If a second Microsoft Edge window appears as another taskbar button, Windows is usually following its taskbar grouping setting—not ignoring your pinned Edge shortcut. To give every Edge window its own labeled button, right-click the taskbar, open Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviours, and set Combine taskbar buttons (or Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels) to Never. If you instead want one pinned browser icon, check that the extra icon is not an Edge-installed website or web app. Those apps run like separate Windows applications and can be pinned independently.
What the extra Edge icon actually means
Windows treats the taskbar icon and the running windows as two related but separate things. Pinning Edge places a shortcut on the taskbar; the Combine taskbar buttons policy decides how windows that are currently running are displayed. Therefore, opening another Edge window can produce another visible button even though you started from the pinned icon.

Microsoft Support defines three taskbar-button modes:
| Setting | How Windows displays Edge windows | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Always | Windows combines buttons for windows from the same application. | A compact taskbar when you normally keep one Edge button. |
| When taskbar is full | Windows keeps buttons separate until available taskbar space becomes limited, then combines them. | A compromise between labels and space. |
| Never | Each window remains an individual, labeled button and is never combined, regardless of how many windows are open. | Separate buttons for separate Edge windows. |
That policy applies to windows, not to every tab. Two tabs in one Edge window still belong to one window and cannot be turned into two taskbar buttons by changing this setting.

Choose the result you want
The right fix depends on whether you want more buttons or fewer. Use this distinction before changing anything:
| Your goal | What to change | What will not change |
|---|---|---|
| See a separate button for every Edge window | Set Combine taskbar buttons to Never. | Tabs inside one window remain together. |
| Keep a compact, single Edge button | Use Always, or When taskbar is full if you want temporary separation. | A separately installed site or web app can still have its own icon. |
| Remove an icon that belongs to a website | Right-click that icon and choose Unpin from taskbar. | This does not uninstall the site or alter Edge’s normal window grouping. |
| Make a different Edge shortcut the pinned item | Unpin the wrong shortcut, then pin the intended Edge or site shortcut again. | Existing windows may still be governed by the grouping policy. |
Show separate buttons for separate Edge windows
Microsoft Q&A guidance specifically applies the Windows setting to Edge windows. Follow these steps on the affected PC:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviours. On some Windows versions, this section appears under a slightly different layout.
- Find Combine taskbar buttons. The label may instead read Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels.
- Choose Never.
- Open two genuinely separate Edge windows and look at the taskbar. Each window should have its own labeled button. Selecting one button should activate only that window.
The Microsoft Support wording for Never is explicit: “This setting shows each window as an individual, labeled button and never combines them, no matter how many windows are open.” It is a display rule, not a change to Edge’s tab model.

How to verify that you opened a new window
A new tab is created inside the current window and will not receive a second taskbar button. Use Edge’s New window command to create a separate window, then repeat it if you need a third. If you only moved tabs around, the taskbar has no separate windows to display.

What to expect when the taskbar fills
With Never selected, Windows is instructed not to combine the buttons because of crowding. You may see more labels and less free space, and buttons can become narrower as other applications open. That is the intended trade-off for keeping every Edge window visible independently.
Keep one pinned Edge icon instead
If your aim is to launch and manage Edge from one compact taskbar button, Always is the clearest choice. When taskbar is full leaves windows separate while there is room and combines them only when space becomes scarce. Neither option merges tabs into separate buttons; they only control how separate windows are represented.
When buttons are combined, selecting the Edge button normally exposes the windows associated with that application so you can choose one. The pinned shortcut remains the launch point; grouping does not mean a second executable was automatically installed.
Check whether the “extra Edge” is actually a website app
Edge can install websites and web apps so they behave like Windows applications. Such an app can have its own taskbar icon, name, and running window. A site app may look like a second Edge installation even though it was created through Edge.

Identify the icon
- Right-click the suspicious taskbar icon and read its displayed name. A site or service name, rather than the browser name, is a strong indication that it is an installed web app.
- Compare the icon artwork with the normal Edge icon. Web apps commonly use the site’s branding.
- Activate the icon and inspect the window. A dedicated site window with the site’s name indicates an installed app rather than an ordinary browser window.
Unpin the wrong item
- Right-click the website or web-app icon on the taskbar.
- Select Unpin from taskbar.
- If you still need that app, leave it installed and launch it from its own Start-menu entry when required; unpinning only removes the taskbar shortcut.
- To pin the intended item, locate the correct Edge browser or site shortcut, right-click it, and choose the available pin-to-taskbar command.
Microsoft’s Edge guidance recommends this unpin-and-repin approach when the wrong website shortcut is attached to the taskbar. It avoids changing Windows settings when the real issue is simply that two different applications have been pinned.
Windows, tabs, sites and profiles: the distinctions that prevent misdiagnosis
Separate windows versus tabs
Taskbar grouping operates at the window level. Ten tabs in one Edge window are still one taskbar window. Two Edge windows, even if they contain identical sites, can be shown as two buttons when Never is selected.
Main browser versus installed site
The main browser shortcut launches Edge itself. An installed site launches a site-specific application window built on Edge technology. Both can appear on the taskbar, but they are separate applications from Windows’ point of view and can have different pin states.

Edge profiles can give windows different names, avatars, or account contexts. A profile or shortcut association can make the result look like a duplicate browser even when taskbar grouping and pinning are configured correctly.

Troubleshoot when the second icon remains
Work through these checks in order. They separate a normal Windows behavior from a shortcut or installation association problem.
- Confirm the desired outcome. Decide whether you want separate buttons for separate windows or one compact Edge button. Do not use Never if your objective is to hide additional window buttons.
- Check the grouping value. Return to Taskbar settings > Taskbar behaviours and read the current value. A setting of Never intentionally creates separate labeled buttons; Always or When taskbar is full provide grouped behavior.
- Count windows, not tabs. Close extra tabs and then open a clearly separate Edge window. If the buttons change only when a new window is created, the setting is working as designed.
- Inspect the icon’s identity. Right-click the additional button and look for a site name, web-app name, or a different profile identity. If it is a site app, unpin it and repin the intended shortcut.
- Check the launch shortcut. Start Edge from the shortcut you intend to use, then open its profile menu and confirm the expected profile. If you have several Edge shortcuts, keep only the one you actually want pinned.
- Compare behavior after closing all Edge windows. Reopen the browser from the intended pinned shortcut. This removes ambiguity about which existing window or profile supplied the additional button.
- Escalate cautiously if the association still looks wrong. At that point the cause may be a shortcut target, profile association, installation state, or an Edge/Windows update interaction. The official guidance cited here does not provide one universal repair command. Do not treat registry deletion or removal of a profile folder as a guaranteed fix; those actions can remove settings or data without addressing the taskbar association.
Stable Windows behavior versus Insider previews
Microsoft Insider documentation has described a preview experience combining Never combine with labels so every app window appears as a separate labeled button, including on a vertical taskbar. Insider builds are previews, so their placement, wording, and exact visual behavior can differ from a stable Windows release. Use the controls visible in your installed Windows version rather than assuming a preview screenshot matches your PC.
The underlying meaning remains consistent: Never tells Windows not to combine windows from the same application. It does not convert tabs into windows, remove installed site apps, or choose an Edge profile for you.
A quick decision checklist
- Are you comparing two Edge windows, or tabs inside one window?
- Is Combine taskbar buttons set to the mode you actually want?
- Does the extra icon have a website or service name?
- Was a site or web app pinned independently from the main Edge shortcut?
- Does the Edge profile shown in the window match the profile you intended to launch?
- After unpinning the wrong item and launching from the intended shortcut, does the behavior match the selected grouping mode?
For separate Edge-window buttons, use Never. For a compact browser representation, use Always or When taskbar is full, and remove any separately pinned website app that you do not want beside the browser. This addresses the two common causes without confusing tabs, windows, and installed sites.
