microsoft.vsa.vb.codedomprocessor.dll errors usually point to a damaged or missing legacy .NET Framework component, not a missing Windows System32 file. The safest fix is to restore .NET Framework 3.5, then repair the application that produces the message instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
Microsoft.Vsa.Vb.CodeDOMProcessor.dll is a managed Microsoft .NET Framework assembly in the Microsoft.Vsa.Vb.CodeDOM namespace. It defines a legacy CodeDOM processor used by older Visual Studio and .NET application components.

The assembly can also be installed in the .NET Global Assembly Cache, including a GAC_MSIL location. The exact path depends on the Windows version, .NET servicing state, and the application that requested it.
The most important point is that this is a framework assembly. Windows or an old application may be looking for a particular strong-named, serviced copy. A loose replacement with the same filename is not necessarily an equivalent file.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The program cannot start because the DLL is missing | .NET Framework 2.0/3.5 is disabled, damaged, or incomplete | Enable or repair .NET Framework 3.5 |
| The error appeared after reinstalling Windows | Optional .NET components were not restored | Enable .NET Framework 3.5, then run DISM and SFC |
| Error 1935 mentions the assembly during setup | .NET installation or Windows component-store failure | Repair Windows components, then rerun setup |
| Only one old game or application fails | That application’s installation is incomplete | Repair, verify, or reinstall the parent program |
| The file disappeared after antivirus activity | The file may have been quarantined | Check Protection history |
| It started after a Windows upgrade or cleanup utility | GAC or component references may be inconsistent | Repair .NET and system files |
| “The specified module could not be found” appears | A dependency or framework component may be missing | Identify the calling executable and repair .NET |
| A registry cleaner reports a missing shared DLL | The registry entry may be stale | Do not restore the DLL based only on that warning |
Before changing anything, record the complete error and the executable that displays it. A message from an old installer, game launcher, SQL-related component, or business application requires a different final repair than a message from Windows servicing.
Fix 1: Enable .NET Framework 3.5
.NET Framework 3.5 includes .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0. It also supports applications targeting .NET Framework versions 1.0 through 3.5, making it the most useful first repair for this assembly.
Using Windows Features
- Press
Windowsand search for Turn Windows features on or off. - Open the result.
- Expand .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Select the feature and its child options if Windows presents them.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to download or install the required files.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Launch the affected application again.
If the application starts normally, the framework layer was the problem. You do not need to copy a separate DLL into the application directory.
.NET Framework 4.x does not automatically replace the older 2.0–3.5 layer. Installing or updating .NET Framework 4.x alone therefore may not restore this assembly.
Microsoft’s installation guidance is available in its official .NET Framework 3.5 documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsing DISM
If Windows Features fails, or if you prefer an administrator command, open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press
Windows. - Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All
Wait for DISM to reach completion. Restart Windows and test the application.
If DISM says that the source files could not be found, use matching Windows installation media. Mount the Windows ISO or insert the installation drive, note its drive letter, and run the following command with the correct letter:
DISM.exe /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:D:sourcessxs
Replace D: with the actual media drive. The installation media must match the installed Windows release closely enough for the component files to be accepted. Microsoft documents this process in its DISM deployment instructions for .NET Framework 3.5.

Repairing this manually means finding compatible media and interpreting DISM error codes. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention, while its repair actions require the full version; it is optional, and enabling the correct Windows feature remains the direct fix for this .NET assembly.
Fix 2: Repair the Windows component store and protected files
If .NET Framework 3.5 is already enabled, the component store or protected system files may be damaged. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because SFC may need a healthy component store as its repair source.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Without closing the administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program again.
A successful DISM operation may report that the restore operation completed successfully. SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupt files, or that no integrity violations were found.
If DISM fails, write down the exact error code. Recheck the Windows Update connection, use matching installation media as a source, and make sure the command prompt has administrator rights. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run the checks again after DISM completes.
Microsoft’s full procedure is in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application
This file may be restored by the application that originally installed or referenced it. If only one program reports the error, repair that program after repairing .NET.

For example, Epic Games provides Library, the three-dot menu beside the game, Manage, and Verify. Verification replaces damaged application files without treating a random DLL download as a repair.
If reinstalling the parent application restores the file and the program launches, the application installation was incomplete or damaged. If the installer fails again with Error 1935, return to the .NET and component-store repairs rather than copying the DLL manually.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a framework or application file. Do not immediately disable protection or restore a file simply because its name looks familiar.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry that refers to the affected application or assembly.
- Check the reported file path.
- Restore or allow it only if the location, parent application, and digital signature are trusted.
- If the entry is suspicious, leave it quarantined.
- Reinstall the application from its official installer and run a complete malware scan.
A file under the expected .NET Framework or trusted application path is different from an identically named file in a temporary download directory. Microsoft explains the available actions in Protection history in Windows Security.

If antivirus removed the file repeatedly after reinstalling, do not create a permanent exclusion without understanding why. The application installer or its files may need verification.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the error began immediately after a Windows upgrade, driver installation, registry-cleaner run, application removal, or other system change, System Restore may return the framework registrations and component state to an earlier point.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, or updates. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 6: Update or repair drivers only when the parent application needs them
This is not a graphics-driver DLL. Reinstalling a GPU, chipset, or sound driver is a low-priority step unless the affected application independently reports a driver problem or crashes for another reason.

For a clean vendor reinstall, download the driver only from the hardware manufacturer or your PC maker, select the correct Windows version and device, and follow its installer instructions.
Manually checking every device and matching driver package can take time, especially after a Windows reinstall. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; a driver tool will not replace the definitive repair of the application or .NET component.
Version and architecture notes
Do not choose a “32-bit DLL” or “64-bit DLL” from a download page based only on the Windows edition.
Windows servicing records identify this assembly as MSIL, and public servicing tables list the same file for x86 and x64 records. That means it is not an ordinary native x86-only or x64-only runtime library. The correct .NET Framework feature, assembly identity, and servicing state matter more than selecting a loose architecture variant.
Historical Microsoft records contain several assembly and file-version families, including 7.0.3300.0, 7.0.5000.0, 8.0.0.0, and serviced file versions beginning with 8.0.50727. Those records are historical servicing information, not a universal download list. The file size and exact version on a working system can vary with the .NET Framework release and installed updates.
Very old software may target .NET Framework 1.0 or 1.1. .NET Framework 3.5 supports applications targeting 1.0 through 3.5, so it is the preferred compatibility layer to try first. Do not install the old .NET Framework 1.1 redistributable blindly on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Use it only when the application specifically requires it and its operating-system compatibility has been verified against Microsoft’s legacy .NET Framework documentation.

regsvr32 registers self-registering COM and OLE components by calling an exported DllRegisterServer function. A managed .NET Framework assembly is normally loaded through the .NET runtime and installed or serviced through framework mechanisms such as Windows Features, Windows Installer, or the Global Assembly Cache.

Running a command such as this is therefore generally irrelevant:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

regsvr32 Microsoft.Vsa.Vb.CodeDOMProcessor.dll
It may produce an error because the managed assembly does not expose the native registration entry point. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation explains why this happens.
Likewise, do not use gacutil as a consumer repair method. It is a development utility, not a substitute for Windows servicing. Manual GAC installation can create incorrect reference counts or leave the machine in a state that future updates cannot repair.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid downloading microsoft.vsa.vb.codedomprocessor.dll from random DLL websites and copying it into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
or the application folder.
That approach can install malware, the wrong historical version, an invalid strong-name identity, or a file that does not match the rest of the framework. It also does not repair a missing component-store payload, GAC registration, dependency, or application installation.
Use Windows Features, DISM, SFC, the original application installer, or Microsoft’s official .NET Framework 3.5 download and documentation instead.
What to collect if the error remains
If the fixes above do not resolve the problem, record:
- The complete error text and error code
- The executable that displays it
- The full path of that executable
- Your Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build
- Whether the problem affects one application or several
- Whether it began after an upgrade, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus action, or disk failure
- Whether .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled
- The final DISM result
- The final SFC result
- Any Protection history entry and its reported path
Also note whether the message says missing, not found, could not be loaded, corrupted, or Error 1935. “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file alone is absent; a dependency or framework component may be the actual failure.
FAQ
Is this a normal Windows system DLL?
No. It is a Microsoft .NET Framework assembly associated with legacy VSA and CodeDOM components. It is not normally a native DLL that belongs in System32.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable or DirectX?
Not for this file specifically. Those packages address different runtime families. Repair .NET Framework 3.5 first, then repair the application that reports the error.
Will .NET Framework 4.x restore it?
Not necessarily. The 2.0–3.5 framework layer is separate from the 4.x generation. Enable or repair .NET Framework 3.5, which includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0.
Does the file need a special 32-bit or 64-bit copy?
Windows servicing identifies the assembly as MSIL, and public records list it for both x86 and x64 servicing contexts. Install the correct framework feature rather than selecting an arbitrary DLL architecture.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not prove malware or legitimacy. Verify its path, digital signature, parent application, and antivirus history. A genuine Microsoft assembly should be restored through framework or application servicing.
Should I install .NET Framework 1.1?
Only if the specific legacy application requires it and compatibility has been verified. Do not install it as a general replacement for .NET Framework 3.5 on a modern Windows system.
What is the definitive fix when only one game or application fails?
Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer after enabling .NET Framework 3.5. If the application’s files are damaged, reinstalling the parent program is more reliable than replacing one shared assembly.
