PlayStation Portal’s PS Plus cloud-streaming feature officially launched on November 5, 2025. It can run selected PS5 games from Sony’s servers without a PS5 connection, but it does not replace Remote Play. Remote Play remains the way to access compatible games installed on your own PS5, while Cloud Streaming is limited to supported titles, regions, accounts and a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
Portal now has two different ways to play
“Mirroring” is a common shorthand for Portal’s original function, but Sony calls that feature Remote Play. Cloud Streaming is a separate service with different requirements.

Sony’s launch announcement retains separate Remote Play, Cloud Streaming and Search areas in Portal’s interface, confirming that cloud access supplements rather than removes Remote Play. Sony’s announcement also states that PS Plus is not required for ordinary Remote Play.
What happened to the beta?
- November 19, 2024: Sony announced Cloud Streaming (Beta) for PS Portal, initially for selected PS5 games available to PlayStation Plus Premium members. Original announcement
- April 9, 2025: A beta-focused update added interface refinements such as sorting and gameplay-capture support. Update details
- November 5, 2025: Sony ended the test and launched Cloud Streaming officially, adding selected digital PS5 games owned through a user’s PlayStation Store library. Launch details
As of Sony’s support documentation updated August 18, 2026, this is an active service, not a beta. Older articles saying Portal cloud streaming is merely being tested are describing the 2024 announcement.

Which games can Portal stream?
Sony identifies three sources of eligible games:
- Selected titles in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog.
- Selected titles in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog.
- Selected digital PS5 games in your PlayStation Store library.
Sony’s examples include Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök and Hogwarts Legacy. The live catalog changes by country, subscription plan and time; check Sony’s current cloud-streaming list or the titles shown on Portal.
- Digital ownership does not automatically make a game streamable.
- Physical PS5 discs do not create cloud entitlements.
- A game may support download or Remote Play without supporting Cloud Streaming.
- Premium does not make every Game Catalog title streamable.
Do you need a PS5?
Not for an eligible Cloud Streaming session. Sony says Portal can stream supported games while your PS5 is powered off or being used by another account. That makes Portal useful to someone without a console, or to a household where the PS5 is occupied.
A PS5 is still required for Remote Play. Cloud Streaming also is not local handheld gaming: Portal does not download and run PS5 games natively, and it cannot provide the complete PS5 catalog without a console.

PS Plus Premium is mandatory for cloud streaming
Portal Cloud Streaming requires PlayStation Plus Premium in supported markets. Essential and Extra do not include this entitlement. Sony’s US page showed these prices on August 18, 2026:

These are recurring subscription prices and Sony can change them. Verify the live PlayStation Plus page before buying. Premium is unnecessary if you only want Remote Play from a PS5.
Where is the feature available?
Sony’s current US support page lists availability in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. The list can change, and countries using PlayStation Plus Deluxe should not be assumed to have identical cloud support.

Cloud Streaming is restricted to adult accounts. Child accounts cannot use it, even if the device and subscription are otherwise eligible. See Sony’s support requirements.

Sony lists these minimum download speeds for Portal Cloud Streaming:

- 7 Mbps for 720p streaming.
- 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming.
Those figures are thresholds, not a promise of smooth play. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, router load, ISP routing and distance from Sony’s servers all matter. A fast but unstable connection can still produce input delay, image-quality drops or disconnects. Public Wi-Fi may meet the speed test and still perform poorly.

How to start a cloud-streaming session
- Install the latest Portal system software.
- Sign in with an adult PlayStation Network account.
- Buy or manage PlayStation Plus Premium on the PlayStation website, PS5 or PlayStation App; Portal does not manage subscriptions directly.
- Connect Portal to a supported broadband Wi-Fi network.
- Use the L1/R1 controls to switch among the Remote Play, Cloud Streaming and Search areas.
- Open Cloud Streaming or Search and choose a game marked as eligible.
- Start the stream.
Sony documents the interface and subscription-management limits on its Portal support page.
What to do when Cloud Streaming is unavailable
- No Cloud Streaming tab: Check the country, account age and Premium status.
- A game is missing: It may be unsupported, removed from a catalog or ineligible from your library.
- Poor picture or lag: Move closer to the router, reduce local traffic, try a stronger network and check for packet loss.
- A session will not start: Confirm Premium is active and the title remains supported; Sony-side or game-specific outages can also cause failures.
- You need your whole PS5 library: Pair Portal with the console and use Remote Play.
- You cannot subscribe on Portal: Use the PlayStation website, PS5 or PlayStation App.
Who should buy Portal for this feature?
If you already own a PS5
Portal plus Remote Play may be all you need. Add Premium only if its cloud catalog, selected library titles or ability to play while the console is occupied justify the recurring cost.
If you do not own a PS5
Portal and Premium can provide access to selected games, but they are not a complete PS5 replacement. You remain dependent on Sony’s supported catalog, adult-account rules, regional availability and streaming quality.
If you want unrestricted or offline handheld play
Portal is the wrong product category. It is a streaming device, not a handheld that installs games locally. Sony’s official hardware page is here; check the live price before purchase.
Verdict
Cloud Streaming makes PlayStation Portal more independent: eligible games can now be played without a PS5 connection, and the feature has been official since November 5, 2025. But it does not make Remote Play obsolete. Remote Play remains the broader route to games installed on your own PS5, while Cloud Streaming trades that flexibility for server access, a Premium subscription and a narrower, changing catalog.
