Microsoft announced on October 6, 2024, that 343 Industries had become Halo Studios and that future Halo projects would move from the studio’s proprietary Slipspace technology to Unreal Engine 5. The announcement was made before the final match of the 2024 Halo World Championship in Seattle. It did not reveal a specific new game, release date, platform list, or launch window.
The change is best understood as a rebrand and strategic restructuring—not the creation of an entirely new developer. Halo Studios remains responsible for the Halo franchise, with Pierre Hintze continuing as studio head at the time of the announcement. Halo’s official announcement called the shift the beginning of a new chapter.
What Microsoft announced
The presentation, titled A New Dawn, combined two announcements:
- 343 Industries was rebranded as Halo Studios.
- Future Halo projects would be developed using Unreal Engine 5 rather than Slipspace.
Halo Studios also confirmed that multiple projects were in development. That wording is important, but limited: Microsoft did not identify those projects by name, announce a particular sequel or spin-off, or provide a timetable. Xbox Wire said the studio was not yet discussing exactly what the new games would be.

The rebrand signals a change in identity and working methods while preserving the team’s role as the Xbox Game Studios developer for Halo. Describing it as “343 Industries being shut down” or replaced by a wholly new studio goes beyond what Microsoft announced.
Why Halo is leaving Slipspace
Halo Studios framed the engine change primarily as a production decision, not simply a graphics upgrade. Maintaining proprietary technology required substantial staff and resources, while the team had also been developing Halo Infinite at the same time. In the studio’s explanation, that meant building the tools and the game simultaneously.
Unreal Engine already provides systems that Halo Studios would otherwise have to create and maintain itself. The studio also pointed to Unreal’s broad industry adoption as a potential recruiting and onboarding advantage. A larger pool of developers familiar with the engine could reduce the time needed to train new team members.
Halo Studios specifically highlighted Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite virtualized geometry system and Lumen dynamic global illumination and reflections. Those technologies may help developers create more detailed environments and sophisticated lighting, but they do not guarantee better performance, faster releases, or higher-quality games. Assets, art direction, optimization, platform targets, staffing, and project scope will still matter.
What Project Foundry actually was
The footage accompanying the announcement was called Project Foundry. It was an internal research, validation, production, and training effort designed to test how Halo could be built in Unreal Engine 5.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
The material included a Pacific Northwest-inspired environment, a snowy “Coldlands” biome, a Flood-consumed “Blightlands” area, Master Chief in Mark V armor, Covenant Elites, an energy sword, and recognizable Halo weapons and environmental assets.
Foundry was not a finished game, a standalone release, or a conventional technology demo presented as a product announcement. Halo Studios said that some of what it explored could inform or potentially appear in future projects, but the footage should not be treated as final game content. The appearance of Master Chief or familiar Halo locations does not identify a specific upcoming title.
What happens to Halo Infinite?
At the time of the reveal, Halo Infinite remained on Slipspace. Xbox said the existing game would continue receiving support through that technology, including further Operations and Forge updates.
The announcement did not say that Halo Infinite would be remade, ported, or retroactively converted to Unreal Engine 5. The rebrand did not automatically change the game’s graphics, servers, Forge tools, or existing content pipeline.
What the announcement means—and what it does not
| It means | It does not necessarily mean |
|---|---|
| Future Halo projects are planned around Unreal Engine 5. | Halo Infinite is being moved to Unreal. |
| Multiple Halo projects were in development. | Multiple games were close to release. |
| Halo Studios is reorganizing its development model. | A completely new company replaced 343 Industries. |
| Foundry demonstrated an Unreal-based Halo direction. | Foundry is a released or formally announced game. |
| Microsoft is signaling a franchise reset. | Unreal guarantees better games or faster launches. |
The potential advantages of the switch
The studio’s reasoning points to several possible benefits:
Rank #3
- Save Humanity: Light up your next mission with this Halo Energy Sword replica. Inspired by the popular video game franchise, you can wipe out the competition with this collectible LED desk lamp.
- Authentic Design: Wield Master Chief's powerful Type-1 Energy Sword, a legendary melee weapon seen in Halo Infinite. This authentic replica features light-up action and serves as a standing desk lamp.
- Dimensions: This 1:3 scale Energy Sword mood light measures approximately 14 inches tall including the base. Although this double-bladed Sangheili weapon is not made of real plasma, it will illuminate your fortress.
- Powerful Display: At the flip of a switch, this Energy Sword LED mood light will cast a brilliant glow. Features a convenient in-line on/off switch to ensure easy access. Powered by USB cable (included).
- Makes A Great Gift: This officially licensed Energy Sword desk lamp will light up your Halo fandom. Perfect for intergalactic warriors who are looking to revamp their home decor with a geeky room essentials.
- Recruiting: Unreal experience is widespread across the games industry.
- Shared technology: Epic maintains core engine systems that Halo Studios previously had to develop or support internally.
- Parallel development: A common engine and reorganized teams could make multiple projects easier to manage.
- Modern rendering tools: Nanite and Lumen provide capabilities for high-detail geometry and dynamic lighting.
- A broader ecosystem: Unreal offers extensive documentation, support, tools, and third-party integrations.
These are potential production benefits described or implied by Halo Studios’ rationale, not independently demonstrated results. Moving engines also creates work: existing tools, gameplay systems, animation, AI, physics, networking, assets, pipelines, and platform integrations may all need adaptation.
The risks and the real test
A proprietary engine can be closely tailored to one franchise. A general-purpose engine may require customization to reproduce Halo’s specific combat feel, physics, animation, multiplayer behavior, tools, and visual identity. Halo Studios will also become more dependent on Unreal’s development roadmap, fixes, technical priorities, and licensing framework.
Recommended Free Tools
Nanite and Lumen do not eliminate optimization, particularly when a game must run across different consoles and PC configurations. Likewise, multiple teams can increase development capacity while also creating coordination, staffing, leadership, and consistency problems.
Most importantly, an engine cannot solve every development challenge. It may improve infrastructure and workflow, but storytelling, encounter design, multiplayer systems, live-service operations, scope control, player feedback, and management still determine whether a Halo game succeeds.

- The names and formats of the projects in development.
- Release dates and launch windows.
- Platforms for future Halo games.
- Whether projects will focus on single-player, multiplayer, or both.
- Monetization models and live-service plans.
- How much Foundry’s content will survive into finished games.
- Whether any future project will use Master Chief as its protagonist.
The narrow, defensible takeaway is that Microsoft changed both the identity and the technical foundation of its Halo development operation. The October 2024 announcement was about preparation, direction, and production strategy—not a concrete launch reveal.
