Microsoft’s Windows Learning Center has published a guide to choosing and optimizing a Windows 11 gaming PC. It describes hardware classes for 1080p, 1440p and 4K gaming, along with advice on memory, SSDs, monitors, cooling and Windows gaming features.

These are gaming recommendations, not new mandatory Windows 11 requirements. Windows 11 eligibility is governed by Microsoft’s operating-system requirements, while each game’s developer remains the final authority on the hardware needed to run a particular title.

Microsoft’s recommended gaming hardware at a glance

Target Reported CPU examples Reported GPU examples Target settings
Entry-level AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel Core i5-12400 Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super or AMD Radeon RX 6600 1080p, medium settings
Mid-range AMD Ryzen 5 7600 or Intel Core i5-13600K Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 1440p, high settings
High-end AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Intel Core i7-13700K Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX High-end/4K gaming

The figures above come from contemporaneous reporting on Microsoft’s guide, published on December 14, 2025, rather than from a new Windows 11 installation standard. Neowin’s report provides the detailed tier breakdown. Microsoft’s associated Windows Learning Center page currently redirects to the broader Learning Center, so these specifications are best described as Microsoft’s reported guidance rather than a permanent certification list.

Requirements, recommendations and game-specific specifications are different

There are three separate questions buyers often conflate:

  1. Can the PC officially run Windows 11? This depends on Microsoft’s operating-system requirements.
  2. What hardware class is sensible for a desired gaming experience? Microsoft’s guide addresses this with its 1080p, 1440p and 4K tiers.
  3. Can the PC run a particular game? The game developer’s minimum and recommended specifications answer this question.

A computer below Microsoft’s suggested gaming tiers may still run older games, esports titles and less demanding releases. Conversely, meeting a Windows 11 requirement does not mean the PC will run a modern AAA game well. Even Microsoft’s listed gaming hardware cannot guarantee a particular frame rate in every title.

1080p: a sensible starting point for mainstream gaming

Microsoft’s reported entry-level tier pairs a modern quad-core processor—examples include the Ryzen 5 5600 and Core i5-12400—with a GTX 1660 Super or Radeon RX 6600. The stated target is 1080p gaming at medium settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a broad starting point, not a promise that every recent game will run at a particular frame rate. Esports games and older releases may work well on considerably weaker hardware. Newer visually demanding games may require reduced settings, an upscaling mode or compromises to texture quality.

“1080p gaming” also leaves out the most important performance target. A system designed for 60 frames per second is not necessarily suitable for 144fps or 240fps gaming. High-refresh competitive play can expose CPU limits that are invisible when the goal is a steady 60fps.

1440p: the balanced mid-range target

For 1440p at high settings, Microsoft’s reported mid-range examples are a six-core-or-better Ryzen 5 7600 or Core i5-13600K, paired with an RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT.

Moving from 1080p to 1440p generally places more of the workload on the graphics card. That makes the GPU the usual priority when upgrading for higher resolution or better visual quality. The CPU still matters for high refresh rates, simulation-heavy strategy games, large multiplayer matches and background workloads such as streaming or recording.

Resolution does not create a simple CPU ladder. A powerful GPU paired with a weak processor can still produce frame-time spikes, while an expensive CPU will not compensate for a graphics card that cannot render the selected resolution and settings.

4K: high-end hardware with important caveats

Microsoft’s reported high-end tier lists an eight-core-or-better processor such as the Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Core i7-13700K, alongside an RTX 4080 or Radeon RX 7900 XTX.

These are appropriate reference points for demanding high-resolution gaming, but “4K-capable” is not a universal performance guarantee. Results depend heavily on:

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
  • Whether the game renders at native 4K or uses upscaling;
  • Ray-tracing quality and whether ray tracing is enabled;
  • Texture quality and available VRAM;
  • Frame generation and other reconstruction technologies;
  • The target frame rate and monitor refresh rate;
  • The game engine, drivers and individual graphics settings.

A 4K system may deliver a good experience by using upscaling or adjusted settings, yet fall short of a fixed frame-rate target in another modern game. Buyers should define “4K gaming” more precisely before spending on high-end components.

How much RAM should a Windows 11 gaming PC have?

The reported guide describes 16GB of RAM as sufficient for most games and recommends 32GB for especially demanding games, heavy mods, multitasking or serious gaming use.

That does not make 16GB a universal minimum. Memory usage depends on the game, mods, browser tabs, launchers, streaming and recording software, and other background applications. Integrated graphics also use system memory, potentially leaving less available to the game.

For a new desktop intended to last several years, 32GB can be a sensible comfort target if the price difference is reasonable. Existing systems should not be upgraded automatically: check whether the game is actually causing memory pressure, paging or stutter before buying more RAM.

System RAM is also different from VRAM. A graphics card’s memory stores textures and other rendering data. A game can experience texture pop-in, stuttering or reduced texture settings because of limited VRAM even when the PC has plenty of system RAM. The reported Microsoft tiers do not provide a complete VRAM framework, so GPU model names alone should not be treated as a guarantee for every game.

Storage: 1TB SSD is a starting point, not a universal capacity

Microsoft’s reported guidance centers on a 1TB SSD for users who want a reasonably sized game library and highlights NVMe SSDs for compatible DirectStorage games.

A 1TB drive is a practical starting capacity, but it may become restrictive quickly. Modern games can occupy substantial space, and the drive also needs room for Windows, updates, shader caches, temporary files and future installations. Players with several large games may find a 2TB drive or a second SSD more useful than replacing the system drive.

Capacity is often more important than buying the fastest advertised sequential speed. Confirm that the motherboard has an available M.2 slot, that the drive is compatible, and that the case and motherboard support the desired installation format.

What DirectStorage does—and does not do

DirectStorage can let supported games move data from a compatible NVMe SSD toward the GPU with less reliance on the CPU. Its benefit depends on the game and the complete hardware and software path.

It does not make every game load dramatically faster, and an expensive NVMe drive does not guarantee a visible improvement. DirectStorage support must exist in the game, and other factors—including decompression, game design and the rest of the system—also affect loading behavior.

Choosing a monitor to match the PC

The reported Microsoft guidance discusses refresh rate, response time and IPS, VA and OLED panel types. It presents 144Hz as a smooth-gaming baseline, with 165Hz to 240Hz more relevant to competitive or fast-action gaming, and roughly 1–3ms response time as a desirable target.

The practical rule is to match the display to the frame rate the PC can realistically produce:

  • A 60Hz monitor cannot display 240 distinct frames per second.
  • A 240Hz display is difficult to justify if the system usually runs at 60–100fps.
  • A high refresh rate is most useful when frame delivery is consistently high.
  • Adaptive-sync support can help the display stay aligned with variable frame rates.

Refresh rate is not the only consideration. A cinematic single-player player may prefer higher resolution, HDR quality, color, contrast or OLED response over 240Hz. Competitive players may reasonably prioritize refresh rate and motion clarity. Response-time claims should also be interpreted carefully, because real behavior can vary by overdrive setting and refresh rate.

Windows features that can help—but cannot fix weak hardware

Game Mode

Windows Game Mode is intended to prioritize gaming-related activity and reduce background contention. It can help maintain more consistent frame delivery when other processes compete for resources, but it does not guarantee a measurable frame-rate increase.

Game Mode cannot compensate for an underpowered GPU, thermal throttling, poor drivers or a game-engine bottleneck. If performance is poor, identify the limiting component before treating a Windows setting as the solution.

Auto HDR and DirectX 12 Ultimate

Features such as Auto HDR and DirectX 12 Ultimate depend on the game, hardware, display and software path. They are not universal upgrades that every Windows 11 PC can use in the same way. A compatible display and supported title may be necessary, and the result can vary by implementation.

What the guide does not settle

It does not provide universal frame-rate guarantees

The reported specifications do not establish that a particular configuration will deliver 60fps, 144fps or any other fixed result. Such a claim requires a named game, settings, resolution, upscaling mode, drivers and test conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not replace a game’s system requirements

Always check the specifications for the exact game you intend to play. A game’s minimum requirement may target low settings and a lower frame rate, while its recommended requirement may assume a particular resolution or quality preset.

It does not fully explain VRAM

GPU model names are useful reference points, but two cards with similar positioning can behave differently depending on memory capacity, game engine, textures and ray tracing. Do not choose solely by the model name if you plan to play demanding games at high texture settings.

It does not make laptop parts equivalent to desktop parts

A laptop GPU or CPU with a similar name to a desktop component can perform differently because of power limits, cooling and chassis design. Laptop buyers should check the exact GPU, its power limit, cooling system, display resolution and refresh rate, upgradeable RAM and storage, and whether the machine uses integrated or discrete graphics.

CPU, GPU, power and cooling: how to spend the upgrade budget

For higher resolutions, the GPU is generally the most important purchase. For very high frame rates, CPU limits become more visible. Strategy, simulation, MMO and large multiplayer games can also be CPU-sensitive even at modest resolutions.

Buying an eight-core CPU solely because the target resolution is 4K can be poor value if the GPU is weak. Conversely, buying a high-end GPU for a low-refresh 1080p display may deliver diminishing returns.

The guide also discusses power supplies, cooling, case airflow and cable management. There is no single correct PSU wattage for every system. Sizing depends on the CPU, GPU, transient power behavior, drives, accessories, PSU quality and future upgrade plans. Check the specific graphics card’s power guidance and leave sensible headroom rather than selecting by a generic tier label.

Cooling must likewise be checked against the exact socket, cooler height, radiator support, case airflow and GPU length. A component list that looks suitable on paper can still throttle or fail to fit in a poorly matched case.

Should you upgrade your current PC?

  1. Check the bottleneck first. Monitor GPU utilization, CPU utilization, temperatures, memory use and frame-time behavior while playing the games that matter to you.
  2. Upgrade the GPU when resolution or visual quality is the problem. This is usually the priority for moving from 1080p to 1440p or 4K.
  3. Upgrade the CPU for high-refresh or CPU-bound games. High frame rates, simulation workloads and large multiplayer games can benefit more from processor performance.
  4. Move to 32GB when memory is actually under pressure. Mods, multitasking, streaming and recording are common reasons.
  5. Add storage when capacity is the problem. A second SSD may be more practical than replacing a perfectly adequate system drive.
  6. Match the monitor to the result you want. Do not buy a 240Hz display unless the hardware and games can make meaningful use of it.

Use Microsoft’s tiers as broad buying landmarks, then check the exact game, monitor and workload. The best-value system is the one that meets the desired frame rate and image quality without paying for unused CPU, GPU or display capability.
