A May 30, 2025 report said Microsoft had shifted priority from its own planned Xbox handheld to improving Windows for third-party gaming handhelds. That was a reported delay or deprioritization, not a confirmed cancellation. Microsoft and ASUS later launched the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X on October 16, 2025. Those are ASUS-made Windows handhelds developed with Xbox—not a Microsoft-built Xbox console. The cited official announcements do not confirm that Microsoft has released or definitively canceled a first-party handheld.
What the May 2025 report said
Thurrott reported on May 30, 2025, relaying Windows Central reporter Jez Corden’s account that Microsoft had moved resources toward improving Windows 11 for gaming handhelds made by third-party manufacturers. The immediate focus reportedly included ASUS’s Project Kennan. Microsoft’s own handheld was described as taking a back seat, while the report left open the possibility of a native Xbox device later. Thurrott’s report did not establish a cancellation, public launch plan, final specifications, or confirmed release date.
“Native Xbox handheld” in this context means a rumored Microsoft-designed device intended to feel more like an Xbox product than a conventional Windows gaming PC. The report’s interpretation suggested a broader Xbox software experience, but the operating system and ability to run Xbox console games natively were not officially confirmed. It is a separate idea from the ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X that predated the Xbox collaboration, from the later ROG Xbox Ally models, and from a future Xbox console generation.
Why Windows handhelds became the near-term focus
Windows runs on a broad range of PC hardware and supports many storefronts, but it was designed as a general-purpose desktop operating system. On a small, controller-first handheld, desktop menus, launcher sign-ins, updates, drivers, overlays, and background tasks can add friction. The May report framed improving this experience as a way to address handheld users across multiple OEMs rather than waiting for one Microsoft-built device.

SteamOS sharpened the competition by offering a gaming-focused, controller-friendly interface on Steam Deck. That does not make it universally better: Windows generally offers broader direct access to PC storefronts and the Xbox PC ecosystem, while SteamOS puts Steam at the center and may require desktop mode or workarounds for other launchers. Game compatibility, performance, battery life, and setup depend on the particular device, game, software version, and power settings; neither operating system wins every comparison.
From the ASUS collaboration to the ROG Xbox Ally
Microsoft officially announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X with ASUS on June 8, 2025, describing them as handhelds combining Xbox features with Windows flexibility. The announcement followed reporting that identified ASUS’s Xbox-branded handheld as the near-term priority. The chronology makes the Ally line the practical outcome of that partner-hardware strategy, but the official announcement does not itself establish that the reported codename Project Kennan was the final product’s official identity. Microsoft’s announcement
The two devices launched worldwide on October 16, 2025, initially across 45 countries, with additional markets to follow and availability varying by region and retailer. Microsoft’s launch announcement confirmed the release; it did not announce a Microsoft-built handheld.
What the ROG Xbox Ally is—and is not
The ROG Xbox Ally is ASUS hardware running Windows 11 Home, with Xbox software and features designed to make handheld play more convenient. Its Xbox full-screen experience, Xbox button, and handheld-optimized Game Bar provide a controller-friendly front end. The library experience can bring together supported games from Xbox and other PC storefronts, but aggregation does not remove the need for separate accounts, launcher updates, DRM, or troubleshooting.

ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X: the main differences
The following specifications are advertised on Xbox’s product page. The U.S. estimated retail prices were $599.99 for the Ally and $999.99 for the Ally X in official Xbox material; retailer prices and availability can differ.
| Model | RAM | Storage | Battery | U.S. estimated retail price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ROG Xbox Ally | 16GB | 512GB | 60Wh | $599.99 | Buyers who want the Xbox handheld experience at the lower price and are comfortable adjusting settings for demanding games. |
| ROG Xbox Ally X | 24GB | 1TB | 80Wh | $999.99 | Buyers who value more memory, storage, and battery capacity and accept a substantial price premium. |
Both models use Windows 11 Home and have a seven-inch, 1080p, 120Hz display. The Ally X’s additional memory and larger battery may suit more demanding use, but do not guarantee a proportional frame-rate increase: results depend on the game, resolution, power mode, thermals, and software support. The product page also advertises three months of Xbox Game Pass Premium with purchase, subject to eligibility, activation, regional availability, and plan terms; it should not be assumed to be an unrestricted or recurring benefit.
How Windows and SteamOS trade off on handhelds
| Consideration | Windows handhelds | SteamOS handhelds |
|---|---|---|
| Storefronts | Broad access, including the Xbox app and many third-party PC stores; games and launchers may still need separate setup. | Steam is the native priority; other launchers can require workarounds or desktop mode. |
| Controller-first use | Historically more desktop-oriented; Xbox full-screen features and OEM software aim to reduce that friction. | Designed around a game-focused interface, particularly on Steam Deck. |
| Compatibility | Broad Windows game support, subject to title, launcher, and anti-cheat issues. | Proton compatibility varies by game and can require Linux-specific troubleshooting. |
| Xbox services | Native access to the Xbox PC app and relevant Game Pass, Cloud Gaming, and Remote Play features, where supported. | Xbox PC services are not native in the same way; cloud and remote-play options may be available through other means. |
| Hardware choice | Many manufacturers and configurations. | Steam Deck is the best-known official option; support beyond Valve hardware is developing and device-dependent. |
Steam Deck OLED is a natural alternative for buyers who primarily want a SteamOS-centered experience; Xbox PC and Game Pass functionality is not its native focus. Windows models from ASUS or Lenovo may better suit users who need particular launchers, software, or hardware layouts. These choices do not establish that one platform is faster or has better battery life in every game. Steam Deck OLED · ASUS ROG Ally X · Lenovo Legion Go family

What remains unconfirmed about a first-party Xbox handheld
The reported reprioritization and the later ASUS collaboration do not settle whether Microsoft will eventually release hardware it builds itself. In the cited official announcements, Microsoft has not confirmed a first-party handheld’s release, specifications, price, operating system, or availability. Nor do they establish whether such a device would run a console-derived Xbox system or an evolved Windows-and-Xbox platform, or whether it would natively support the full Xbox console library.
Any specific future release timing—including a date reported by outside coverage—should be treated as reporting or expectation, not an official Microsoft commitment. The Ally launch proves that Xbox-branded partner hardware reached stores; it does not prove that it replaced, or guarantees, a Microsoft-built device.
Should you buy a handheld now or wait?
Consider the ROG Xbox Ally if
- You want Windows PC gaming alongside an Xbox-oriented interface, with access to supported Xbox services and other PC storefronts.
- You expect to use Game Pass, Cloud Gaming, or Remote Play and have the plan, region, console, and network conditions those features require.
- You are comfortable with PC-style setup and the possibility that individual games need launcher, control, or performance adjustments.
Consider the Ally X if
- You specifically value its 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, and 80Wh battery enough to justify the higher U.S. estimated retail price.
- You want more capacity for demanding PC games but understand that hardware advantages do not produce identical gains in every title.
Consider waiting if
- Your priority is a Microsoft-designed device with a potentially more console-like Xbox operating experience.
- You are willing to wait without a confirmed launch date, specifications, or assurance that a first-party product will reach market.
Consider Steam Deck or another Windows handheld if
- Choose Steam Deck OLED if a SteamOS-first, controller-focused experience matters more than native Xbox PC integration.
- Compare other Windows handhelds if you want PC flexibility but do not need the Xbox-branded interface; hardware, ergonomics, performance, and support differ by model.
Cloud features require supported devices and regions, qualifying access, and suitable internet; libraries and benefits can change. A multi-storefront interface also cannot guarantee that every game works well on a handheld, supports its controls, or avoids launcher and anti-cheat problems. Xbox’s product page and terms
