Microsoft did not confirm the permanent cancellation of an Xbox handheld. A May 2025 report said the company had paused or sidelined development of its own first-party device to focus on making Windows 11 work better on handheld gaming PCs. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s separate partnership with ASUS continued, producing the Windows-based ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, which launched worldwide on October 16, 2025.
As of August 18, 2026, the clearest reading is that Microsoft has deferred the riskiest part of the handheld market—building its own hardware—while pursuing an Xbox-style portable experience through ASUS and a redesigned Windows gaming interface.

What Microsoft actually paused
The reported pause concerned Microsoft’s own native or first-party Xbox handheld: an internal project associated with Xbox’s longer-term hardware plans. The report did not describe a publicly announced retail product, and it did not establish a permanent cancellation, confirmed specifications, price, design or launch date.
The original account, reported by Windows Central and tracked by Techmeme, described Microsoft’s device as separate from ASUS’s handheld project. A summary from WinBuzzer likewise characterized the change as a pause or sidelining rather than a formal cancellation.

That distinction matters. “Paused” means that priorities changed. It provides no new release date, but it also does not prove that the hardware will never return. Reports suggesting a definite 2027 launch should be treated as unconfirmed unless Microsoft makes an official announcement.
Why Windows became the priority
Microsoft’s problem is not simply that Windows lacks access to games. Windows supports Xbox PC games, Steam, Epic Games Store, other launchers, mods and ordinary desktop applications. Its problem is that a conventional desktop operating system is not automatically a good handheld console interface.
- Desktop menus and small touchscreen controls can be awkward on a compact device.
- Games may be spread across several storefronts and launchers.
- Gamepad input is inconsistent outside the game itself.
- Sleep, wake, updates, power management and battery behavior are especially important when the device is portable.
- Users may need more manual setup than they expect from a console.
Xbox users also expect a unified library, quick access to familiar functions and an interface designed around a controller. Xbox executive Jason Ronald has said Microsoft wants to simplify the handheld experience and make it feel more like a console, while acknowledging that Xbox software is built on a Windows foundation. The challenge is therefore to make Windows feel console-like without removing the flexibility that makes it a PC.

Microsoft and ASUS officially announced two devices in June 2025: the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. They are ASUS-made Windows 11 handheld PCs developed in collaboration with Xbox and Windows—not Microsoft-manufactured Xbox consoles.
Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog says the devices use an Xbox-oriented full-screen experience and aggregate access to games. The announcement also preserves Windows PC flexibility, including access to other storefronts and applications. Xbox Wire describes support for PC gaming features such as Discord and mods.

The official launch announcement is available through Xbox Wire. Calling the ROG Xbox Ally a “Microsoft Xbox handheld” obscures the strategy: Microsoft supplied the platform experience and Xbox integration, while ASUS supplied the hardware.
From Xbox full-screen experience to Xbox mode
Microsoft’s software response developed in stages:

Microsoft needed a better controller-first experience rather than simply placing the existing desktop on a smaller screen.
- The Xbox full-screen experience arrived on handhelds. It provided a direct, gaming-focused entry point and a more unified library.
- ASUS hardware became the showcase. The ROG Xbox Ally devices demonstrated the concept in a shipping product.
- The interface expanded beyond handhelds. Beginning April 30, 2026, Microsoft began rolling out Xbox mode to select Windows 11 PCs, including handhelds, laptops, desktops and tablets.
According to Xbox Wire, Xbox mode aggregates Xbox Game Pass titles and installed games from leading PC storefronts. It is an Xbox-oriented experience within Windows, not a new operating system that removes Windows’ desktop behavior.
Microsoft also described updates for ROG Xbox Ally devices and an Auto SR preview for ROG Xbox Ally X Insiders in its Windows Experience Blog. For developers, Microsoft documents handheld full-screen support in the Windows SDK, including the IsGamingFullScreenExperienceActive function and support associated with Windows SDK version 10.0.26100.3916 or later.
What SteamOS exposed
Valve’s SteamOS is an important pressure point for Microsoft because it set expectations for how a handheld PC should behave. On Steam Deck, the experience is built around a library-first interface, controller-friendly navigation, suspend and resume, and reduced desktop friction.

That does not mean SteamOS wins every performance or battery test. Results vary with the hardware, game, drivers, operating-system build, power limit and test method. Third-party testing has nevertheless shown meaningful differences between Windows and SteamOS on some comparable handheld configurations, including in battery life and performance for particular games. Those results should be read as examples, not universal laws.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The broader strategic lesson is more important than any single benchmark: Microsoft could not confidently sell a premium Xbox handheld while Windows remained visibly more cumbersome for handheld use. Improving the front end, power behavior and access to multiple libraries gives Microsoft a way to address that weakness across many devices.
What this means for Xbox games and Game Pass
The ASUS devices are Windows PCs with Xbox branding and software integration. They can access Xbox PC games and Game Pass alongside games from other PC storefronts. That flexibility is a major difference from a traditional console.
It also creates important limits. Not every Xbox console game has a native Windows PC version, and an Xbox console license does not automatically mean that every title runs natively on a Windows handheld. Cloud gaming depends on the relevant Game Pass plan, supported device, network quality and regional availability. Game Pass promotions and entitlements can also change, so buyers should check the current terms for their country at the time of purchase.
Microsoft’s launch announcement promoted access to hundreds of games for new Game Pass users through the applicable offer, but that offer should not be treated as a permanent entitlement. The current plan details are listed on the official Xbox Game Pass page.

Why Microsoft might prefer a partner-first strategy
Using ASUS as the first major hardware partner lowers Microsoft’s immediate risk. It can expand Xbox software and Game Pass to portable PCs without paying the full cost of designing, manufacturing, distributing and supporting another first-party device. Microsoft can also gather feedback from real users before deciding whether proprietary hardware is justified.
The approach may improve Windows gaming beyond handhelds as well. A better gamepad-oriented interface, faster access to libraries and smoother transitions between full-screen gaming and the desktop could benefit laptops, tablets and living-room PCs.
However, partner hardware reduces Microsoft’s control. ASUS, Lenovo and other manufacturers make their own decisions about screen technology, battery capacity, cooling, controls, storage, pricing and build quality. Different devices may deliver inconsistent experiences. Xbox branding on a Windows PC may also confuse buyers who expect the tightly integrated behavior of a conventional Xbox console.
There is a deeper contradiction too. Microsoft wants Xbox to be more open and available across devices, but openness brings multiple launchers, different compatibility layers, drivers and settings. The goal is not merely to put an Xbox logo on a Windows handheld; it is to make a fragmented PC ecosystem feel coherent without eliminating PC freedom.
What should buyers do now?
Buy an ROG Xbox Ally if you want:
- An official Xbox-oriented interface on a portable Windows PC.
- Xbox and Game Pass integration alongside access to multiple PC storefronts.
- Windows applications, mods and broader PC flexibility.
- A device that is available now rather than a rumored first-party product.
Accept that it remains a Windows PC. Xbox mode improves the front end, but it does not eliminate launcher behavior, driver issues, anti-cheat restrictions, updates or every compatibility problem.

Buy an ROG Xbox Ally X if you want:
The higher-end version of ASUS and Microsoft’s handheld approach, with a more premium hardware position. Check the current regional listing, price and stock through the official Microsoft Store product page; those details can change.
Choose a Steam Deck if you primarily want:
- A SteamOS-first, gaming-focused interface.
- A Steam library experience built around controller navigation.
- Less dependence on traditional Windows desktop management.
Steam Deck is a poorer fit for users who require native Windows applications, every PC storefront or seamless Xbox integration. Linux compatibility also varies by game.
Choose another Windows handheld if you prioritize:
A particular display, control layout, processor, battery, storage configuration or price. Such devices may suit specific needs better than the Xbox-branded models, but they retain many of the Windows handheld trade-offs that Xbox mode is intended to reduce. Official alternatives include the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go.
Wait for Microsoft’s own handheld if:
You specifically want first-party Xbox hardware and are comfortable waiting without a confirmed product, release date, price or specification. The reported pause makes that a speculative decision, not a scheduled purchase plan.
What remains unknown
Microsoft has not publicly announced a retail first-party Xbox handheld in the evidence available through August 18, 2026. It is therefore unknown whether the paused project will return, whether it would use Windows-derived software or a distinct Xbox operating system, and how it would differ from ASUS’s products.
There is also no confirmed first-party price, hardware specification, battery target, launch window or game-compatibility model. Xbox mode’s availability is expanding in select markets rather than being a guarantee of identical global access. Product availability, Game Pass benefits and cloud gaming support can vary by country.
The current verdict
Microsoft has not abandoned handheld gaming. It appears to have postponed its own hardware while making Windows a more credible foundation for Xbox-style portable play. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are the tangible result, and Xbox mode shows that the software work is expanding beyond handhelds.
For readers deciding what to buy, the distinction is straightforward: the first-party Microsoft handheld remains unconfirmed, while ASUS’s Xbox-branded Windows handhelds are real retail products. Microsoft’s strategy has shifted from “build an Xbox handheld first” to “make Xbox work across Windows handhelds first.”
