Microsoft has framed its next Xbox generation as a “family of devices,” but that wording does not confirm a specific console-and-handheld lineup. A report published by GamesRadar+ on August 29, 2026, links the phrase to Project Helix, yet does not identify a definitive list of products, specifications, prices or release dates. The existing ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is a useful handheld comparison, not a confirmed Project Helix device.
Does Microsoft mean the next Xbox will include a console and a handheld?
That is possible, but it is not established. The “family of devices” language describes Microsoft’s broad next-generation framing; it does not, on its own, announce a first-party handheld or confirm how many products will launch.

The August 29, 2026 GamesRadar+ report attributes the framing to Xbox executive Asha Sharma and connects it with Project Helix. It reports that Microsoft is working on a next generation, but does not provide a definitive device list or detailed product specifications. Until Microsoft identifies individual products, “console and handheld” should be treated as a question about the shape of the strategy—not a confirmed lineup.
What could a family of Xbox devices mean for players?
It could mean more than one kind of hardware serving different ways to play, such as a living-room console and a portable device. But the phrase alone does not tell players whether those devices would share a game library, storefront, controls, save system or compatibility guarantees. Microsoft’s developer guidance explains how support can work across console generations and device families; it is technical documentation, not a consumer promise that every future device will share every game or save.

Microsoft has used similar family language before. In a June 13, 2016 announcement, it described the Xbox One family as including more than one device and said games and accessories would work across that family. That precedent shows the term can describe a range of hardware, but it does not predict Project Helix’s devices or establish their compatibility.
How does the existing ROG Xbox Ally compare with the idea of a future handheld?
The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally gives players a real-world example of Xbox-branded portable gaming hardware today. Microsoft and ASUS have worked together on the handheld, making it relevant context for anyone considering portable play alongside a living-room console. A 2025 Tom’s Guide report discusses the Microsoft, AMD, Windows and ASUS handheld context.

It is still a separate, existing product—not evidence that Microsoft has confirmed a Project Helix handheld. The distinction matters: an Xbox brand on a current portable device does not establish that it belongs to the next Xbox generation or that future hardware will share its design or platform details.

What remains unknown about the next Xbox family?
The cited reporting does not establish which devices Microsoft will make, whether it will offer a first-party handheld, or whether additional hardware partners will participate. It also leaves the practical buying questions unanswered:
