In January 2015, reports said that account details for more than 1,800 Minecraft players had been posted online in plaintext. Microsoft said Mojang’s service had not been breached; the reported explanation was that credentials had been obtained elsewhere, with phishing cited and malware raised as another possibility.
What was reported in January 2015?
The Guardian reported on 21 January 2015 that a list containing more than 1,800 Minecraft players’ account details had appeared online in plaintext. The publication prompted concern that Mojang’s systems had been hacked, but the report described Microsoft’s position that Mojang’s service was not compromised. The Guardian’s report did not provide an independently verified count based on the original dataset.
Was Mojang hacked?
Microsoft said the credentials had been obtained by other means before they were published, rather than through a breach of Mojang’s service. Phishing was reported as the explanation, and malware was mentioned as another possible way credentials could have been collected. Neither the available reports nor Microsoft’s attributed response identifies which method applied to each account.
GameSpot attributed this statement to Mojang representative Owen Hill: “No-one has gained access to the Mojang mainframe.” This is Hill’s remark as reported by GameSpot, not an independently checked company statement. GameSpot’s 25 January 2015 coverage described a phishing scam and reported that affected users were emailed and their passwords reset.

What should players take from the incident?
This was a historical credential exposure, not evidence that Minecraft accounts are newly being leaked or that the event is ongoing. The reporting supports a distinction between a breach of Mojang’s systems and credentials stolen from users through phishing or potentially malware; it does not establish a route for every account.
- Do not treat “Mojang hacked” as the established cause: Microsoft said Mojang’s service had not been breached.
- Do not assume every affected player lost credentials in the same way; the reports do not map an individual method to each account.
- The original credential list is not needed to understand the incident. Do not search for or circulate exposed account data.
What did Mojang do at the time?
GameSpot reported that affected users were contacted by email and passwords reset, and that a precautionary password change was suggested. Those are accounts of the response in 2015; they do not document today’s account-recovery process.
