Most Minecraft 1.21 potions are brewed in two stages: turn Water Bottles into Awkward Potions with Nether Wart, then add the reagent for the effect you want. Potion of Weakness is the main standard exception because it is brewed directly from a Water Bottle.

This guide covers the Brewing Stand interface, every core 1.21 recipe, the four new potion effects, duration and strength modifiers, splash and lingering potions, Bedrock command data values, and the fixes for common brewing mistakes. Recipes are broadly shared between Java Edition 1.21 and the Bedrock 1.21.x line, but fuel behavior and command syntax differ by edition.

How to use a Brewing Stand

  1. Interact with a Brewing Stand to open the Brewing Stand interface.
  2. Place up to three Water Bottles or valid potions in the three bottle slots.
  3. Put the reagent for the next brewing stage in the ingredient slot at the top.
  4. In Java Edition, place Blaze Powder in the fuel slot. One Blaze Powder supplies 20 brewing operations.

The stand brews all valid bottles that are present. Empty bottle slots do not prevent the other slots from working. Fuel is consumed only when a valid brewing operation begins, not while the stand is idle. Vanilla Minecraft does not provide a recipe book inside the Brewing Stand, so you must know the recipe or consult a guide.

For Bedrock recipe definitions, a brewing recipe is an input potion, a reagent, and an output potion registered for the brewing_stand system. See the official Bedrock brewing recipe documentation.

The basic brewing chain

For most effect potions, follow this order:

  1. Fill Glass Bottles with water to make Water Bottles.
  2. Use Nether Wart on the Water Bottles to make Awkward Potions.
  3. Use the effect-specific reagent on the Awkward Potions.
  4. Optionally modify the finished potion with Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Fermented Spider Eye, Gunpowder, or Dragon’s Breath.

Do not use a Water Bottle for an ordinary effect recipe. The effect reagent generally requires an Awkward Potion. Potion of Weakness is the important direct-from-water exception.

All primary potion recipes in Minecraft 1.21

Input Reagent Result
Water Bottle Nether Wart Awkward Potion
Water Bottle Redstone Dust Mundane Potion
Water Bottle Glowstone Dust Thick Potion
Water Bottle Fermented Spider Eye Potion of Weakness
Awkward Potion Sugar Potion of Swiftness
Awkward Potion Rabbit’s Foot Potion of Leaping
Awkward Potion Blaze Powder Potion of Strength
Awkward Potion Magma Cream Potion of Fire Resistance
Awkward Potion Pufferfish Potion of Water Breathing
Awkward Potion Golden Carrot Potion of Night Vision
Awkward Potion Ghast Tear Potion of Regeneration
Awkward Potion Spider Eye Potion of Poison
Awkward Potion Glistering Melon Slice Potion of Healing
Awkward Potion Turtle Shell Potion of the Turtle Master
Awkward Potion Phantom Membrane Potion of Slow Falling
Awkward Potion Breeze Rod Potion of Wind Charging
Awkward Potion Cobweb Potion of Weaving
Awkward Potion Slime Block Potion of Oozing
Awkward Potion Stone Potion of Infestation

The last four recipes are the 1.21 additions associated with Trial Chambers and their new effects. They still require an Awkward Potion first; they are not made by combining Nether Wart directly with the special ingredient.

The four new 1.21 potion effects

  • Wind Charging: brew an Awkward Potion with a Breeze Rod.
  • Weaving: brew an Awkward Potion with a Cobweb.
  • Oozing: brew an Awkward Potion with a Slime Block.
  • Infestation: brew an Awkward Potion with Stone.

For Infestation, use the documented Stone reagent. Do not substitute Cobblestone or describe the recipe as using any stone block.

Potion modifiers

Extend duration with Redstone Dust

Add Redstone Dust to a compatible drinkable potion to create its longer-duration version. Redstone and Glowstone are alternative modifiers: a potion normally cannot be made both longer and stronger through successive brewing.

Increase strength with Glowstone Dust

Add Glowstone Dust to a compatible potion when an amplified form exists. Not every potion has a stronger variant, so an invalid modifier does not create a new result.

Corrupt or convert with Fermented Spider Eye

Fermented Spider Eye only works on defined conversion paths. It does not arbitrarily alter every potion.

  • Night Vision → Invisibility
  • Invisibility → Night Vision
  • Swiftness → Slowness
  • Leaping → Slowness
  • Healing → Harming
  • Poison → Harming
  • Strength → Weakness

The potion’s duration, amplifier, and splash or lingering state must remain compatible with the conversion.

Make a Splash Potion with Gunpowder

Place a normal drinkable potion in the stand and add Gunpowder. The result is its Splash Potion version, which can be thrown at yourself or other entities.

Make a Lingering Potion with Dragon’s Breath

Dragon’s Breath must be applied to a Splash Potion, not directly to an ordinary drinkable potion. The result is a Lingering Potion that leaves an area effect where it lands.

Potions that are not ordinary Brewing Stand recipes

Potion of Decay exists in Bedrock Edition but is not a normal survival brewing recipe; it can be obtained through commands or the Creative inventory. Potion of Luck and Potion of the Bad Omen likewise are not standard Brewing Stand recipes. Their availability comes from commands, generated content, or status-effect mechanics rather than the normal potion tree.

Bedrock commands and potion data values

Bedrock Edition requires cheats to be enabled before using commands. In the world-creation flow, open the world-creation sidebar, select Cheats, and enable them.

Microsoft’s current Bedrock documentation gives this command for a regular Potion of Invisibility:

/give @p potion 1 7

Here, @p targets the nearest player, potion is the item, 1 is the quantity, and 7 is the Bedrock data value for regular Invisibility. The documented table applies to Bedrock version 1.21.111 and should not be treated as a Java identifier.

Potion Bedrock data value
Water 0
Awkward 4
Invisibility 7
Swiftness 14
Strength 31
Decay 36
Wind Charging 43
Weaving 44
Oozing 45
Infestation 46

These numeric values are Bedrock-specific. Java Edition uses different modern command and item-component syntax, so do not copy the Bedrock command into Java and expect the same result. See Microsoft’s Bedrock custom potion documentation for the version-qualified table.

Why a potion will not brew

  • The stand is idle: in Java, check that Blaze Powder is in the fuel slot, then verify the bottles and top ingredient are valid.
  • You used Water Bottles for an effect recipe: brew Nether Wart first to create Awkward Potions. Weakness is the main exception.
  • You used the wrong Infestation reagent: use Stone, not Cobblestone.
  • You tried to stack effects: potions cannot be arbitrarily combined to produce multiple effects. Brewing follows fixed input-and-output recipes.
  • You used an incompatible modifier: Redstone, Glowstone, Fermented Spider Eye, Gunpowder, and Dragon’s Breath each have defined valid inputs.
  • Only some bottles changed: empty slots are ignored; the stand brews the valid bottles that are present.

Brewing Stand automation

Hoppers can feed ingredients into the Brewing Stand from above and interact with bottle and output slots from the sides and bottom. Hopper placement and timing matter: an incorrectly positioned hopper can feed the wrong ingredient or remove bottles before the intended stage completes. Test an automated layout with a small batch before loading valuable ingredients.
