Mindustry’s default dedicated-server port is 6567. A reachable server needs that port—or your replacement port—allowed for both TCP and UDP, opened in the host firewall, and forwarded by your router when the server is at home. Change the application value from the server console with config port <new-port>, verify it with config port, then have players join using <public-ip>:<port>.

The short answer
A dedicated Mindustry server listens on port 6567 by default. The Mindustry Wiki’s current setup guidance says to allow port 6567 for TCP and UDP. If the server runs on a computer behind a home router, create a port-forwarding rule to that computer’s local IP. Without that rule, people outside your home network cannot reach the dedicated server.

You can select another unused port. At the server console, run config port 5668 (5668 is the example used by a Hetzner Community tutorial), then confirm the value with config port. Replace 5668 with the number you actually chose. The same number must be used in the server configuration, router rule, host firewall, cloud firewall if applicable, and the address players enter.
What the Mindustry port does
Port 6567 is the documented default
The dedicated server starts on 6567 unless its configuration has been changed. The number identifies the network endpoint at which the game service accepts connections; it is not a map number, server ID, or password. A client therefore needs both an address and a port, such as 198.51.100.24:6567. The address in that example is documentation-only; use your server’s real public address.

Why both TCP and UDP matter
Mindustry’s setup instructions call for allowing the selected port on both transport protocols. Opening only TCP or only UDP can leave the server apparently running while some connection attempts fail. Apply the same TCP-and-UDP choice to every layer you control: the operating-system firewall, the home router’s forwarding rule, and a provider’s network firewall on a virtual or dedicated server.
Changing the number does not replace the other rules
A console command changes where the application listens. It does not automatically edit your router, operating-system firewall, or cloud firewall. If you move from 6567 to 5668, every corresponding rule and every client address must move to 5668 as well.

What you need before changing or forwarding a port
- A running Mindustry dedicated-server release and access to its console.
- Permission to change the server configuration and the host firewall.
- For home hosting, administrator access to the router.
- A stable local IP address for the computer running the server, so a router rule does not point to a different device later.
- An unused port number selected by the server administrator if 6567 is unsuitable.
- The server’s public or remote address, which players will combine with the selected port.
Keep a note of the final port and local IP before testing. A mismatch is much easier to find when the intended values are written down.
How to change the Mindustry server port
1. Start the dedicated server
Download the dedicated-server release, launch it with Java, and use the console command host <mapname> [mode] to start a game. The server must actually be hosting a map before a player can join; changing a firewall rule cannot make an idle console accept a game connection.
2. Read the current value
At the Mindustry console, enter:
config portThis displays the configured port. A new installation normally reports 6567, the default documented by the Mindustry Wiki and the Hetzner Community tutorial.
3. Set a different value
Enter the new number as an argument:
config port 5668Here, 5668 is an example, not a required choice. Select another unused value if it conflicts with a service on the machine or with your network policy. The exact replacement is an administrator decision; the important requirement is consistency across all subsequent rules.

4. Verify the setting
Run the read command again:
config portThe console should now report 5668 in this example. If it still reports 6567, repeat the command carefully and check that you are configuring the intended server process. Record the value shown by this verification step; it is the value to use in firewall, forwarding, and client configuration.
5. Start or host the game on the configured server
Use host <mapname> [mode] after the port is set, and leave the dedicated-server process running while testing. A successful configuration read only proves that the application accepted the setting; it does not prove that a router or firewall is passing traffic.
How to forward the port on a home router
1. Give the server a stable local address
Identify the computer’s local IP address and reserve it in the router, or configure another method that keeps the address stable. A forwarding rule tied to a changing local address can silently point at the wrong device after a reboot or lease change.
2. Open the router’s port-forwarding page
Router labels vary by manufacturer. Look for a section named Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or a similar term, then use instructions for your exact make and model. The official Mindustry guidance specifically recommends looking up model-specific forwarding directions because the interface is not uniform.

3. Create a rule for the selected port
Forward the chosen external port to the dedicated server’s stable local IP and the server’s listening port. If you kept the default, the example is 6567 to the server computer on 6567. If you changed the application to 5668, forward 5668 instead. Select both TCP and UDP; do not create a TCP-only rule.

4. Save, apply, and test from outside the network
Save the router rule and allow the router to apply it. Test with a player who is not connected to the same home network, or from another suitable remote connection. A test from inside the house can show that the server works locally without proving that the public forwarding path works.

If your router offers separate fields for external and internal ports, the simplest arrangement is to use the same selected number in both fields. Whatever mapping you choose, players must use the external port and the server must listen on the internal destination port.
Open the host and cloud firewalls
Operating-system firewall
Create inbound rules allowing the selected port for TCP and UDP on the computer running the server. With the default, that means 6567/TCP and 6567/UDP. After changing to 5668, allow 5668/TCP and 5668/UDP and remove or disable obsolete rules if they are no longer needed.

A packet can be forwarded correctly and still be discarded by the computer itself.
Cloud or VPS firewall
A server hosted on a virtual private server or another remote provider does not sit behind your home router, so there is no residential forwarding step. It still may have two firewall layers: the provider’s cloud firewall and the operating system’s local firewall. Allow the selected port for both TCP and UDP in each layer. The Hetzner Community example explicitly changes the firewall allowance when the server moves from 6567 to 5668.

How players connect
Use the in-game server form
- Open Mindustry and choose Play.
- Select Join Game.
- Choose Add Server.
- Enter the remote or public address in the form
<ip-address>:<port>. - Save the entry and select it to connect.
For the default, the format is <public-ip>:6567. For the example changed port, it is <public-ip>:5668. The Hetzner tutorial illustrates the format with 203.0.113.1:5668; 203.0.113.1 is a documentation example, not an address to copy for a real server.
Use the right address for the player’s location
- Players on the same local network: they can use the server computer’s local address and selected port, provided the host firewall permits it.
- Players outside the home: they need the home connection’s public address and the externally forwarded port.
- Players joining a VPS: they use the provider-assigned public or remote address and the selected port opened in the provider and host firewalls.
Do not give remote players a private local address such as a home-only address; it is not routable from the public internet.

Why friends cannot connect
“Can’t connect to host”
Work through the checks in this order:
- Confirm the dedicated server is running and has started a map with
host <mapname> [mode]. - Run
config portand write down the value it reports. - Compare that value with the player’s address, the router’s external and internal destinations, and every firewall rule.
- Confirm that both TCP and UDP are allowed at the host firewall and, for a home server, the router.
- For a VPS, check the provider’s cloud firewall as well as the operating-system firewall.
- Verify that the router rule points to the server computer’s current local IP.
- Have the player retry with the correct public or remote address and port.
If any one layer still contains 6567 while the application is listening on 5668, the connection will be sent to the wrong endpoint. Correct the mismatch before changing unrelated game settings.
“Address already in use” or a port-in-use message
Another process may already be bound to the selected port, or a previous server process may still be running. On a system with the lsof utility, inspect the port with:
lsof -i :<port>Replace <port> with the value you selected, such as 5668. Identify the process, then stop the stale process only if you are certain it is safe to do so. Alternatively, choose another unused port and repeat the configuration, firewall, forwarding, and client steps with that new value.

This pattern usually means the application and local firewall are working, while the public path is incomplete. Recheck the router’s destination IP, external port, and TCP/UDP selection. A dedicated server without router forwarding is reachable only by clients on the local network, as the Mindustry Wiki notes.
The server is not reachable even on the same network
Check that a game is being hosted, that the client is using the server computer’s current local IP, and that the host firewall allows the selected port. If the console reports a different port than the client entry, update the entry or the server configuration so they match.

When a home server is appropriate
Home hosting can be practical when the hardware is already available and the group is comfortable managing a router and firewall. It requires a stable local destination and a forwarding rule, and the official wiki cautions that exposing a residential public IP has security implications.

When a VPS is more convenient
A remote server avoids residential router forwarding and can stay online independently of your desktop session. You still need to open the selected port in the provider’s firewall and on the server’s operating-system firewall. Administration shifts from a home router to the provider’s control panel and remote machine.
Do not confuse the in-game host with a dedicated server
The in-game Host Multiplayer Game option is intended for small LAN sessions and exists only while the game remains open. A dedicated server is a separate process designed to continue hosting without the full game client open.
Security and exposure considerations
Port forwarding makes a service on your home network reachable from the internet. The Mindustry Wiki warns that exposing a home public IP has security implications. Forward only the port you need, keep the server software and operating system maintained, and remove an old forwarding rule when the server is retired.
If you do not want to expose a residential address, the wiki suggests a VPN or a webhost/cloud service as alternatives. A VPN changes how invited players reach the server; a cloud host places the public endpoint away from the home network. Whichever option you choose, its firewall still needs the selected Mindustry port open for TCP and UDP.
Changing 6567 to another number can avoid a collision with an existing service, but it is not a substitute for access control or firewall hygiene. Treat the chosen value as a coordination setting, not as a security boundary.
Optional: use a DNS SRV record
A DNS SRV record can let players use a subdomain instead of typing an address with a port. MindustryServerList documents the _mindustry service with protocol tcp, a target host, and the selected port. This is optional; direct entry as <public-ip>:<port> works without DNS.
If you change the server from 6567 to another value, update the SRV record’s port as well. The record cannot repair a closed firewall or missing router rule; it only supplies a name-to-host-and-port mapping after the network path is available.
Port-change checklist
- Run
config portand note the active value. - If changing it, run
config port <new-port>and verify again withconfig port. - Start a map with
host <mapname> [mode]. - Allow the selected port for TCP and UDP in the operating-system firewall.
- For home hosting, forward the selected port to the server computer’s stable local IP for TCP and UDP.
- For VPS hosting, allow the selected port in the provider’s cloud firewall and the host firewall.
- Give players the public or remote address in
<ip-address>:<port>form. - If a connection fails, compare the value in every layer before investigating other causes.
- If the port is already in use, inspect it with
lsof -i :<port>and stop a confirmed stale process or choose another unused value.
Sources and documented examples
The Mindustry Wiki’s current documentation, accessed October 15, 2026, identifies 6567 as the default and instructs administrators to allow it for TCP and UDP. It also explains that, without port forwarding, a dedicated server is limited to local-network clients and warns about exposing a residential public IP. A Hetzner Community tutorial demonstrates reading the default, changing it with config port 5668, verifying 5668, and updating firewall rules; its console transcript is dated August 7, 2024. MindustryServerList documents the optional _mindustry SRV service. The numbers in these examples are configuration values, not performance measurements or guarantees of connection quality.
