Microsoft’s refreshed Xbox Cloud Gaming website is a public preview, not a confirmed replacement for the existing experience. It brings updated navigation, a new visual design and a revised product flow; Microsoft has not said that the redesign itself improves streaming quality or makes more games available. You can try it through xbox.com/play or play.xbox.com, if the preview is available to your account.
What Microsoft is changing
Announced on January 26, 2026, the refresh applies to the web experience for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft describes it as a new interface with updated navigation, a refreshed look and a new product flow, built as a foundation for future experiences. It is not an announcement that the Xbox console dashboard, Xbox PC app, mobile apps, TV apps or Remote Play have received the same redesign. Microsoft’s announcement calls the experience a public preview and says it will continue to change as players test it.
Microsoft’s announcement does not establish a universal launch date or confirm that the preview has become the default for every player. As of August 18, 2026, the safest description is still a public-preview pathway; access and features may depend on account, region, device and browser. Reporting by Windows Central characterized the navigation as console-like, but Microsoft has not published a final design specification or definitive feature list.
How to try the preview
- Open xbox.com/play in a supported browser and sign in to the Xbox account you use for cloud gaming.
- Open Settings and turn on Preview Features.
- Follow the prompt or link to open the refreshed experience. Microsoft says it can take up to 10 minutes for the links to appear; signing out and back in may make them appear sooner.
- If you prefer, enter play.xbox.com directly in your browser.
If you want to return to the previous web experience, go back to xbox.com/play. The preview may have missing functions or behave differently from the existing site, which Microsoft explicitly warns users to expect.

What changes—and what remains unproven
The confirmed changes are navigation, appearance and the flow through the web product. The goal is to make the web experience more flexible for future Xbox Cloud Gaming features. That may make browsing or launching games feel more straightforward, but no controlled usability results or final feature inventory have been published in the announcement.
The refresh is not evidence of a streaming-performance upgrade. Microsoft has not tied it to better resolution, frame rate, bitrate, latency, audio, server capacity, queue times or connection stability. Treat it as an interface and product-flow preview, not a new streaming tier. Xbox separately advertises up to 1440p for supported titles and devices with Game Pass Ultimate; that is a plan benefit with hardware and game qualifications, not a guarantee for every stream. Check Microsoft’s plan comparison for the current details.

Access, plans and game availability
Game Pass Ultimate is not the only possible route to cloud gaming. Microsoft’s current pages describe cloud benefits across multiple Game Pass plans, and supported free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. The catalog and entitlement depend on plan, region, platform and title. The comparison below summarizes the distinctions established by Microsoft’s current plan information; check the live page for the offer and eligibility in your region.
| Option | What Microsoft says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free Microsoft account | Can play supported free-to-play games. | Only supported titles and regions; see the Xbox Cloud Gaming page. |
| Game Pass Essential | Cloud-streaming benefits are shown on Microsoft’s cloud-gaming page. | Check the live regional comparison for the specific entitlement and catalog. |
| Game Pass Premium | Cloud gaming with shorter wait times. | Microsoft does not advertise the same top streaming-quality tier as Ultimate. |
| Game Pass Ultimate | Best advertised streaming quality, including up to 1440p on supported titles and devices, and the shortest wait times. | Neither 1440p nor the shortest wait is guaranteed for every game, device, region or session. |
Microsoft also supports streaming select games a player owns, but that does not mean every digitally purchased Xbox game is streamable. The web refresh does not unlock an entire purchased library. Catalog and owned-game availability can change; consult the cloud-gaming page and the plan comparison for current eligibility. Microsoft’s retrieved plan pages do not establish stable regional prices here, so use the live comparison rather than relying on an unverified figure.

Devices, browsers, controls and connection
Microsoft lists cloud gaming across Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, select Samsung and LG smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV and select Meta Quest headsets. Web play is available through supported browsers including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari. Support varies by device model, region and platform; the preview’s web redesign does not mean every listed device receives an identical interface. See the official Xbox Cloud Gaming guidance for current device details.
- Controller: A compatible controller connected over Bluetooth or USB is the general option. Only selected games support Xbox touch controls, so a touchscreen alone is not enough for every title.
- Internet: Microsoft gives 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum guideline and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. It recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These figures are guidance, not a promise of low latency or a stable picture.
- Other factors: Wi-Fi congestion, signal quality, latency and jitter, household traffic, device and browser performance, and distance from a cloud region can affect the stream even when a speed test meets the guideline.
Should you use the preview?
It is most useful for people who already play through xbox.com/play and want to explore the revised navigation or help shape the web product. Players who browse across devices or find game discovery cumbersome may want to see whether the new flow suits them. Microsoft provides feedback links inside the preview, making it possible to report issues rather than assume every difference is final.

If you rely on the current interface for regular play, need a feature that may not have carried over, or would rather avoid preview bugs, staying with the existing experience is reasonable. The trade-off is potential improvements to organization and discovery in exchange for incomplete or changing behavior and uncertain access. The redesign alone is not a reason to subscribe, buy a controller or upgrade a network; those choices should depend on the games you want to play and your existing setup.

The toggle or launch link is missing
First confirm that you are signed into the intended Xbox account at xbox.com/play, then refresh and check Settings again. Allow up to 10 minutes for the prompt to appear; sign out and back in as Microsoft suggests. If it remains unavailable, try Edge, Chrome or Safari, or open play.xbox.com directly. Missing access may reflect rollout, account or regional eligibility, browser support or a temporary service issue; the announcement does not promise access for every account.

A game is absent from the catalog
The web redesign does not make every Game Pass or owned game cloud-playable. Check whether that particular title is supported for cloud play under your plan and in your region. Owned-game streaming covers select titles only, according to Microsoft’s cloud-gaming information.
Queues remain long or the stream looks poor
The preview announcement makes no claim that the redesign changes server capacity or queue priority. Microsoft advertises shorter wait times on higher tiers, but actual waits can still vary. For poor picture or responsiveness, check Wi-Fi congestion and signal, try a 5 GHz network when available, reduce competing network traffic, and consider device or browser limitations. Meeting Microsoft’s speed guideline does not by itself guarantee good quality.
Touch controls are unavailable or the new site behaves differently
Touch controls appear only in selected games. Different or missing features in the web interface may also be a preview limitation, as Microsoft says some functions may not yet be available or may behave differently. Use the preview’s feedback route: select the profile icon in the upper-right and choose Give Feedback, or open the Xbox Web Guide with the Xbox controller button or the Xbox icon in the upper-left and choose Give Feedback. To stop using the preview, return to xbox.com/play.
Why the web experience matters
A browser interface gives Xbox a route to cloud play across supported PCs, phones, tablets and partner devices without requiring the same native app everywhere. Microsoft has described cloud gaming as available through browsers and a widening range of partner devices in its developer overview. That broader strategy does not mean all devices, regions or titles have identical support; the preview is a focused web refresh within a wider, still-variable service.
