Microsoft’s January 2025 promise to bring “the best of Xbox and Windows” to handheld gaming was a statement of direction—not an announcement of a Microsoft-built handheld. That vision took physical form later in 2025 through ASUS’s Xbox-partnered ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, then expanded into a controller-first Windows interface that Xbox began rolling out to select Windows 11 PCs in 2026.
What Microsoft said in January 2025
At CES on January 8, Microsoft VP of Next Generation Jason Ronald described work to bring Xbox console innovations to PC and handheld gaming and make Windows more gaming-focused. GameSpot reported Ronald saying: “I would say it’s bringing the best of Xbox and Windows together, because we have spent the last 20 years building a world-class operating system, but it’s really locked to the console.” GameSpot’s report of Ronald’s remarks framed this as a Windows and Xbox strategy. It did not announce a standalone handheld manufactured by Microsoft.
How the vision became ASUS hardware
ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X
In June 2025, ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as devices developed in partnership with Xbox. The hardware is ASUS’s; the Xbox connection is the partnership and software experience, not a change in who makes the devices. ASUS’s announcement described the systems as combining a full-screen Xbox experience with Windows PC gaming.
Launch and announced capabilities
Xbox announced an October 16, 2025 launch and initial markets on August 20. The devices run Windows 11 and open into a full-screen, controller-oriented Xbox experience designed to make a handheld feel more like a console. Xbox said the experience reduces background activity and brings together Xbox and Game Pass access, installed Battle.net games, and titles from other leading PC storefronts. Xbox’s launch announcement also described native play, cloud play where available, and Remote Play from an Xbox console. These are announced capabilities, not a guarantee that every game works or that every service is offered in every region. Game Pass catalog access requires membership, and service availability varies.

What Xbox mode does on a handheld
Xbox’s “full-screen experience” is a controller-navigable interface layered over Windows 11. It presents a consolidated game library and provides a console-style way to browse and launch games without requiring the player to navigate the desktop for every task. It does not turn Windows into a closed Xbox console: the handheld remains a Windows PC, with access to PC storefronts and the Windows desktop.
Xbox said on November 21, 2025 that this full-screen experience was generally available on Windows 11 handhelds in market, with access to libraries across popular PC storefronts. Xbox’s handheld availability announcement describes the software direction beyond the ASUS devices. “Generally available” does not mean that every handheld, title, or storefront has identical behavior.

From handheld interface to Windows PC rollout
On April 30, 2026, Xbox announced that Xbox mode—the updated name for the full-screen experience—was beginning a gradual rollout to Windows 11 PCs in select markets. The announced mode supports controller-optimized browsing and launching, an aggregated library that includes Game Pass and installed games from leading PC storefronts, and switching between Xbox mode and the Windows desktop. Xbox’s Xbox mode announcement does not establish universal availability: the rollout is gradual and limited to select markets.
The change reflects a broader platform strategy. In March 2026, Xbox described bringing gaming operating-system work into Windows and making the experience more consistent across screens. That strategic framing is evidence of the direction Microsoft says it is pursuing, not proof that every screen or device has identical features.

What to check before choosing a Windows gaming handheld
Xbox mode changes how a Windows handheld presents games; it does not answer the hardware questions that determine whether a particular device suits you. Compare the device and its software in these areas:
- Operating system and storefronts: Confirm which stores and libraries you use are supported, and whether you can still switch to the Windows desktop for setup or other PC tasks.
- Game compatibility: Check individual titles. An aggregated library is not a promise that all games launch, work well with a controller, or support every handheld’s controls.
- Interface and controls: Consider how much of your play happens in the controller-first interface and whether the device’s inputs work comfortably for the games you play.
- Performance and battery: Compare independent tests for the exact models and games you care about. Xbox’s software announcements do not establish comparative frame rates or battery life.
- Portability and docking: Assess size, ergonomics, and whether you plan to connect an external display. Xbox announced docking-related updates for the Ally line, but check compatibility for any dock or accessory before buying.
- Price and availability: Check current local listings. Prices and stock vary, and the announcements cited here do not establish current street prices.
In its April 2026 update, Xbox also announced Ally-line software improvements covering docking behavior, library management, vibration, and an Auto SR preview. These are company-announced updates, not independent evidence of a performance advantage. Xbox’s update announcement provides the feature details.
