Microsoft Edge’s built-in Surf game started as a simple offline diversion, but it has grown into a surprisingly capable browser mini-game. Enter edge://surf in Edge to play three modes—Endless, Time Trial, and Zig Zag—with controller support, accessibility settings, mobile availability, high scores, and hidden secrets.
A February 2025 report also described refreshed visuals, character customization, improved navigation, and a new collection mode. Those reported changes should be treated separately from the features Microsoft currently documents publicly, because a complete dated changelog and rollout version were not available.

What is Microsoft Edge Surf?
Surf is Microsoft Edge’s built-in surfing game. It appears as part of Edge’s offline experience when the browser cannot connect to the internet, but you do not need to disconnect first: open Edge, type edge://surf into the address bar, and press Enter.
The game is inspired by the classic Windows game SkiFree. Instead of skiing down a slope, you surf through open water while avoiding islands, obstacles, enemies, and the Kraken. The classic design also includes collectible hearts and boosts that help you survive longer or gain temporary advantages.

Surf is still a browser-integrated feature rather than a separately installed Microsoft Store game. It is free and requires no purchase or subscription.
Microsoft’s current Surf feature page describes the game as available across desktop and mobile, although exact controls, menus, and feature availability can vary by device, market, and Edge version.
How to launch Edge Surf
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
edge://surf. - Press Enter.
- Choose a mode from the game’s mode-selection or settings interface.
You can also wait for Edge’s offline page to offer the game when an internet connection is unavailable. The direct internal URL is generally the more reliable way to open it on demand.
The three game modes
Endless
Endless is the straightforward survival mode: keep surfing for as long as possible, avoid hazards, collect useful items, and stay ahead of the Kraken. It is the closest match to the original offline-Easter-egg experience.
Time Trial
Time Trial uses a fixed course. The objective is to finish as quickly as possible, with coins helping reduce the recorded time. Because the route does not change in the same way as an endless run, learning the course and refining your line become more important than simply surviving.
Zig Zag
Zig Zag challenges you to pass through consecutive gates. Missing a gate resets the streak, and the run continues until you lose all available lives. It rewards consistency and concentration rather than only fast reactions.
Why Surf is better than the original Easter egg
Surf became a permanent Stable-channel Edge feature on May 26, 2020, beginning with Edge build 83.0.478.37. Microsoft’s launch announcement already described a much broader game than the early hidden prototype.

What changed in the reported 2025 update?
On February 15, 2025, a report attributed to Edge senior program manager William Devereux described a broader Surf update. The reported additions included:

These details are useful context for the “getting better” claim, but they require qualification. The available evidence does not establish the exact Edge version in which every change reached Stable, whether the rollout was global, whether the features appeared simultaneously on desktop and mobile, or whether Microsoft published a complete official changelog.
It is also not safe to assume that the reported “collection mode” is identical to the coin and item collection already present in other modes. The February 2025 report may be describing a distinct mode or a broader collection-focused feature.
In short, the current evidence supports this timeline: Surf expanded substantially by 2020, Microsoft continues to present it as an active feature with modern controls and settings, and a February 2025 report described another visual and gameplay refresh. It does not support claiming a precisely versioned, universally available redesign without further official release documentation.

Controls, accessibility, and secrets
Surf supports keyboard and mouse controls on desktop, touch input on compatible devices, and several mainstream controller families. That makes it more flexible than many hidden browser games, especially for players who prefer a gamepad or need alternative input options.

High-visibility mode can make collision areas easier to understand, while reduced-speed mode gives players more time to react. Microsoft also documented high-contrast and screen-reader support when the game entered the Stable channel.
The game includes hidden Easter eggs and cheat-code-style features, but Microsoft’s current public page does not document every secret. Treat online lists of codes as unofficial unless they are confirmed by Microsoft or work in your particular Edge build.
High scores should also be treated as local or profile-specific game results unless Microsoft explicitly confirms synchronization. Do not assume that scores or settings automatically transfer between devices.
If edge://surf will not open
Check that you are using Edge
The address is an internal Microsoft Edge URL. It will not launch Surf in Chrome, Firefox, or another Chromium-based browser.
Update Edge
In Edge, open Settings and more (…) → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge. Allow Edge to check for updates, install any available update, then restart the browser.
Check for organization restrictions
Schools and businesses can disable Surf with Microsoft Edge’s AllowSurfGame policy. When that policy is disabled, both the offline game and navigation to edge://surf can be blocked. On a managed device, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Microsoft warns that features can vary by device type, market, and browser version. Mobile may expose different controls or interface elements, and a feature described in third-party coverage may still be rolling out, limited to a channel, or changed later.

Is Edge Surf worth playing?
Yes, if you want a quick game that starts immediately and can work without an internet connection. It has more replay value than a single-screen offline gag because the modes have different objectives, the game supports several input methods, and accessibility settings make it more usable for a wider range of players.
No, if you are expecting a full commercial game. Surf does not replace a standalone title with a large progression system, a conventional achievements ecosystem, multiplayer, or guaranteed feature parity across every device.
The most accurate description is somewhere between “secret Easter egg” and “full game”: Surf is a small but unusually polished browser feature that Microsoft has continued to expand.
