Choose Mina the Hollower for burrowing-based traversal, an interconnected world, multiple weapon movesets, build experimentation with Sidearms and Trinkets, and character leveling. Both come from Yacht Club Games and share an 8-bit-inspired sensibility, but Mina is a new game and new IP rather than a Shovel Knight sequel.

What each game actually is
Mina the Hollower
Mina the Hollower is a single-player action-adventure in which Mina, a Hollower, is sent to rescue a cursed island. Its signature action is burrowing: Mina can move beneath hazards and monsters instead of treating the ground as a simple platform. Official descriptions also identify a whip, an arsenal of weapons, Sidearms and equippable Trinkets as parts of the design.

The presentation deliberately evokes 8-bit and Game Boy Color-era games while adding modern animation and a widescreen format. That combination is important to the comparison: Mina uses a retro visual language, but its systems are not limited to a single fixed weapon or a sequence of isolated stages.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is the complete edition of the Shovel Knight series, not one campaign that happens to be sold under a subtitle. Yacht Club Games frames its central adventure around running, jumping and battling as Shovel Knight, wielder of the Shovel Blade, against the Order of No Quarter and the Enchantress.
Because Treasure Trove is a collection, the fairest comparison is Mina’s overall action-adventure structure against Treasure Trove’s set of Shovel Knight campaigns. Calling Mina a direct sequel, or treating Treasure Trove as a single uninterrupted story, gives the wrong expectations for both products.
Movement: burrowing versus platforming
How Mina changes traversal
In Mina, burrowing is not a decorative move. It is the verb that distinguishes the game from conventional run-and-jump platformers. Going underground lets you approach hazards and enemies from a different layer, and it makes the terrain itself part of navigation and combat. The result is an action-adventure rhythm in which you read the connected environment, decide when to disappear below it and then surface at a useful position.
That design favors players who enjoy route finding and experimenting with movement options. A room is not only a line of platforms to clear; its surface, hazards and underground paths can all matter. The official material does not establish a universal difficulty ranking against Shovel Knight, so the practical distinction is about movement style rather than a claim that one game is objectively harder.
How Shovel Knight sets its challenge
Shovel Knight’s official description puts running and jumping first. The Shovel Blade gives the character a recognizable way to attack and interact with the platforming space, while the campaign structure asks you to learn each stage’s hazards, enemy placements and jumps. The emphasis is immediate and legible: move across a level, use the shovel effectively, and master the timing required by the stage.
If you want a traditional action-platformer loop in which movement is primarily horizontal and vertical momentum, Treasure Trove is the more direct fit. If you want movement to include a second layer under the terrain and to influence exploration through a connected map, Mina is the more substantial departure.
Combat and equipment
Mina’s weapon and Sidearm system
Mina begins with a whip but can use weapons with different movesets. Celia Schilling’s overview identifies early choices such as the Nightstar, BlastStrike Maul, and Whisper & Vesper daggers. These are not merely cosmetic swaps: selecting a weapon changes how you approach distance, timing and enemy openings.

Shovel Knight’s shovel-first identity
The Shovel Blade is the defining tool in Shovel Knight’s base character design. Its attack and movement interactions make the weapon part of the platforming language, so combat and navigation are closely linked. Treasure Trove’s variety comes from the collection’s campaigns and their different playable perspectives, but the comparison should not imply that the base Shovel Knight is built around Mina’s interchangeable weapon-and-Trinket framework.
This difference matters when choosing. Players who like learning one central weapon and extracting depth from its timing will recognize Treasure Trove’s appeal. Players who want to change attack patterns and assemble a loadout before a difficult encounter will find more explicit equipment decisions in Mina.
Progression and build decisions
Mina’s leveling model
Mina includes level-ups and build choices involving stats, weapons, Sidearms and Trinkets. Schilling describes the intended range from a balanced build to a high-risk, high-reward style. In practical terms, you are not only improving a character along one predetermined path; you are deciding which strengths to emphasize and which vulnerabilities you are willing to accept.
The 60 Trinkets reported by Yacht Club Games give that system a broad pool of possible combinations. The figure is a publisher count for the 2026 game, not a promise that every Trinket is equally useful or that collecting all of them is required. It does, however, signal a much more configurable progression layer than the Shovel Blade-centered premise suggests.
Treasure Trove’s collection-based progression
Treasure Trove’s progression is best understood campaign by campaign. You learn the rules of a particular adventure, defeat its stages and bosses, and experience the distinct identity of the collection’s playable content. That is a different kind of variety from Mina’s statistical leveling and equipment combinations: Treasure Trove broadens the package through campaigns, while Mina broadens a single adventure through builds and exploration.
World structure and scope
Mina’s connected island
Yacht Club Games describes Mina’s setting as dozens of interconnected regions. Its main quest is organized around six generators, giving the rescue mission a clear structural objective while leaving room for exploration between major goals. The publisher also reports more than 25 bosses and mini-bosses.
In a February 12, 2026 announcement, Yacht Club Games said Mina contains more total screens than the entirety of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. That is a scope comparison supplied by the developer, not a measured playtime test or a quality ranking. Screen count also does not tell you how dense a region is, how often you revisit it or how long a particular player will take.
Treasure Trove’s campaign collection
Treasure Trove’s scope comes from its status as the complete Shovel Knight edition. Rather than one island that links every objective, it presents the Shovel Knight series as a package of campaigns. The structure makes it easy to approach the collection as a sequence of distinct adventures, each with its own pacing and identity, instead of expecting one continuous interconnected map.

How the different structures affect play
The distinction between a connected world and a campaign collection changes how you spend your time. Mina asks you to remember geography, notice paths that connect regions and decide whether a detour is worth taking before returning to the main objective. Its six-generator structure provides direction, but the island framing leaves room for movement between objectives. The reported number of screens and areas suggests breadth within that single setting.
Treasure Trove presents a clearer menu of separate adventures. You can focus on mastering the current campaign’s stage language, then move to another campaign when you want a different playable identity or rhythm. Its breadth is therefore modular rather than geographic. Neither structure is automatically more substantial: Mina concentrates variety in one world, while Treasure Trove distributes it across the complete series package.
Which game fits your preferred play style?
| If you prioritize… | Better match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic run-and-jump action with a single iconic weapon | Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove | The official premise centers on running, jumping and the Shovel Blade. |
| Burrowing under hazards and approaching rooms from multiple layers | Mina the Hollower | Burrowing is Mina’s defining traversal and combat verb. |
| A connected world and route discovery | Mina the Hollower | Its regions are interconnected rather than presented solely as a campaign sequence. |
| Several campaigns in one complete package | Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove | Treasure Trove is explicitly the complete edition of the Shovel Knight series. |
| Changing weapons and assembling effects around a build | Mina the Hollower | Weapons, Sidearms, Trinkets and level-ups all contribute to build decisions. |
| A retro-style game that is new rather than a sequel | Mina the Hollower | Yacht Club Games presents Mina as a new game and new IP, despite the shared developer and retro sensibility. |
This recommendation is based on the documented mechanics and product structures, not on hands-on head-to-head testing or an independent difficulty ranking.

Mina’s 2026 release information
The current Mina page from Yacht Club Games and Nintendo’s US listing give May 29, 2026 as the release date. An earlier Yacht Club announcement described a Spring 2026 launch window; the later date supersedes that broad window for current reporting.
Platform lists differ by source and date. Yacht Club’s current page links to Steam, Humble, GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The February 2026 launch announcement listed Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Steam. Nintendo’s US store listing gives May 29, 2026 for the Switch and Switch 2 digital editions. These lists should not be merged into a claim that every system launched simultaneously.
The official Nintendo source reviewed lists digital editions. No confirmed physical cartridge or disc edition for Mina is established here, so do not assume a retail copy exists in a particular region.
Treasure Trove platforms and physical history
Yacht Club Games’ official Treasure Trove page lists Steam, Humble, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Yacht Club announced a physical edition for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2018 and named Amazon among preorder retailers. The planned PlayStation 4 physical release was canceled in 2021.

Buying and platform checklist
Start with the edition rather than the console name. For Mina, verify the storefront and date because the current product page and the February 2026 launch announcement list different platform groups. The Nintendo US listing specifically covers digital Switch and Switch 2 editions on May 29, 2026. A listing on one platform should not be treated as proof of simultaneous availability on every other system.
For Treasure Trove, confirm that the product is the complete edition rather than an individual Shovel Knight campaign. If you want a cartridge, inspect the seller, region and condition: the 2018 announcement described a Nintendo Switch physical edition and mentioned Amazon preorders, but stock and seller status are not established here. The planned PS4 physical release was canceled in 2021, so a PS4 listing needs especially careful verification.
There is no confirmed Mina cartridge or disc in the official Nintendo material reviewed. Treat Mina as a digital purchase unless a later publisher or retailer announcement clearly identifies a physical edition for your region.
Is Mina a Shovel Knight sequel?
No. Yacht Club Games calls Mina a new game and a new IP. Celia Schilling wrote, “We put our hearts and our future into this game and we believe it is a worthy follow up to our beloved blue burrower, Shovel Knight.” The statement explains the studio’s sense of creative continuity and ambition; it does not establish that Mina belongs to the Shovel Knight series or continues its story.
The useful way to read the relationship is spiritual rather than narrative. Both games come from the same developer and draw on retro action design, but Mina’s burrowing, interconnected map and build systems give it a separate identity.
What the comparison cannot establish
Official product pages establish mechanics, feature counts, release information and platform listings, but they do not provide a tested head-to-head difficulty ranking. They also do not establish identical playtime, current physical stock, review scores or sales figures. A recommendation should therefore stay tied to structure and mechanics: choose the movement, progression and product format that match your priorities instead of treating “more screens” or “more campaigns” as a guaranteed quality verdict.
Bottom line: which should you play?
Pick Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove if your priority is a polished run-and-jump action package organized as the complete Shovel Knight collection, with the Shovel Blade defining the core play. Pick Mina the Hollower if you want Yacht Club Games to reinterpret that retro foundation through underground movement, a connected island, multiple weapons, Sidearms, 60 reported Trinkets, level-ups and a six-generator quest.

Neither choice is a substitute for the other. Treasure Trove offers breadth through a series collection; Mina offers breadth inside one new action-adventure. The shared studio explains why they may appeal to the same player, while the movement and progression systems explain why they do not play alike.
