Microsoft’s Xbox PC App Adds Steam Games and Access to Other Stores

The Xbox PC app is becoming a unified Windows gaming front end for supported installed games from Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, Game Pass, and other stores—but it is not a universal marketplace or license-transfer system.

Microsoft’s Xbox PC app can now act as a central library and launch point for supported games installed through Steam, Battle.net, Xbox, PC Game Pass, and other PC storefronts. It does not merge those stores, transfer licenses, or remove the need for third-party launchers. Steam remains the place where Steam games are bought, owned, updated, and authenticated; the Xbox app is an additional Windows gaming front end.

That distinction matters most on Windows handhelds, where switching between desktop launchers can be inconvenient. The Xbox app’s aggregated library—and, on supported Windows 11 devices, Xbox Mode—can make that navigation easier without becoming a universal replacement for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, Battle.net, or Playnite.

What Microsoft added

Microsoft announced its aggregated gaming library for Xbox Insiders on June 23, 2025. The feature was designed to show Xbox and PC Game Pass content alongside installed games from Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts in one library. Microsoft later positioned the experience as part of a broader Xbox interface for Windows PCs and handhelds.

Microsoft also introduced My Apps, an area for finding, viewing, downloading, and launching third-party applications such as storefronts, browsers, and gaming utilities. My Apps is therefore broader than a Steam-library connection: it helps users reach the software that still manages their games.

On April 30, 2026, Microsoft began rolling out Xbox Mode on Windows 11 PCs. Xbox Mode provides a controller-oriented, full-screen interface that includes the Xbox Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts. The rollout began in select markets and is expanding over time, so availability is not necessarily identical across countries, devices, or Windows installations.

Microsoft’s aggregated-library announcement, its My Apps announcement, and the Xbox Mode rollout announcement describe these as access and navigation features—not as a new unified PC marketplace.

What “Steam support” really means

The Xbox PC app can It does not
Surface supported installed Steam games in an aggregated library Transfer Steam licenses into the Xbox ecosystem
Provide a central place to select and launch eligible games Turn Steam purchases into Xbox purchases
Help users find and launch third-party storefronts through My Apps Guarantee detection of every game, storefront, or installation
Offer a controller-focused Windows interface where Xbox Mode is available Make PC games playable on Xbox consoles

The safest description is that the Xbox app can surface and launch supported installed games from Steam and other PC storefronts. Microsoft’s first-party announcements use broad language such as “Battle.net and other leading PC storefronts”; they do not establish a permanent, exhaustive compatibility list for every store and every game.

Does it show your entire Steam library?

Do not assume that the Xbox app displays every game you own on Steam. Microsoft’s clearest description centers on games that are installed locally and detected by the Windows gaming experience, rather than a complete cloud-synchronized inventory of every title attached to a Steam account.

  • Installed games: These are the main use case for the aggregated library.
  • Owned but uninstalled games: They may not appear in the same way as locally installed titles.
  • Unusual installations: Games installed in uncommon locations or using atypical launcher configurations may not be detected.
  • Games with additional launchers: They may still require a publisher launcher, account sign-in, DRM service, or separate online service.

In practical terms, seeing a game in the Xbox app does not prove that Microsoft has synchronized its ownership data with Steam. It indicates that the game can be presented as an available Windows game and, when selected, handed off to the software that owns or manages it.

Can you buy Steam or Epic games in the Xbox app?

There is no indication that the Xbox app provides a single Microsoft checkout for third-party storefronts. Purchases and redemptions remain handled by the relevant store.

A typical setup looks like this:

  1. Install the Xbox app and the relevant third-party launcher, such as Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, or Battle.net.
  2. Sign in to the third-party account.
  3. Buy, redeem, or otherwise obtain the game through that store.
  4. Install the game using its original storefront.
  5. Use the Xbox app as an additional library and launch surface.

My Apps can make the third-party software easier to find and launch, but it does not make those stores interchangeable. Microsoft Store and Game Pass content remains handled through Microsoft’s own ecosystem, while Steam, Epic, GOG, and Battle.net retain their own accounts, purchases, updates, and services.

What happens when you select Play?

The Xbox app generally acts as a front end and hands off to the relevant game or launcher. The original platform may open in the background or on screen to handle authentication, DRM, updates, cloud saves, overlays, multiplayer services, or account checks.

That handoff is expected. This feature is an aggregation layer, not a compatibility layer. It does not:

  • make a Steam license available through Xbox Cloud Gaming;
  • add Xbox achievements or Xbox cloud saves to every third-party game;
  • enable Xbox Play Anywhere for a game bought elsewhere; or
  • remove the original launcher’s requirements.

Visibility in the Xbox library is therefore not evidence of Xbox-platform entitlement. A third-party game can be easy to find from the Xbox interface while remaining completely dependent on its original store.

How to use the aggregated library

Exact labels and availability vary by Xbox app version, Windows build, device, market, and rollout stage. The usual path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install or update the Xbox app on a compatible Windows PC or handheld.
  2. Install and sign in to the storefront that owns the game.
  3. Install the game through that storefront.
  4. Open the Xbox app and go to its library area.
  5. Look for the installed title among the aggregated games or recent titles.
  6. Select the game to launch it.
  7. If it is missing, open My Apps and check that the relevant storefront or launcher is installed and available.

If the title still does not appear, launch it directly from its original storefront. The Xbox app is optional convenience software, not a replacement for the underlying installation and account system.

Prerequisites and availability

You may need:

  • a compatible Windows PC or Windows handheld;
  • the current Xbox PC app;
  • Windows 11 for Xbox Mode, where that feature is available;
  • the original third-party launcher;
  • an account signed in to that launcher; and
  • the game installed locally if the library is relying on installed-game detection.

The aggregated-library feature began with Xbox Insider testing, and Xbox Mode is being rolled out in phases. Availability can differ by region, hardware, Windows version, app build, and account. Microsoft’s Windows overview discusses the experience across PCs and handhelds, but readers should not interpret that as a guarantee that every feature is available on every device.

Why this matters on Windows handhelds

A unified library is more useful on a handheld than on a conventional desktop. On a small screen, opening separate launchers with touch controls or navigating a desktop interface can be cumbersome. Xbox Mode is intended to provide a controller-first, full-screen Windows experience, while the aggregated library gives users one place to find games installed from multiple services.

The experience may still be imperfect. Selecting a game can open a desktop-style launcher, request keyboard or mouse input, or expose controls that were not designed for a handheld. The Xbox interface simplifies discovery; it cannot guarantee that every game and launcher will behave like a native console title.

Common problems and fixes

A game does not appear

Confirm that the game is installed and launches from its original storefront. Then update Windows, the Xbox app, and the third-party launcher; restart the Xbox app after installing a game or launcher; and check My Apps for the storefront. Unsupported stores, unusual install locations, separate launcher requirements, permissions, or a phased rollout can all prevent detection.

Selecting the game opens another launcher

That is normally expected. The original launcher may be required for ownership checks, DRM, updates, cloud saves, overlays, or multiplayer. Use the original launcher directly if the handoff fails.

The game appears twice

A title may be installed through more than one store or may be represented by both an Xbox entry and a third-party entry. Check the platform label and installation source before removing anything.

Expected Xbox features are missing

A Steam, Epic, GOG, or Battle.net game does not automatically gain Xbox achievements, Xbox cloud saves, Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox Cloud Gaming, or Xbox-specific overlays simply because it appears in the Xbox app.

Xbox app versus Steam, Epic, GOG, Battle.net, and Playnite

The Xbox app is a strong choice when the priority is quick access to Xbox, Game Pass, and installed games from several Windows storefronts—particularly on a handheld. It is less compelling as a replacement for a full store or advanced library manager.

  • GOG Galaxy: Remains relevant for GOG ownership and games, including users who value DRM-free software.
  • Battle.net: Continues to manage its own games, accounts, updates, and services.
  • Playnite: A credible alternative for users who primarily want a customizable multi-launcher library with more control over metadata and presentation.

Dedicated launchers may be preferable if you need full store browsing and purchasing, per-game launch parameters, extensive metadata, custom artwork, detailed install-location control, mod-management integration, or platform-specific achievements and cloud saves. Microsoft’s announcements position the Xbox app around convenience and access rather than replacing every specialist feature in those applications.

For readers considering Game Pass, the Xbox app is the native entry point for PC Game Pass titles, but a subscription is not required to use the app as a front end for Steam or other third-party games. Likewise, buying a Windows handheld solely for this feature may not make sense if the real need is only a better library organizer; battery life, controls, performance, display quality, storage, repairability, and Windows usability remain more important hardware considerations.

Verdict

Microsoft’s Xbox PC app is becoming a useful Windows gaming dashboard: it can bring supported installed games from Steam and other PC storefronts into one place, provide access to the launchers themselves through My Apps, and offer a more controller-friendly surface through Xbox Mode where available.

It is not a unified marketplace, a cross-store ownership system, or a guaranteed replacement for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG Galaxy, Battle.net, or Playnite. The practical benefit is simpler discovery and launching—not merged licenses or launcher-free gaming.
