Microsoft’s “New Gaming Features Start Rolling Out in Microsoft Edge” announcement was published on June 23, 2022—not a new 2026 release. It introduced a gaming-focused New Tab page, Clarity Boost for Xbox Cloud Gaming streams, an Efficiency mode setting for PC gaming, and a menu of casual games. A separate, newer feature called Game Assist puts an Edge-powered browser widget over PC games through Xbox Game Bar.
What Microsoft added to Edge in June 2022
Microsoft described the four additions as part of its effort to make Edge a gaming browser. The announcement’s “best browser for gamers” phrasing was Microsoft’s marketing, not an independent performance finding. The features have different purposes and requirements; they are not a single gaming mode.
Gaming-focused New Tab page
The desktop New Tab experience could show gaming news, guides, streams, highlights, tournaments, and upcoming or new releases. Signing in with an Xbox account could add recommendations and recently played Xbox games, as well as access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The page was intended for desktop Edge users, but the exact layout and navigation labels from 2022 may no longer appear in current Edge builds.
Clarity Boost for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Clarity Boost applies client-side spatial upscaling to make an Xbox Cloud Gaming video stream look sharper in Edge. Microsoft specified Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It affects the streamed picture; it does not increase the game’s native rendering resolution on Microsoft’s servers, improve bandwidth, or apply to locally installed PC games. Results depend on the stream, display, connection, and game.

Efficiency mode for PC gaming
The original PC-gaming setting was designed to reduce Edge’s resource use when a PC game launches, then leave the gaming-related efficiency state when the game closes. Microsoft specified Windows 10 and Windows 11. This can leave more CPU or memory headroom for a game, particularly when many browser tabs are open, but it is not a guaranteed frame-rate boost and cannot fix a game, driver, GPU, or thermal bottleneck.
Games menu
The Games menu offered free casual titles including Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Jewel, Microsoft Mahjong, and Edge Surf. This is distinct from Xbox Cloud Gaming: casual browser games do not make the entire Xbox cloud catalog free. In its 2022 announcement, Microsoft said Game Pass Ultimate members could play Xbox Cloud Gaming titles through the browser and described Fortnite as playable without a subscription with a free Xbox account at that time; current catalog and access terms can differ.

How to find the original features
The following are the paths Microsoft published in 2022. Edge’s interface and feature availability can change, so treat them as historical instructions rather than a guarantee that every label remains in the same place.
Open the gaming New Tab page
- Open a new tab in Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Gaming header in the New Tab navigation bar, if it is present.
- Sign in with an Xbox account if you want Xbox recommendations and recently played games.
If the Gaming header is missing, check the current New Tab page’s layout or personalization controls, update Edge, and consider whether a managed device, market, or account configuration affects what is shown. The original label may have changed or the feature may no longer be offered in that form.

Turn on Clarity Boost during cloud play
- Start an Xbox Cloud Gaming session in Edge on a supported Windows environment.
- Open the player’s … menu in the upper-left corner.
- Select Clarity Boost, if the option is available.
Look in the cloud-gaming player itself, not Edge’s general settings. If the option is absent, confirm that the game is being streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming rather than running locally and that Edge is current; Microsoft’s original instructions do not establish that the control appears in every current cloud-gaming context.
Enable the PC-gaming Efficiency mode setting
- Open Edge’s Settings and more (…) menu.
- Select Settings, then System and performance.
- Under Efficiency mode, enable the PC-gaming option if your version provides it.
The setting targets Edge’s competing resource use. If performance does not change, test the same game scene with the same settings and background apps; the benefit may be small on a system with ample CPU and memory headroom.

Open the Games menu
- Open Edge’s Settings and more (…) menu.
- Select Games, if available, and choose a title.
In September 2022, Microsoft also said Games could be reached from the Edge sidebar in English markets. The published path to show the sidebar was Settings and more (…) > Show sidebar. These locations may differ in current versions.

Edge resource controls came later
In May 2024, Microsoft announced resource controls in Edge 125, initially in Beta. These provide a configurable RAM limit and let users choose whether resource control applies only while gaming or all the time. Microsoft documented the path as Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance > Manage your performance. This is a later, more configurable resource-management tool, not one of the four June 2022 additions. A tight memory limit can make background pages less responsive or cause tabs to reload.

Game Assist is the newer in-game browser widget
Microsoft announced Game Assist in preview in November 2024 and later noted Stable availability in January 2025. It is an Edge-powered widget opened through Xbox Game Bar, designed to let players look up guides, search the web, watch video, listen to music, or use services such as Discord, Twitch, and Spotify without leaving a game. It can be pinned over a game, moved, resized, and made partly transparent.
Microsoft’s current FAQ states that Game Assist is included with Edge 137 or later on Windows 11 Home, Education, and Pro, with Windows 11 version 22H2 or later and current updates. Microsoft also says it can be installed on any Windows 11 edition through Edge settings by searching for Game Assist. These requirements are specific to Game Assist, not the original 2022 features.
Open Game Assist
- Update Microsoft Edge, Windows 11, and Xbox Game Bar.
- Launch a PC game and press Windows key + G to open Game Bar.
- Select Game Assist.
Game Assist can be used when Edge is not the desktop default browser, but its Edge integration is most seamless for Edge favorites, history, cookies, passwords, and related profile data. Desktop Edge tabs do not automatically appear in the widget, and some extension features may not work there. It is built on Edge rather than being a replacement widget for other browser engines.
Microsoft says the overlay can be used with any PC game, while game-aware tips and guides are limited to its enhanced-game catalog. If recognition fails, press Ctrl+G to enter or paste the game title, or right-click and select Paste game title. The widget is optimized for keyboard and mouse; Microsoft describes controller support as an area it is still refining. Microsoft says Game Assist consumes no resources when Game Bar is not in use and shuts down after inactivity, but an active overlay still uses some system resources.

Which Edge gaming features are worth using?
- For Xbox Cloud Gaming: Clarity Boost is the relevant Edge feature if it appears in the player and the stream looks soft. It changes the displayed stream, not the game’s server-side rendering or your connection.
- For PC gaming with many browser tabs open: Efficiency mode or resource controls may reduce Edge’s competition for memory and CPU. More aggressive limits can affect background tabs, and results depend on the system.
- For guides or media while playing: Game Assist is useful if you want a browser overlay rather than repeatedly Alt-Tabbing, especially on a single-monitor setup. Its game-specific guidance is not universal.
- For casual play: The Games menu is a lightweight way to reach browser games, but its presence and location can vary in current Edge.
- For maximum competitive performance: Do not assume a browser toggle will improve frame rate. Edge resource controls address browser overhead, not game optimization, GPU limits, thermal throttling, drivers, or network latency.
