Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney did not announce or substantiate a Microsoft plan to buy Valve or Steam in his June 24, 2026 interview with PC Gamer. He discussed a more open, interconnected games industry, praised Microsoft’s marketplace approach and criticized aspects of Steam’s fees and reach. The acquisition angle is not established by the interview.
What Sweeney actually said
Sweeney spoke with PC Gamer on June 24, 2026, after Epic’s Unreal Fest Chicago presentation. His broader argument was for what he called “Team Open”: a gaming ecosystem in which social connections, economies and some digital items could work across games and platforms.
He said difficult conditions in the games business could give companies a reason to cooperate, and argued that no one company—whether Microsoft, Valve, Sony, Apple or Google—would end up with an absolute gaming monopoly. That was a prediction about competition, not a statement about acquisition talks.
Why Microsoft came up
Sweeney’s comments about Microsoft were favorable, not dismissive. He described the company as taking a forward-looking, open approach and cited a 12% Microsoft Store developer fee. That figure is Sweeney’s characterization as reported by GamesRadar; it should not be treated as a universal rate for every product, transaction or store program.

The point was about marketplace economics: a smaller share of a sale can leave more revenue with a developer. But the fee percentage alone does not determine which store earns a game more money. A larger audience, sales conversion, discovery, services and other costs can matter more than the cut on an individual transaction.
What he criticized about Steam
Fees and distribution choices
Sweeney argued that Steam’s fees can make direct sales or other storefronts more attractive for publishers that already have large audiences. In separate comments covered by GamesRadar, he used companies including HoYoverse as examples. That example needs qualification: the same coverage notes that HoYoverse has released games on Steam, including Zenless Zone Zero. It is not accurate to say the company wholly avoids the platform.

Reach beyond PC
Sweeney acknowledged Steam’s strength on PC while arguing that it does not encompass every major gaming community, pointing to audiences around Fortnite, Riot games and Genshin Impact. He also floated Steam availability on iPhone and Android as a hypothetical opportunity. That is a suggestion about potential expansion, not evidence that Valve plans a mobile launch or is seeking a buyer.
Likewise, describing Steam as less open in the areas Sweeney discussed is more precise than calling the whole service “closed.” Steam distributes third-party games and offers a broad set of community and commerce features; Sweeney’s criticism was about its fee structure, reach and openness relative to his preferred model.

Openness is not the same as a sale
Several distinct possibilities can get blurred together in acquisition headlines:
| Scenario | What it would mean | What Sweeney’s interview establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft buys Valve or Steam | An acquisition of the company or its storefront. | Nothing in the interview establishes an offer, negotiations or a planned purchase. |
| Microsoft and Valve partner | A commercial or technical agreement without an acquisition. | No such agreement is established by the remarks described in the interview. |
| Steam expands to more platforms | Valve makes Steam available beyond its current footprint. | Sweeney raised mobile availability as a hypothetical opportunity, not a confirmed plan. |
| Stores and games interoperate more | Social features, identities or selected digital systems work across platforms. | This is the kind of broader direction Sweeney advocated with “Team Open.” |
The PC Gamer interview does not say Sweeney was responding to a confirmed Microsoft–Valve deal, nor does it show him directly confirming or rejecting an acquisition rumor. No company announcement or other named, credible acquisition report is established by the cited coverage. The careful conclusion is that the acquisition claim remains unverified here, not that a deal has been disproved everywhere.

Why Sweeney’s position deserves context
Sweeney is advocating a market structure that could benefit players and developers, but he is also the head of Epic, which operates the Epic Games Store and competes with Steam for PC distribution. Lower fees and interoperability are commercially relevant to Epic as well as to developers. That interest does not make his argument wrong; it does mean his criticism should be understood as a competitor’s case, not a neutral assessment.
Interoperability also involves more than making a friends list portable. Shared accounts, purchases, refunds, moderation, privacy, age controls, currencies, fraud prevention and platform-holder rules all have to be resolved. A digital item that works in one game may not be suitable or technically usable in another. Sweeney’s “Team Open” is a direction for the industry, not proof those questions have already been solved.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
His broader prediction that no company will control gaming absolutely should also be kept separate from legal claims about monopoly or market dominance. Those terms have specific economic and legal meanings; the interview’s statement is Sweeney’s view of where competition is headed.
