Microsoft Rewards No Longer Offers Direct Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Redemptions—Here’s the Gift-Card Workaround

As of August 18, 2026, Microsoft Rewards does not normally let you exchange points directly for an Xbox Game Pass subscription. Microsoft reportedly ended direct subscription redemptions on October 1, 2025, and current Xbox terms say Rewards points can be used for eligible Microsoft Store purchases but exclude subscriptions. In markets where an Xbox or Microsoft gift-card reward is available, you can still convert points into account credit and apply that balance toward Game Pass.

What changed with Game Pass Rewards redemptions?

Direct Rewards-point exchanges for Game Pass subscriptions were discontinued beginning October 1, 2025, according to contemporary reporting from TrueAchievements. Microsoft’s current Xbox terms support the practical result: Rewards points may fund eligible single-item Microsoft Store purchases, but subscriptions are excluded.

This applies as a policy principle rather than proving that every country or account lost an identical offer on the same day. Rewards catalogs are market- and account-specific, and historical auto-redemption options covered products including Ultimate, Core and PC Game Pass. The current terms do not guarantee a direct option for any other tier.

Can Rewards points still pay for Game Pass?

Sometimes, indirectly. Microsoft’s support guidance says redeemed Microsoft and Xbox gift cards are deposited into your Microsoft account balance. You can then use that balance as a payment source for an eligible Game Pass purchase, subject to the account’s billing setup.

1. Open the Microsoft Rewards dashboard while signed in to the Microsoft account that owns your Xbox subscription.
2. Confirm that your account region and physical location match.
3. Search the catalog for an Xbox or Microsoft gift-card reward and review its denomination, point cost and restrictions.
4. Redeem the card only in your home market, completing any required phone or QR verification.
5. Check that the credit appears in your Microsoft account balance.
6. Open the Game Pass Ultimate purchase page, select the plan and review the payment source before confirming.
7. Visit account.microsoft.com/services to check the renewal date, recurring-billing setting and payment method. Turn off recurring billing if you intend to buy only the current cycle.

Does this make Game Pass completely free?

Only in a limited economic sense. If you earn enough points to obtain sufficient gift-card credit, that credit can cover some or all of a subscription charge. The U.S. Ultimate listing displayed $22.99 per month on August 18, 2026 and states that the subscription continues automatically unless canceled. That is a date-specific U.S. price, not a permanent worldwide rate. A balance-funded purchase can therefore lead to a later charge if recurring billing remains enabled.

Why is the reward missing from my account?

A missing tile does not by itself prove a worldwide permanent removal. Microsoft says offers vary by country, market and account, and that gift cards can be temporarily unavailable without a published restock schedule.

Rewards with Xbox also advertises enhanced earning for existing Ultimate members, including exclusive quests, up to four times more points than the applicable baseline and up to 10% back on selected Game Pass library purchases. These are benefits of having Ultimate; they are not a way to redeem points directly for Ultimate.

Which payment route makes sense?

Do not assume the gift-card route is always cheaper than paying cash. A fixed “points per month” calculation becomes unreliable when Microsoft changes Game Pass prices or redemption values.

• Verify your account’s home market and sign-in identity.
• Confirm the gift-card denomination can cover the intended charge or understand the remaining balance.
• Check whether an existing Game Pass subscription is already active and note its renewal date.
