microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll is a Microsoft Windows Media Center system assembly, primarily associated with Windows 7. If it is missing or cannot load, repair Windows and the Media Center component rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the error usually comes from an old application that still expects a Windows Media Center file. Windows Media Center was not included in Windows 10, so the application itself may need repair, replacement, or a compatible environment.
Fix microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll errors in order
Start with the first fix and test the affected program after each step. The common messages include:
- “microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll is missing”
- “microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll was not found”
- “Cannot find microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll”
- “Error loading microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll”
- “The program can’t start because microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll is missing from your computer”
These messages do not identify the root cause by themselves. The file may be damaged, quarantined, unavailable because of the Windows edition, or requested by an obsolete application.

1. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the safest first repair on Windows 7, and it is also useful when an older application on Windows 10 or Windows 11 is reporting a damaged Windows component.
- Save your work and close running programs.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open the program that produced the error.
A successful repair may report that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them. If the program now opens, the protected Windows files were the likely cause.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, extract the relevant details:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Review the resulting sfcdetails.txt file, then retry DISM with matching Windows installation media if Windows Update cannot supply the repair files:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to a suitable installation source. The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level as closely as possible. Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM guidance explains the supported repair process.
Running these commands manually is safe, but it can be difficult to determine which component changed when the repair fails. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system-file problems and show what needs attention; its repair function is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
2. Check whether Windows Media Center is disabled
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes, plus a restart
A Windows 7 installation may still contain Media Center while the feature is disabled.
Rank #2
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Media Features.
- Look for Windows Media Center.
- Select it if it is unchecked.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the affected application again.
Feature names and availability vary by edition. If Windows Media Center is already selected, clear the selection, restart, select it again, and restart once more. This can rebuild an incomplete feature registration, but it will not repair broader component-store corruption, so return to DISM and SFC if the error remains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Check for Windows 7 N or KN
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on update availability
Windows 7 N and KN editions omit Windows Media Center and other Windows Media technologies. They require the appropriate Microsoft Media Feature Pack rather than a copied DLL.
To identify the edition:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Read the Windows edition shown in the dialog.
- If the name includes N or KN, obtain the Media Feature Pack intended for that Windows 7 Service Pack and architecture.
- Install it, restart Windows, and test the program.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 7 Media Feature Pack documentation to identify the appropriate package. Do not use a random DLL as a substitute for an omitted Windows feature.
If the edition is not N or KN but Media Center is unavailable, the component may have been removed, damaged, or disabled. Continue with DISM, SFC, and Windows repair rather than copying files from another computer.

4. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine system file, although a suspicious file with the same name should not be restored automatically.

- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
Microsoft.MediaCenter.Interop.dll. - Open the event and record its original path and detection details.
- Do not select Allow on device until the file’s path, signature, and Windows installation have been checked.
- Run DISM and SFC after resolving the detection.
If the file was in an unexpected application folder, had no valid Microsoft signature, or was associated with malware removal, leave it quarantined and scan the computer. Do not add a broad antivirus exclusion. Microsoft explains the risks and available actions in its Protection History documentation.
5. Verify the file and architecture
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Microsoft’s Windows Media Center security documentation lists both x86 and x64 copies of this assembly. Documented Windows 7-era versions include 6.1.7600.16867, 6.1.7600.21030, 6.1.7601.17669, and 6.1.7601.21792. The correct file depends on the installed Windows component and the application requesting it.
Search the Windows directory from an elevated Command Prompt:
where /r %windir% Microsoft.MediaCenter.Interop.dll
You can also search with PowerShell:
Get-ChildItem "$env:windir" -Filter Microsoft.MediaCenter.Interop.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system components are normally associated with System32, while 32-bit components are normally associated with SysWOW64. Do not treat those folder names as permission to copy files manually. The component store and servicing metadata determine which copy Windows should use.
Never replace an x64 file with an x86 file, or place a system assembly into an application directory simply because the error disappears temporarily. A wrong-architecture copy can create a new loading error and may be overwritten by servicing.
6. Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If only one old program reports the problem, it may contain an outdated Media Center dependency or have an incomplete installation.

Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Install all applicable updates before repeating the repair:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
On Windows 7, modern official repair availability is limited because support ended on January 14, 2020. A damaged disk or interrupted update can repeatedly corrupt protected files. If the error returns after every repair, check disk health, review CBS.log, and investigate recent cleanup software, malware removal, failed updates, or disk failures.
If Windows cannot repair itself with a matching source, consider System Restore. Open Start, search for System Restore, select Recovery, then choose Open System Restore. Select a restore point from before the error began and review the affected programs before confirming. Microsoft’s System Restore documentation explains what will be changed. Personal files are preserved, but system files, registry settings, and installed programs can be rolled back.

Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry such as DllRegisterServer.
Best Value
- Important notice: Microsoft Media Center Remote Controller can not work under Windows XP
- Compatible with Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate PC
- Include all of the buttons and functions necessary for Microsoft certification, including official Green Button.
- Small USB dongle style receiver
- Use standard Microsoft drivers, no software to install.
Microsoft.MediaCenter.Interop.dll is documented as a Windows Media Center assembly, not as a DLL that should be manually registered. Running commands such as these is therefore not a suitable fix:
regsvr32 Microsoft.MediaCenter.Interop.dll
It will not restore a missing protected file, repair the component store, or install Windows Media Center. Microsoft describes the command’s actual registration purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not download the DLL from a random website
Avoid DLL download sites pages and copied files from another computer. The file may have the wrong Windows version, architecture, servicing state, metadata, or malicious contents. It may also fail because the real problem is a disabled Media Center feature, a damaged component store, or an obsolete application.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The safe sources are Windows servicing itself, Windows Update, the matching Microsoft Media Feature Pack for an N or KN edition, and the original application’s official installer. Let DISM and SFC restore protected files whenever possible.
Causes and the corresponding repair
| Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|
| Corrupted or missing Windows files | Run DISM, then SFC, restart, and install updates |
| Media Center disabled | Re-enable it under Windows Features |
| Windows 7 N or KN | Install the matching Microsoft Media Feature Pack |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection History and verify the file before restoring |
| Wrong architecture | Use Windows servicing, not a copied x86 or x64 DLL |
| Damaged disk or component store | Use matching repair media, System Restore, or Windows repair |
| Obsolete third-party application | Repair or reinstall the application, or replace it |
FAQ
Is microsoft.mediacenter.interop.dll a Visual C++ runtime?
No. Microsoft documents it as a Windows Media Center component. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the first-line repair for this file.
Does Windows 11 include this DLL?
Do not assume that it does. Windows Media Center was not included in Windows 10, and a Windows 10 or Windows 11 error commonly means an old application expects a legacy dependency. Repair the application or use a supported replacement.
Should I copy the file from another Windows 7 PC?
Not as a routine fix. The copy must match the Windows edition, language, architecture, servicing level, and component state. Use DISM, SFC, or matching installation media instead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can Device Manager fix it?
Usually not. This is a Windows Media Center assembly, not normally a device-driver problem. Use Device Manager only if the same application also reports a capture, tuner, audio, or other hardware problem. Right-click Start, select Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, and update or reinstall the specific device driver.
When driver problems are also present, Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale instead of making you hunt through many device entries; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace repairing the Media Center component itself.
When should I reinstall Windows?
Consider an in-place repair or reinstall when DISM cannot repair the component store, SFC repeatedly fails, System Restore is unavailable, and the error returns after application repair and malware checks. Back up personal files first and use installation media matching the current Windows edition and architecture.
