Mimic Tear Ashes are found in Night’s Sacred Ground in Nokron, Eternal City. Use a Stonesword Key at the imp statue to open the fog wall, then loot the chest inside. The summon costs HP instead of FP and creates an AI-controlled copy of your character using the equipment you had equipped when you summoned it.

Mimic Tear Ashes are found in Night’s Sacred Ground in Nokron, Eternal City. The legendary Spirit Ash is inside a locked room opened with a Stonesword Key at an imp statue. It summons an AI-controlled copy of your character, using the equipment and combat options you had equipped when you called it.

“Mimic Tear” can mean two different things in Elden Ring: the transforming enemy encountered in Nokron, or the Mimic Tear Ashes item that summons a copy of the player. This guide focuses on the Spirit Ashes, while pointing out where the item differs from the earlier Mimic Tear boss encounter.

What Mimic Tear Ashes do

Mimic Tear Ashes summon a spirit that takes your character’s form. Unlike most Spirit Ashes, it does not consume FP. Instead, summoning it costs a portion of your HP.

The mimic is not a fixed companion with a predefined weapon or spell list. It copies the loadout you are using when you summon it, including:

  • Weapons and shields
  • Armor
  • Talismans
  • Spells and incantations
  • Weapon skills
  • Consumable items

That makes Mimic Tear unusually customizable. It is best understood as a second, AI-controlled combatant rather than a universally optimal build. A durable, uncomplicated loadout can produce a much more reliable ally than a setup that depends on precise spell rotations, conditional buffs, or constant weapon swapping.

The item’s lore describes the spirit as a mimic whose imitation does not extend to the summoner’s will. Its existence is also tied to the Eternal City’s attempt to forge a lord. In practical terms, however, the most important detail is this: the quality of the summon depends heavily on what you equip before calling it.

Mimic Tear Ashes location

You obtain Mimic Tear Ashes in Nokron, Eternal City, in the section called Night’s Sacred Ground. The ashes are not awarded for defeating the Mimic Tear boss.

How to reach the chest

  1. Progress far enough to gain access to Nokron, Eternal City.
  2. Travel through the Nokron route toward the Ancestral Woods.
  3. From the Ancestral Woods, cross the rooftops and descend into the cathedral-like structures leading toward Night’s Sacred Ground.
  4. Look for the room sealed by an imp statue and a fog wall.
  5. Use a Stonesword Key at the imp statue to dispel the fog wall.
  6. Open the treasure chest inside to collect Mimic Tear Ashes.

The route includes rooftop traversal and a descent into the lower part of the area, so it is easy to pass the relevant room if you are moving quickly. The chest is in a locked room rather than at the end of the Mimic Tear boss fight.

If you want a physical reference for Nokron’s route, maps, dungeons, NPCs, and progression systems, Elden Ring Books of Knowledge Volume I is the most directly relevant guidebook fit. It covers the base game’s Lands Between rather than only Mimic Tear, but that broader coverage is useful when the route depends on regional progression and less obvious paths.

How to upgrade Mimic Tear Ashes

Mimic Tear Ashes use Ghost Glovewort for upgrades, not Grave Glovewort. The summon can be upgraded through +10.

  • Upgrade material: Ghost Glovewort
  • Maximum level: +10
  • Final upgrade: requires a Great Ghost Glovewort

Upgrading is especially valuable because the summon’s survivability increases substantially. Reference data reports that a +10 Mimic Tear has approximately 3.3 times the HP of the unupgraded version. That figure comes from game-reference data rather than an original test, and exact behavior can be affected by the game version.

In practice, a low-level Mimic Tear may attract attention without surviving long enough to contribute consistently. A fully upgraded version is considerably better suited to drawing pressure, applying status effects, healing when its copied setup allows it, and creating openings for the player.

What makes Mimic Tear strong?

Mimic Tear’s strength comes from flexibility, not simply from copying your character’s damage. The spirit can bring your defensive tools, weapon skills, status effects, healing options, and spells into the fight at the same time.

It can use your entire loadout

Before summoning, you can effectively configure the AI by changing your equipped gear. A player using a heavy weapon can give the mimic a straightforward melee role. A caster can create a ranged ally. A status-focused build can give it another source of buildup. A hybrid setup can let it switch between several types of attack.

This also means that a poor loadout can produce a poor summon. If your equipment is fragile, highly conditional, or dependent on careful player timing, the mimic may not use it as effectively as you do.

It can provide useful healing and status buildup

Community-maintained reference material reports that Mimic Tear’s direct damage is weaker than a player using the same equipment. Even so, healing and status buildup can remain highly useful. The summon does not need to match your damage output to be valuable: surviving, distracting a boss, applying a status effect, or creating time to heal can all change the shape of a fight.

It can use consumables

Reference data reports that the mimic can use consumables without the same scarcity concern faced by the player, including effectively unlimited use by the summon. Treat this as an implementation detail that may warrant checking against the version you are playing, rather than as a promise that every consumable behaves identically in every situation.

How to prepare your character before summoning

  1. Equip the role you want the mimic to perform. Put on the weapons, armor, talismans, spells, skills, and consumables you want copied before you summon it.
  2. Prefer reliable actions. Heavy weapons, durable defenses, dependable weapon skills, and straightforward attacks are easier for an AI companion to use consistently than a complicated rotation.
  3. Consider healing access. If your setup gives the mimic a practical way to heal, that may improve its longevity, although the AI will decide when to attempt it.
  4. Use status effects when appropriate. A second source of reliable status buildup can be more valuable than giving the mimic several low-impact offensive options.
  5. Limit competing offensive spells. Reference material reports that the AI can struggle to choose effectively when it has too many damaging spells available. A smaller, purposeful spell selection is more predictable.
  6. Summon only after finalizing the loadout. The important setup is the equipment you have when Mimic Tear is called, not necessarily the equipment you plan to use afterward.

Good and bad loadout principles

Usually helpful Potentially unreliable
Durable armor and defenses Extremely fragile setups
A weapon with a clear, repeatable attack pattern Several competing weapons or situational options
Reliable status application A damage plan that requires exact player timing
A small selection of useful spells A large collection of offensive spells with overlapping purposes
Healing or sustain options Assuming the AI will heal at the ideal moment

These are loadout principles derived from the summon’s documented equipment-copying behavior and reported AI limitations, not a guarantee that one build will perform identically in every boss arena. The mimic’s results vary with the encounter, terrain, enemy behavior, and the player’s own build.

Mimic Tear patch history and current status

Older guides sometimes describe Mimic Tear as if it were unchanged since the launch version. That is not accurate. FromSoftware’s official patch 1.03 notes stated that the damage of the spirit summoned by Mimic Tear Ashes was decreased and that its behavior pattern was changed. Launch-era claims about overwhelming damage should therefore be treated cautiously.

Mimic Tear also received specific attention during the Shadow of the Erdtree-era balance updates. In patch 1.13, FromSoftware increased attack power and damage negation for certain other summoned spirits at higher Revered Spirit Ash blessing levels while explicitly excluding Mimic Tear from those increases. The same patch history records a fix for a bug involving Mimic Tear’s behavior when casting spells, incantations, and skills.

As of the research date, Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring news archive listed version 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025, as the latest listed patch entry. The available official patch-history material does not identify a later Mimic Tear-specific change beyond the behavior fixes and exclusions described above. That is not the same as claiming that no platform-specific regulation or update could exist, so players should still check their game’s displayed version if exact patch parity matters.

Is Mimic Tear still worth using?

Yes, if you want a flexible Spirit Ash that can complement your own build. It remains particularly attractive for players who value survivability, distraction, healing opportunities, or a second source of status buildup.

It is not mandatory, and it is not a guaranteed answer to every boss. Its damage was reduced from the launch-era version, its AI can make inefficient choices, and a mimic built from a weak or overly complicated loadout may underperform. A fully upgraded summon with a durable and focused setup is a much more defensible recommendation than simply equipping Mimic Tear and expecting it to solve an encounter automatically.

Quick checklist

  • Reach Nokron, Eternal City.
  • Travel through the Ancestral Woods toward Night’s Sacred Ground.
  • Find the fog wall opened by a Stonesword Key at an imp statue.
  • Open the chest inside to obtain Mimic Tear Ashes.
  • Upgrade it with Ghost Glovewort to a maximum of +10.
  • Use a Great Ghost Glovewort for the final upgrade.
  • Equip the loadout you want copied before summoning.
  • Favor durable, straightforward equipment and avoid giving the AI too many competing spells.
  • Remember that the Mimic Tear boss and Mimic Tear Ashes are separate encounters and rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get Mimic Tear Ashes?

Mimic Tear Ashes are in Night’s Sacred Ground in Nokron, Eternal City. Reach the area through the Ancestral Woods, cross the rooftops, and use a Stonesword Key at the imp statue to open the fog wall protecting the chest.

Do you get Mimic Tear Ashes from the Mimic Tear boss?

No. The Mimic Tear boss is an earlier Nokron encounter. Mimic Tear Ashes are a separate item found later in Night’s Sacred Ground behind a Stonesword Key door.

What do you need to upgrade Mimic Tear?

Mimic Tear Ashes use Ghost Glovewort and can be upgraded to +10. A Great Ghost Glovewort is needed for the final upgrade.

How should you build around Mimic Tear?

Equip the gear you want copied before summoning: weapons, armor, talismans, spells, skills, and consumables. A durable, focused setup is generally more predictable for the AI than a complicated loadout with many competing offensive spells.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Mimic Tear still good after the nerf?

It remains a strong and flexible option, but it is not universally the best Spirit Ash or a guaranteed boss solution. Its damage was reduced in patch 1.03, and its performance depends on your loadout, the encounter, and the AI.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Find Mimic Tear Ashes in a Stonesword Key room in Night’s Sacred Ground, Nokron; upgrade them with Ghost Glovewort to +10; and configure your equipment before summoning. Mimic Tear is powerful because it is customizable, but its effectiveness depends on your loadout and its AI rather than on a universal, guaranteed build.
