Microsoft’s gaming business surpassed Windows in quarterly revenue after the Activision Blizzard acquisition, but Microsoft did not report that gaming profit exceeded Windows profit. The distinction matters: the widely cited milestone was a sales comparison, not a disclosed comparison of earnings.
What actually surpassed Windows?
In Microsoft’s fiscal 2024 second quarter, the three months ended December 31, 2023, gaming revenue was about $7.1 billion, compared with about $5.3 billion for Windows. It was a quarterly revenue milestone, not a full-year result. The figures and contemporaneous analysis are reported by GeekWire.
Microsoft completed its Activision Blizzard acquisition on October 13, 2023, so the December quarter was the first reporting period to include the acquired business. Gaming had already come close to Windows in the comparable prior-year quarter, reportedly within roughly $50 million; Activision accelerated an existing trend rather than creating it from nothing.
Why Activision changed the comparison
Activision Blizzard brought a large publishing and mobile-games business into Microsoft’s accounts, including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Candy Crush, Diablo, Overwatch, and King’s mobile portfolio. Those franchises earn money across platforms and business models—not just on Xbox consoles. The deal is commonly described as roughly $69 billion; Microsoft’s annual report discusses the acquisition and its accounting effects in its fiscal 2024 filing.

The effect was especially visible in content and services. Microsoft reported fiscal 2024 gaming revenue growth of $6.0 billion, or 39%, and Xbox content-and-services growth of 50%; the acquisition accounted for 44 percentage points of that content-and-services growth. By contrast, Xbox hardware revenue declined 13% for the fiscal year. The milestone therefore reflects the scale of Microsoft’s broader gaming portfolio, not a surge in console sales alone.
Microsoft’s comparison also uses specific reported business categories. Windows revenue primarily covers Windows Commercial products and cloud services plus Windows OEM revenue; it is not a tally of every Microsoft product connected to PCs. Both Windows and gaming sit within the broader More Personal Computing segment, alongside businesses such as search and news advertising and Devices.

Revenue, gross profit, operating income, and net profit are different
Revenue is money generated from sales before costs are deducted. Gross profit is revenue minus the cost of sales. Operating income subtracts operating expenses such as research and development, sales, and marketing. Net profit is what remains after additional items, including interest and taxes. A business can lead in revenue and still trail another in profit if its costs are higher.
Microsoft does not publish a standalone gaming income statement that can be directly compared with Windows on these measures. Its fiscal 2024 filing says gaming contributed to gross-margin growth, while acquisition-related costs also increased expenses: Activision Blizzard contributed 10 percentage points of net impact to More Personal Computing gross-margin growth and 34 percentage points to that segment’s operating-expense growth. Research and development expense growth also included a seven-point contribution from the acquisition.

Those are segment-level effects, not a gaming profit calculation. More Personal Computing includes businesses beyond gaming and Windows, and the filing does not provide a comparable standalone operating-income figure for each. Acquisition accounting, integration spending, amortization, and transition costs further complicate any attempt to infer profit from revenue alone. Contemporary analysis also noted that Activision’s reported quarterly revenue of $2.08 billion translated into only a small profit after reported transition costs, but that observation is not a substitute for a Microsoft-disclosed gaming-versus-Windows profit table.
What the milestone says about Microsoft’s gaming strategy
The shift is from a console-centered reading of the business toward a cross-platform content and services model. Game sales, subscriptions, downloadable content, in-game purchases, and mobile advertising can reach customers on Xbox, PC, mobile devices, and competing platforms. Acquiring Activision Blizzard expanded that portfolio substantially, while the company’s declining fiscal 2024 hardware revenue shows why gaming growth cannot be reduced to console performance.

It also helps explain the strategic significance without overstating the financial conclusion: Microsoft’s gaming business had become large enough to top Windows in a single quarter’s revenue, but that does not establish that it was more profitable, that the acquisition had paid for itself, or that gaming would remain ahead in every subsequent quarter.

Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 second-quarter earnings material reported gaming revenue down 9% year over year and Xbox content-and-services revenue down 5%. It also reported a 3% decline in operating income within More Personal Computing and an approximately 27% gaming operating margin. Microsoft said weaker first-party content weighed on the quarter, while Game Pass growth partly offset the decline. The accurate takeaway is specific: after Activision Blizzard was added to Microsoft’s accounts, gaming exceeded Windows in quarterly revenue in the December 2023 quarter. Microsoft’s published figures do not show that gaming profit surpassed Windows profit.
