To play Microsoft Edge Surf offline, open Edge, type edge://surf in the address bar, and press Enter. Choose a surfer and start playing. The game is built into Microsoft Edge, so it is not a separate download or ordinary website that must load from the internet.
Surf is available on supported Edge versions for Windows, macOS, and iOS. Microsoft’s current Surf policy documentation lists Android as unsupported and does not explicitly guarantee Linux support, even though Edge itself is available for Linux.

How to open Microsoft Edge Surf
- Open Microsoft Edge on a supported device.
- Click or tap the address bar.
- Enter
edge://surfexactly. - Press Enter, or submit the address on a phone or tablet.
- Choose a surfer and begin the game.
The direct edge://surf address is the most dependable way to launch the game. Microsoft also says Edge can show a link to Surf on its offline error page when the browser detects that the device has no internet connection. That link is convenient, but you do not need to wait for an offline error: enter the internal address yourself.

Is Edge Surf really playable offline?
Yes. Microsoft describes Surf as Edge’s built-in offline game. Once the browser is installed and the feature is available on the device, edge://surf is an internal Edge address rather than a normal internet URL. That is why it can open without a working connection.
There are important limits, however. Offline access does not override an unsupported platform, an outdated browser, or an administrator policy that disables the game. Availability can also vary by device, market, browser version, and the gradual rollout of mobile releases.

Microsoft’s current AllowSurfGame policy documentation lists the following Surf-specific compatibility information:
| Platform | Current documentation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Supported with Edge version 83 or later | Update Edge if the game does not open. |
| macOS | Supported with Edge version 83 or later | Update Edge if necessary. |
| iOS | Supported with Edge version 146 or later | Check the installed Edge version and update through the App Store. |
| Android | Listed as unsupported | Do not assume that installing or updating Edge will add Surf support. |
| Linux | Not explicitly listed in the current Surf policy table | Edge is available for Linux, but Surf support should not be treated as guaranteed without checking the specific installation. |
The iOS requirement is especially worth checking. Microsoft’s mobile release information lists Edge version 146 as released in March 2026, with later versions released or planned afterward. Mobile releases are progressively rolled out, so a particular device may receive an update later than another.
Surf game modes
Open the game’s settings menu to change modes and review the relevant controls. Microsoft documents three modes.

Endless
In Endless, continue surfing for as long as possible while avoiding obstacles and the kraken. The run ends when you lose all available lives or otherwise fail according to the game’s on-screen rules. This is the straightforward mode for improving distance and chasing a high score.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Time trial gives you a fixed course and records how quickly you finish it. Coins can reduce the recorded time. Because the course remains the same, the mode rewards route planning and repeated attempts: learn where obstacles appear, collect useful coins without taking a dangerous detour, and refine the route.
Zig zag
In Zig zag, pass through gates in sequence. Missing a gate resets the streak, but the run continues until you lose all lives. The objective is therefore not just survival; it is maintaining a long, accurate chain of gate passes.
Controls: keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepads
Microsoft officially supports keyboard, mouse, touch input, and gamepads. The company specifically identifies Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and Xbox Adaptive Controller support, including gamepad rumble. Open Surf’s settings menu for the instructions associated with your device; those instructions are the authoritative reference because mappings can differ between platforms and versions.
On a typical desktop installation, commonly reported keyboard controls are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Spacebar: start the game.
- Left and right arrow keys: steer.
- Up arrow: stop.
- Mouse movement: steer, where supported.
These desktop mappings should be treated as common rather than universal. If a key does nothing, open the in-game settings instead of assuming that Edge or the game is broken.
You do not need a controller to play. Keyboard, mouse, and touch are supported input options. If you prefer a gamepad, an Xbox Wireless Controller is an optional way to play Edge Surf with a supported controller; it is not required for launching the game.
Accessibility and easier play
Edge Surf includes several options intended to make play more accessible or less demanding:

- PowerPlay wireless charging: Never worry about your battery life again. Add the power play wireless charging system to keep your G502 Lightspeed Wireless Mouse and other compatible G mice charged while at rest and at play. Powerplay wireless charging system sold separately
- Light speed wireless gaming mouse: Exclusive Logitech G ultra-fast wireless technology used by Pro gamers in competitions worldwide

- 11 customizable buttons and hyper fast scroll wheel: Assign custom macro and shortcut commands to the buttons for each game with Logitech G hub software. Use hyper fast scrolling to rapidly review menus, long web pages and more
- Note: In case of Wireless mouse, the USB receiver will be provided inside or along with the mouse
- High visibility mode highlights object hit boxes, making collisions and hazards easier to judge.
- Reduced speed mode slows the action and gives you more time to react.
- Screen-reader support is included among the accessibility features Microsoft identifies.
- High-contrast support can improve visibility for some players.
- Xbox Adaptive Controller support allows compatible alternative inputs.
Find these options in Surf’s settings menu. If the game feels too fast or obstacles are difficult to distinguish, try reduced speed and high visibility before changing browser settings.
Using an Xbox Adaptive Controller
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is an optional accessibility device, not a requirement for Surf. Xbox describes it as a hub that can connect external switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks. On Windows PCs, it can connect through Bluetooth or USB, and profiles can be configured through the Xbox Accessories app. External switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks may be purchased separately.
This makes an adaptive setup relevant for players who cannot comfortably use a conventional keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, or gamepad. Microsoft’s Surf announcement specifically names the Xbox Adaptive Controller as a supported input device.
How to check your Edge version
On desktop:
- Open Edge.
- Select the Settings and more button, shown as three dots in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Help and feedback.
- Select About Microsoft Edge.
- Allow Edge to check for and install available updates, then restart the browser if requested.
On iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, search for Microsoft Edge, and check whether an Update button is available. The current Surf-specific documentation lists iOS Edge 146 or later as the supported threshold.
What to do if edge://surf does not open
1. Confirm that you are using Edge
The edge://surf address is an internal Microsoft Edge feature. Entering it in another browser will not provide the same result. Make sure the application name is Microsoft Edge and that you are typing the address into its address bar, not into a search engine.
2. Check the platform and version
Android is currently listed as unsupported for Surf. On Windows and macOS, check that Edge is version 83 or later. On iOS, check for version 146 or later. Linux users should be cautious about assuming compatibility merely because Edge itself has a Linux release; the current Surf policy table does not explicitly list Linux.

3. Check whether an administrator disabled Surf
Work, school, family-managed, and other controlled devices may have Microsoft’s AllowSurfGame enterprise policy disabled. When that policy is disabled, users cannot play Surf offline or navigate to edge://surf.
If the device is managed, contact the administrator rather than trying unofficial fixes. The policy can be applied per profile, so the game may work in one Edge profile but not another.
4. Restart Edge after a policy change
Microsoft’s policy documentation says dynamic refresh is not supported for this setting. If an administrator changes the policy, Edge must be restarted before the change takes effect. Fully close and reopen the browser, then try edge://surf again.

5. Review the in-game settings
If Surf opens but the controls do not behave as expected, open its settings and review the instructions for your input method. A keyboard layout that works on one platform may not be the correct mapping on another.
6. Do not install unofficial “fixes”
You should not need browser zoom tricks, modified game files, unofficial clones, or third-party downloads to use the ordinary built-in game. These workarounds are unnecessary and are not part of Microsoft’s supported instructions.

Microsoft documents high scores for the game’s modes, but the cited documentation does not establish that scores synchronize across devices or Microsoft accounts. Treat a score as local to the relevant game installation unless Surf itself clearly indicates otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Microsoft Edge Surf without Wi-Fi?
Yes. Surf is Edge’s built-in offline game. Open Microsoft Edge and enter edge://surf. Offline play can still be blocked by an unsupported platform, an outdated Edge version, or an administrator policy.
Does Edge Surf work on Android?
Microsoft’s current Surf-specific policy documentation lists Android as unsupported. Do not assume that the game will become available simply by updating Edge.
Do I need an Xbox controller to play Edge Surf?
No. Microsoft supports keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepads. An Xbox Wireless Controller is only an optional input choice.
Why does edge://surf not work on my work or school computer?
An administrator may have disabled the Microsoft Edge AllowSurfGame policy. Ask the administrator to check it. After a policy change, Edge must be restarted because dynamic refresh is not supported.
The Bottom Line
For the normal supported setup, the answer is simple: open Microsoft Edge, enter edge://surf, and play. Windows and macOS users need Edge 83 or later, iOS users need Edge 146 or later under Microsoft’s current documentation, and Android is not listed as supported. If the address fails on a managed device, an administrator policy is a more likely cause than a missing download.
