly followed the acquisition in time and were widely understood as involving post-merger integration. Combining Activision Blizzard, Xbox, and ZeniMax/Bethesda created a much larger gaming organization, making overlapping functions and changes in reporting structures plausible restructuring targets.

But “following the acquisition” is a chronological description, not proof that the acquisition caused all 1,900 job losses. Microsoft did not publicly say that the transaction alone was responsible. The cuts also occurred during a broader period of layoffs across the games industry, after companies expanded aggressively during the pandemic and later reassessed spending, staffing, and project portfolios.

This was not Microsoft’s only workforce reduction in the period. The company announced broader company-wide layoffs in January 2023, an event that should be kept separate from this specific Microsoft Gaming announcement.

What remains unknown

  • The exact number of cuts at Activision Blizzard, Xbox, and ZeniMax/Bethesda;
  • the precise studio-by-studio or country-by-country impact;
  • the number of affected workers from particular roles or projects;
  • the exact relationship between the canceled survival game and the job reductions;
  • the severance terms for individual employees; and
  • whether the restructuring produced specific savings or changed Microsoft Gaming’s long-term financial outlook.

Without a detailed company disclosure, studio-specific percentages and precise project-level conclusions cannot be reliably inferred from the 1,900-job headline.

Why the announcement mattered

The cuts combined several major developments: a large technology company reducing staff shortly after a multibillion-dollar acquisition, a mass layoff during an industry-wide employment downturn, the cancellation of a Blizzard project, and leadership changes at one of gaming’s best-known studios.

They also highlighted a central tension in consolidation. A larger company may gain resources, franchises, and distribution opportunities while reducing duplicated functions and narrowing the number of projects it funds. That can improve cost control, but it can also reduce creative capacity and increase employment instability for game developers.

The announcement therefore showed Microsoft consolidating a substantially larger gaming business and prioritizing selected products and costs. By itself, it did not demonstrate that the Activision Blizzard acquisition had failed.
