Microsoft’s latest Xbox price increase is already in effect. Announced on June 25, 2026, and applied worldwide from August 1, the change adds US$100 to 512GB models and US$150 to 1TB models. Microsoft is also sunsetting the 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black edition.

In the United States, reported new pricing puts the Xbox Series S at $499.99 and the disc-drive Xbox Series X at $799.99. Regional prices, retailer stock, bundles, and effective dates can differ.

Xbox prices in the United States

The following figures are reported U.S. pricing, rather than a complete worldwide price list. Microsoft’s official announcement confirms the size and scope of the increase, while the model-by-model U.S. prices were reported by VideoCardz.

Xbox Series S 512GB $399.99 $499.99 $100
Xbox Series S 1TB $449.99 $599.99 $150
Xbox Series X Digital 1TB $599.99 $749.99 $150
Xbox Series X 1TB with disc drive $649.99 $799.99 $150

Retail listings may temporarily show older prices, particularly when stores are selling inventory acquired before the increase. Bundles that include games or accessories are not directly comparable with bare-console prices. Check the exact model, storage capacity, included extras, and seller before buying.

When did the increase take effect?

Microsoft announced the change on June 25, 2026, and said the new pricing would begin August 1. The company described the adjustment as worldwide, but that does not mean every country received the same dollar-equivalent increase or the same effective date. The official announcement is available on the Xbox Wire.

As of August 18—and now that the August 1 date has passed—the increase is active. U.S. buyers should treat the figures above as the current reported price signal, not as a guarantee that every retailer’s live listing will match them.

Why is Microsoft raising Xbox prices?

Microsoft says the reason is a sharp increase in component costs. In its announcement, the company said storage and memory prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and that it expected another doubling by fall 2027. Microsoft also pointed to a broader consumer-electronics components crisis.

The company says consoles are especially exposed because they are commonly sold below manufacturing cost, with the wider business expected to earn revenue from games, subscriptions, and services. Those are Microsoft’s explanations; the announcement does not establish that any single factor, including demand from artificial-intelligence companies, solely caused the Xbox increase.

This is also being described by coverage as the third Xbox console price increase since May 2025. Microsoft’s June announcement itself refers to U.S. increases of $20 to $70 in the previous October. For additional context on the earlier changes, see Ars Technica’s report.

What happened to the 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X?

Microsoft says it is “sunsetting” the 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black model. That means the edition is being phased out, not recalled or suddenly rendered unsupported.

Existing owners are unaffected. Remaining retail inventory may continue selling until it runs out, but buyers should not assume that leftover units will receive a permanent discount. Nor is a future resale premium guaranteed: the model may interest collectors and people who want to avoid external storage, but its long-term value is uncertain.

Anyone specifically seeking the 2TB edition should verify the configuration and warranty rather than buying a similarly named Series X bundle. Microsoft’s current console lineup can be checked at Xbox.com.

How much more expensive is Xbox than at launch?

The reported current prices are substantially higher than the launch prices, although this is not an inflation-adjusted comparison and editions or storage configurations can differ.

  • The disc-drive Xbox Series X launched in November 2020 at $499.99. The reported current price is $799.99, or $300 more.
  • The Xbox Series S launched at $299.99. The reported current 512GB price is $499.99, or $200 more.

Those comparisons show how far the nominal prices have moved; they do not by themselves measure how the consoles’ value compares after inflation, changes in storage, or changes in the market.

Which Xbox should you buy?

Xbox Series S 512GB: the lowest-cost new option

At a reported $499.99, the 512GB Series S remains the least expensive new Xbox in the announced lineup. It is aimed at digital buyers and does not provide the Series X performance tier or a disc drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it if the upfront price matters most, you buy games digitally, and the console will be a secondary or family machine. Its storage is the main compromise. Game installations can consume much of the advertised capacity, leading to more uninstalling and reinstalling. Advertised storage should not be confused with the amount available for game installation.

Xbox One S, 1TB Console (Renewed)
  • Access your favorite entertainment through apps like YouTube, Netflix, and more
  • Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
  • Play with friends and family near and far—sitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
  • Xbox One games and accessories work together
  • Bring your games and movies to life with immersive audio through Dolby Atmos and DTS:X

Physical-game owners should not choose the Series S simply because it is the cheapest new model: it cannot use a disc library.

Xbox Series S 1TB: more room without moving to Series X

The reported $599.99 1TB Series S costs $100 more than the 512GB model. It remains digital-only and does not offer Series X performance, but the additional capacity can be worthwhile for buyers who expect to keep several large games installed.

It is the sensible Series S choice when the smaller model’s storage would be frustrating, but paying for Series X performance is unnecessary.

Xbox Series X Digital: only a small saving

The reported 1TB Series X Digital costs $749.99—just $50 below the disc-drive Series X. It retains the Series X hardware tier but cannot play physical discs.

That makes it a reasonable choice for a committed digital-only buyer who values the $50 saving. However, the gap is small. Buyers who own physical Xbox games, purchase used discs, borrow games, resell them, or want access to their existing library should generally regard the disc model’s flexibility as worth serious consideration.

Xbox Series X with disc drive: the flexible option

At a reported $799.99, the disc-drive Series X is the most expensive model in the current lineup, but it is also the least restrictive. It combines the strongest Xbox hardware tier with support for physical games, used purchases, lending, and resale.

  • 𝙁𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙡𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧: If the television screen remains black after switching it on, please try replacing the power adaptor first; if the screen remains black after replacing it, please contact us to have the TF card replaced.

For a buyer already committed to discs, the $50 premium over the Digital edition is easier to justify than paying for a digital model and later discovering that an existing physical library cannot be used.

How to pay less than the new MSRP

Look for legitimate remaining stock

Some retailers may still have pre-increase inventory. Compare the exact model and avoid assuming that an old listing is correct until the checkout price, warranty, and condition are clear. Be especially cautious with bundles, marketplace sellers, and listings that omit storage or disc-drive details.

Consider certified refurbished hardware

Microsoft says certified refurbished Xbox consoles may be available for up to $100 below MSRP. “Up to” is important: it is a maximum advertised discount, not a guaranteed saving on every model.

Check the precise storage configuration, included controller, cosmetic condition, warranty, and return policy. Inventory may be less consistent than new hardware. Microsoft’s refurbished Xbox destination is Microsoft Certified Refurbished.

Compare used or previously played consoles

Microsoft says it is working with retail partners on previously played-console programs, including trade-ins for cash or store credit. The available information does not establish a particular participating retailer, discount schedule, or guaranteed model availability.

For any used console, verify the seller’s reputation, return window, included accessories, storage size, disc-drive status, and warranty coverage. Cosmetic wear and shorter warranty protection can offset part of the saving.

Use financing only if the terms fit

Microsoft says eligible purchases through Microsoft Stores may qualify for short-term interest-free installments, while partners may offer 0% APR financing for up to 12 months. Approval, eligibility, third-party terms, and regional availability apply. Financing lowers the immediate payment, not the console’s total MSRP.

Should you buy an Xbox now or wait?

Buy now if you need an Xbox soon, find legitimate pre-increase stock at a trustworthy retailer, or specifically want remaining 2TB Galaxy Black inventory.

Wait if you are comfortable buying used or refurbished, expect retailer promotions, or are not committed to Xbox hardware. Microsoft’s forecast of further memory-cost increases is not a guarantee of another console price increase, so it is not a reason by itself to panic-buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the Digital and disc models carefully. At the reported U.S. prices, the $50 difference between the Series X Digital and disc editions is unusually narrow relative to the practical features lost when choosing digital-only. The disc model is the safer choice for physical-game owners; the Digital edition makes more sense only when the buyer is certain discs will never matter.

Before paying full price, compare the new console against certified refurbished and used options, and factor in storage, physical media, warranty coverage, and the games you actually intend to play. Xbox’s official hardware lineup is listed at Xbox.com.
