Premium, Premium Deluxe and Aviator editions received early access on December 3. The PSVR2 feature originally announced as a free 2026 update is now available, with current reporting placing its release on April 30, 2026.
The PS5 version includes Career Mode, Free Flight, aircraft and helicopter operations, a globe-scale streamed world and an in-game Marketplace. But it requires a constant internet connection, does not support cross-play with Xbox or PC, and does not transfer Marketplace purchases from those platforms.

What was announced—and what changed
Microsoft and PlayStation announced the PS5 version on September 24, 2025. It was the first PlayStation release for the Microsoft Flight Simulator franchise, developed by Asobo Studio in partnership with Microsoft Game Studios.

It also promised PSVR2 support through a free update planned for 2026.

That original wording is now dated. The game has already launched, and current reporting and PlayStation Store material indicate that PSVR2 support is available. Microsoft’s earlier official pages may still describe VR as planned for 2026, so the April 30 date is best attributed to current reporting rather than presented as a newly published Microsoft release note.

PSVR2 support: what PS5 owners get
PSVR2 support is a free update rather than a feature locked to a more expensive game edition. It is available on PS5 and PS5 Pro according to current reporting. The PlayStation Store listing identifies both sitting and standing play styles and supports PSVR2 Sense controllers.

However, PSVR2 is required to use the VR mode, and the store’s “optional” designation should not be confused with the feature being included without the separate headset purchase.
VR flight can be more immersive but also more demanding and potentially uncomfortable during long sessions. Players who want occasional casual flying may be better served by a standard controller, while existing PSVR2 owners have a much stronger reason to choose the PS5 version.
What is included in the PS5 version?
This is not a stripped-down console adaptation. The PS5 release includes the major 2024 experience, including:
- Career Mode, with aviation qualifications and jobs.
- Free Flight and world exploration.
- Photo and World Photographer modes.
- Airplane and helicopter operations.
- A globe-scale environment with more than 40,000 airports and runways and more than 60,000 helipads, according to Microsoft.
- Edition-dependent aircraft and airport content, reaching up to 125 aircraft.
The streamed world is also the reason the game has an unusually important connectivity requirement: this is not a simulator that installs once and then functions as a conventional offline game.

PS5 editions and US list prices
| Edition | US list price | Aircraft | Airports | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | 70 | 150 | Most newcomers |
| Deluxe | $99.99 | 80 | 155 | Players who want its additional aircraft |
| Premium Deluxe | $129.99 | 95 | 160 | Enthusiasts targeting its specific aircraft and airports |
| Aviator | $199.99 | 125 | 160 | Collectors and dedicated simulator fans |
Prices are US list-price figures reported on the PlayStation Store in August 2026 and may vary by country or promotion. The aircraft counts are edition-specific; the higher tiers do not mean that the core simulator is otherwise unavailable.
Recommendation: Standard is the sensible starting point for most buyers. Choose Deluxe or Premium Deluxe only when their additional aircraft and airports matter to you. Aviator is difficult to justify unless you specifically want its broadest aircraft package. No evidence indicates that a higher edition improves PSVR2 support.
The original preorder promotion included the Northrop T-38A Talon with every PS5 preorder, while the three premium editions also received early access. Those are historical preorder benefits, not automatic incentives for a new purchase in 2026.
Important requirements before buying
Constant internet connection: Required. The simulator streams world content and cannot be launched while offline according to PlayStation’s FAQ. A physical disc does not change this: the official FAQ says digital installation and an internet connection are still required.
PlayStation Plus: Required for multiplayer features. It is not described as necessary for the simulator’s other online-dependent systems, but the game still requires an internet connection regardless of subscription status.
Microsoft account: The PS5 FAQ says a Microsoft account or Gamertag is not required to play on PlayStation 5. A PlayStation account and online connection remain part of the PlayStation experience.
Cross-play: Not supported between the PlayStation, Xbox and PC versions. The platforms use separate multiplayer environments and separate leaderboards.
Marketplace transfers: Marketplace add-ons purchased on Xbox or PC do not transfer to PS5. Treat the PlayStation version as a separate platform purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers are supported, so a flight stick is not mandatory. The Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 was confirmed for launch support and is the safest externally controlled option identified in the official PS5 material.
Do not assume that every PC yoke, throttle quadrant, rudder-pedal set or flight stick will work on PS5. Compatibility is model-specific; check current PlayStation support before buying additional hardware.
How the PS5 version fits different buyers
- New to the series: Buy Standard first. It includes the core simulator and Career Mode, and DualSense is sufficient to begin.
- Already own PSVR2: This is the clearest PS5 audience for the release. You get a console route to the simulator’s VR mode without needing a gaming PC.
- Already own the Xbox or PC version: Buy again only if you specifically want PlayStation access, PSVR2 support or console convenience. Your multiplayer environment and Marketplace purchases do not carry over.
- Dedicated flight-sim enthusiast: Higher editions can make sense for their aircraft and airport packages, but the PS5 version has a narrower confirmed peripheral picture than the PC ecosystem.
- Offline or bandwidth-constrained player: This is a poor fit. Neither the digital version nor the physical disc provides standalone offline play.
Other purchases and optional content
The PlayStation Store lists optional Simverse Coin packs and edition upgrades. These purchases are not presented as necessary for the core simulator or PSVR2 mode. The same applies to Marketplace content: treat it as optional content and remember that purchases from Xbox or PC do not transfer to PS5.
A PSVR2 headset is also an optional hardware purchase, not a requirement for playing the game. The official PSVR2 product page is the appropriate place to check current headset availability and pricing, which can change independently of the game.
Verdict
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is no longer “coming” to PS5: it arrived on December 8, 2025, and PSVR2 support is now available after the promised 2026 update. It is a significant console release and an especially relevant purchase for existing PSVR2 owners, but it is not a replacement for PC flexibility. The deal-breakers are clear: constant internet access is mandatory, PS5 players are isolated from Xbox and PC multiplayer, and existing Marketplace add-ons do not transfer.
