But Microsoft has not confirmed that the retail console will offer unrestricted Windows 11 desktop access. That detail—and the idea that it could run PC storefronts—comes from reporting, not an announced specification.
What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix
On March 11, 2026, Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald announced Project Helix as Microsoft’s next-generation first-party Xbox console. He wrote: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” Microsoft says the system will use a custom AMD SoC co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Xbox Wire’s announcement also describes an “order of magnitude leap in ray tracing performance and capability.” That is Microsoft’s stated goal; the cited announcement provides no retail specifications or independent performance benchmarks.

Microsoft also says it is committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable “for years to come.” It has not published a complete title-by-title compatibility list, so the statement is a broad commitment rather than confirmation that every past Xbox game will work.
Will the next Xbox run Windows 11?
The confirmed facts do not settle that question. Microsoft has described Project Helix as a console for Xbox and PC games, but its announcement does not specify the console’s operating-system implementation or promise access to the Windows 11 desktop.

A February 8, 2026 report from Windows Central says the system is expected to be close to a Windows 11 gaming PC, with a TV-first console interface and the possibility of running PC software and storefronts. Those are reported expectations, not features Microsoft has officially confirmed. The distinction matters: supporting PC games does not, on its own, establish which stores, apps, or parts of Windows will be available to users.
What Xbox mode tells us—and what it doesn’t
Microsoft is bringing Xbox mode to Windows 11 as a full-screen, controller-optimized experience that lets players switch between productivity and play while retaining Windows openness. The rollout began in select markets in April 2026, according to the Windows Experience Blog. This is a Windows 11 feature, not confirmation that Project Helix will expose a desktop in the same way.

The feature has a current hardware reference point: Xbox mode debuted on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, a Windows gaming handheld. The Ally is not Project Helix, and its interface does not establish the console’s final hardware, operating system, or storefront support. Microsoft’s March 2026 overview describes the Windows direction; it does not provide a Project Helix specification.
Can Project Helix play PC games?
Microsoft explicitly says the console is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. It has not named every compatible PC game, confirmed specific third-party storefronts, or explained how PC-game access will work on the retail system. Treat “PC games” as an announced platform goal, not a guarantee that a particular game or store will be supported.

For context, Ronald said the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog contained more than 1,500 games in his March 11, 2026 post. That figure refers only to Play Anywhere titles; it is not a count of all Xbox games, all PC games, or confirmed Project Helix-compatible games.

Microsoft said it planned to send alpha versions of Project Helix hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a developer hardware milestone, not a consumer release date. No retail launch date or price is confirmed in the cited official announcements.

Windows Central reported that AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company’s semi-custom SoC development was progressing to support a 2027 launch. The same report said Microsoft had not firmly committed internally to that window and noted that software readiness and other factors mattered. A 2027 consumer launch therefore remains a reported possibility, not a confirmed date. Microsoft’s announcement does not state a price.
