Yes—Microsoft has relicensed the source code for Zork I, Zork II and Zork III under the MIT License. That lets people use, modify and redistribute the covered code under the license’s conditions. It does not make every part of the games free to reuse: trademarks, branding, commercial packaging, marketing materials and other assets are excluded.
What Microsoft made available
On November 20, 2025, Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office, Team Xbox and Activision announced that source code for the three classic Infocom games was available under the MIT License. Microsoft says it submitted pull requests to the historical source repositories to add the license and document the grant, rather than creating new repositories. The announcement is at Microsoft’s Open Source Blog.

The release concerns specified source code and accompanying documentation—not an unrestricted release of every element of the commercial games. Microsoft says the grant excludes commercial packaging and marketing materials, grants no rights to trademarks or brands, and does not cover assets outside the titles’ source code.
What the MIT License lets you do
The license permits use, copying, modification, merging, publication, distribution, sublicensing and sale of copies of the covered code. The condition is that copies or substantial portions must include the copyright and permission notice. The license also provides the standard “AS IS” warranty disclaimer. The cited Zork III repository’s LICENSE file includes a 2025 Microsoft copyright notice.

In practical terms, the license is permission to work with the code; it is not permission to market a product using Zork names or logos, reproduce excluded assets, or treat the original packaging as freely reusable. Check the license file in the particular repository and the terms applicable to any material you plan to use.
Why the games were split into three parts
Microsoft describes the original Zork as a text-based game whose mainframe version was too large for early home computers. Infocom split it into Zork I, Zork II and Zork III, using the Z-Machine virtual-machine specification so story files could be interpreted on different computers. The release puts historically significant code into a form students, teachers and developers can study and adapt, while leaving the stated asset and branding exclusions intact.

Microsoft OSPO director Stacey Haffner said: “Our goal is simple: to place historically important code in the hands of students, teachers, and developers so they can study it, learn from it, and, perhaps most importantly, play it.” The announcement also credits Jason Scott and the Internet Archive for decades of stewardship and partnership. The historical source repositories collect archival source code and list Zork among their projects.
Is Zork free to play now?
The MIT release makes the specified source code freely available under its license, but that is different from making every packaged game edition free. Microsoft says the packaged Zork Anthology remains commercially available on GOG. The announcement does not provide a current price comparison or establish that every reader can obtain the anthology in every region or on every platform.

There are two practical routes, depending on whether you want to play a packaged edition or work from source:
| Route | Best suited to | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged Zork Anthology on GOG | Players who want a commercially packaged option | Microsoft identifies it as available on GOG; check the store for current availability and terms. |
| Source code plus Z-Machine tools | Readers who want to study, compile or modify the covered code | Requires the relevant source and tools, including a compiler/assembler workflow and a Z-Machine interpreter. Follow the tools’ current instructions. |
How the source-based route works
Microsoft outlines a command-line workflow using ZILF to compile zork1.zil, then zapf to assemble a runnable Z-Machine file. That output can be opened in an interpreter such as ZLR. Microsoft also mentions Windows Frotz and other Z-Machine runners. These are suggested tools, not a guarantee of identical setup steps or compatibility across current systems; consult each project’s instructions for installation and commands.

- Compile the relevant
.zilsource, such aszork1.zil, then usezapfto assemble the resulting Z-Machine file as described by Microsoft. - Open the resulting file with a compatible interpreter such as ZLR or Windows Frotz, using that interpreter’s instructions.
Microsoft’s announcement describes this workflow but does not provide a current platform-compatibility matrix or guarantee that a specific set of commands will work unchanged on every machine.
Quick Recap
What the release does not establish
- It does not grant rights to Zork trademarks, brands, commercial packaging or marketing materials.
- It does not say that every asset outside the titles’ source code is covered by the MIT License.
- It does not make a claim about current GOG pricing or universal regional availability.
- It does not establish that the named development tools or interpreters are paid products or are offered through a partner program.
