Microsoft Edge’s built-in Surf game is real and still available, but it is not a new 2026 release. Microsoft announced its general Stable-channel availability on May 26, 2020, beginning with Edge 83.0.478.37. On a supported Edge installation, enter edge://surf in the address bar to start playing.
The offline-friendly mini-game is free to use within Edge and requires no separate download or purchase.

How to open the Edge Surf game
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the address bar.
- Enter
edge://surf. - Press Enter.
- Choose a mode and start playing.
Microsoft also describes Surf as playable when Edge is offline. The game itself does not require an active internet connection, although Edge must already be installed and may need an internet connection for updates.
If you type the command into a search box instead of Edge’s address bar, a search-results page will open rather than the game.

What is Microsoft Edge Surf?
Surf is a built-in browser mini-game inspired by the classic Windows game SkiFree. You guide a surfer through an endless-looking water course, avoiding islands, other surfers, obstacles, and the Kraken.
It is separate from newer Edge gaming features such as Game Assist and Game Bar. Surf does not require Windows 11 Game Bar or a separate gaming installation.
The three game modes
Endless
Ride as far as possible while avoiding hazards and the Kraken. This is the straightforward score-chasing mode.
Time trial
Complete a fixed course as quickly as possible. Because the course stays the same, you can learn the route and improve your time. Coins can help during a run.

Controls and supported devices
Microsoft lists support for keyboard, mouse, touch, Xbox controllers, PlayStation controllers, Switch Pro controllers, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Gamepad haptic feedback, commonly called rumble, is also supported.
Open the game’s settings or instructions menu for the exact controls available on your device. Button mappings can vary by input method, so it is better not to assume that every controller uses the same layout.

Microsoft’s launch announcement documented several accessibility-related features:

- High-contrast support
- Screen-reader support
- High-visibility mode
- Reduced-speed mode
- Xbox Adaptive Controller support
High-visibility mode highlights collision or hit boxes around objects. Reduced-speed mode slows the game, giving players more time to react. These are documented features, not a claim that Surf represents a complete modern accessibility audit.
Are scores saved?
Surf keeps a personal high score for each of its three modes and notifies you when you set a new record. Its settings menu includes an option to reset statistics.
Microsoft’s cited documentation does not establish cloud synchronization, Microsoft-account score saving, or cross-device leaderboards, so scores should not be assumed to follow you between installations.
Availability on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android
The phrase “available for everyone” referred to the general Stable-channel release in 2020, not universal access on every device or managed installation.

Microsoft’s current AllowSurfGame policy documentation lists:
- Windows: Edge 83 and later
- macOS: Edge 83 and later
- iOS: Edge 146 and later in the policy table
- Android: listed as unsupported in that policy entry
The original public release began with Edge 83.0.478.37. That is historical release information, not a requirement that current users remain on that exact build. Mobile behavior should be treated separately from desktop Edge, particularly because Microsoft’s policy table does not list Android support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a school or workplace disable Surf?
Yes. Administrators can use Microsoft Edge’s AllowSurfGame enterprise policy. When the policy is disabled, users cannot play Surf offline or by visiting edge://surf. When it is enabled or not configured, the game is allowed.
That means a compatible Edge version may still refuse to open Surf on an employer- or school-managed computer.

If Edge Surf will not open
- Confirm that
edge://surfwas entered in Edge’s address bar. - Update Edge if the browser is unusually old.
- Try opening the page while online, then test offline play separately.
- Check whether the computer or browser is managed by an organization.
- Ask the administrator whether the
AllowSurfGamepolicy is disabled. - Check the platform limitation, especially if you are using mobile Edge.
- Restart Edge after an update or policy change.
When Edge Surf is worth trying
Surf is a good fit if you want a quick browser game with no installation, need something that can work during an internet outage, or prefer a lightweight endless-runner experience with controller and accessibility support.
Its limits are equally clear: it is a compact mini-game rather than a full surfing title, and its deliberately repetitive score-chasing design does not provide the progression, campaign, multiplayer, or online leaderboard features associated with larger games.
The bottom line
Microsoft Edge Surf is still available on supported Edge installations. Open edge://surf to play it, including offline, but remember that the “new” announcement dates from May 26, 2020. Platform support and organization policies can prevent access, so “available to everyone” does not mean every Edge user on every device can launch it.
