Axolotl colors and what makes them useful
Minecraft axolotls are aquatic mobs that can also spend a short time on land. Mojang identifies five colors: blue, cyan, gold, wild (brown), and leucistic (pink). Color does not change the capture method or the food required for breeding, but it matters if you are collecting a particular variant or trying to establish a blue line.

The important distinction is that blue is not simply another color you can reliably find while exploring. The farming tutorial records a 1/1200 chance for a baby axolotl to be blue when breeding. That makes a blue axolotl a long-term breeding objective rather than a normal cave find.
Where axolotls spawn
Lush cave biomes
Search lush caves. Axolotls spawn underwater around clay blocks, so a cave with water pools and exposed clay is a better target than a generic underground lake. Their spawning location is biome-specific: finding water elsewhere does not make axolotls appear there.

Use azalea trees as a clue, not a guarantee
An azalea tree on the surface can point toward a lush cave below, making it a useful place to start digging or exploring. It is not a guaranteed indicator, however. The farming tutorial cautions that azalea trees do not always generate above lush caves, so an azalea-free area can still conceal the biome you need.
What to look for underground
- A lush cave biome rather than an ordinary cave.
- Submerged areas where clay blocks form the floor or banks.
- Enough open water for axolotls to spawn and move around.
- A safe route back to the surface before you begin collecting.
If you are building a collection area, the natural-generation farm described by the tutorial uses a dark water room inside a lush-cave biome, with clay beneath the spawning space. Darkness, water and clay provide the conditions for repeated natural generation; the room itself does not replace the biome requirement.

- Prepare before descending. Bring at least one water bucket for each capture run, plus enough supplies to light or secure the route around the cave. You need the bucket to contain water when you capture an axolotl.
- Locate a lush cave. Follow underground water and clay, or investigate a surface azalea tree while remembering that the tree clue is imperfect.
- Check submerged clay areas. Search the water around clay blocks rather than scanning every dry tunnel. Axolotls are aquatic and are easiest to spot in open pools.
- Secure the approach. Block dangerous side passages, create a safe standing platform and keep an escape route to the surface. A successful find is not useful if you lose the mob or die before transporting it.
- Capture immediately. Once you see an axolotl, switch to a water-filled bucket and use it on the mob before it wanders into a deeper or hazardous section of the cave.
For a farm, move more than 24 blocks away from the spawning room after you have built it. The tutorial identifies that distance as the point at which spawning can begin. Return to collect the new mobs, then repeat the cycle from the same safe position.
How to catch an axolotl in a bucket
Capture procedure
- Fill a bucket with water.
- Hold the water bucket and aim at the axolotl.
- Use the bucket on the axolotl.
- Confirm that the item in your inventory is a bucket of axolotl.
The bucket must contain water when you use it. An empty bucket cannot perform this capture. A bucket of axolotl stores the mob as an item, so you can carry it through tunnels, across the surface and over long distances without trying to keep the animal swimming behind you.

Transport and release
At your destination, place water in the enclosure before releasing the axolotl. Mojang notes that axolotls can live on land temporarily but must return to water periodically or they die. A dry pen is therefore not a safe permanent home. Make the enclosure deep and enclosed enough that the mob cannot immediately wander out, and keep the water accessible from the point where you empty the bucket.
Use buckets for every long-distance move. Carrying an uncontained axolotl across land exposes it to the periodic need for water and makes it easier to lose in caves, ravines or uneven terrain. Bucket storage also lets you sort colors later instead of building a large holding area beside the original cave.

Water first, decoration second
Fill the enclosure before releasing any axolotl. The animal should enter a connected water area rather than land on a dry floor. If you are making separate pens for colors, test each pen with water before transferring the animals from their buckets.
Prevent escapes
- Use solid walls around the pool and cover openings that lead to caves or exterior drops.
- Keep the water contained so the axolotls cannot crawl onto a large dry platform and remain stranded.
- Place the breeding pen close to your storage and tropical-fish supply; repeated trips are part of blue-variant farming.
- Interact with captured axolotls through feeding or breeding so they do not despawn, as advised by the farming tutorial.
Separate breeders from display animals
A practical layout has one water room for active breeders, another for babies and overflow, and a display section for the colors you want to keep. Separation prevents accidental breeding, makes cooldown timing easier to track and gives you a controlled place to expand a blue line once you obtain one.

What axolotls eat for breeding
Breeding requires buckets of tropical fish. Mojang’s official article describes tropical fish as the axolotl’s favorite food and specifically notes that the fish must also be transported in a bucket. An ordinary tropical-fish item does not put axolotls into love mode for this purpose.
Prepare the food
- Obtain tropical fish.
- Place each fish in a bucket so you have buckets of tropical fish rather than loose fish items.
- Bring at least two bucketed fish to the adult axolotls you want to breed.
Because the food is consumed as part of the interaction, carry extra buckets when you plan a large breeding session. Keep the fish supply near the pen to reduce travel between attempts.
How to breed axolotls step by step
- Capture two adults. Use water buckets in a lush cave or collect adults from an existing enclosure.
- Move both adults into a water pen. Confirm that the pen is filled before releasing them.
- Hold a bucket of tropical fish. Select the bucketed fish, not an ordinary tropical-fish item.
- Use it on the first adult. The axolotl enters love mode.
- Use a bucket of tropical fish on the second adult. Once both are ready, a baby axolotl appears.
- Wait through the breeding cooldown. The cooldown is five minutes in Java Edition and one minute in Bedrock Edition.
- Move or feed the baby as needed. A baby takes about 20 minutes to become an adult, and feeding can accelerate its growth.

The cooldown applies to the parents after a successful breeding. It does not mean a baby is ready to breed immediately; the baby must first mature. Plan separate adult and juvenile pools if you want a steady production line.
How to get a blue axolotl
Understand the odds
The farming tutorial gives a 1/1200 chance that a baby axolotl will be blue when you breed two adults. Each attempt is independent, so a blue baby can appear early or take many more attempts. The 1/1200 figure is a probability, not a guarantee that exactly 1,200 babies will produce one blue axolotl.

Run a repeatable breeding loop
- Keep several adult axolotls in a water pen rather than relying on one pair.
- Stock buckets of tropical fish before starting a session.
- Breed every available adult pair, recording which adults have already been used if your pen is large.
- Move babies to a juvenile pool so they do not crowd the breeders.
- Check new adults and isolate any blue axolotl immediately.
More breeding pairs give you more attempts per cooldown cycle, while the shorter one-minute cooldown in Bedrock Edition allows faster repeat sessions than the five-minute Java Edition cooldown. Neither edition changes the stated 1/1200 blue-baby probability.

When you obtain a blue axolotl, breed it with another axolotl. The tutorial records a 50% chance for a baby to inherit a parent’s color when one parent is blue. This does not make every baby blue, but it is dramatically more productive than continuing to breed only non-blue adults at the 1/1200 rate. Keep the original blue parent protected in a dedicated pen and use its offspring to build a larger blue population.

Both approaches use the same capture and breeding mechanics. The better choice depends on whether you need a few ordinary axolotls or many breeding attempts for blue.

Farm collection cycle
- Build the dark water room in a lush-cave biome.
- Put clay beneath the spawning space.
- Move more than 24 blocks away so spawning can begin.
- Return and capture spawned axolotls with water buckets.
- Transfer them to your water enclosure and interact with them through feeding or breeding to prevent despawning.
A farm does not eliminate the need for buckets or tropical fish. It reduces the amount of time spent searching for new mobs once the spawning room is operating.

Troubleshooting common problems
No axolotls appear
- Verify that the area is a lush cave biome.
- Look around underwater clay rather than only in open cave air.
- Move more than 24 blocks from a player-built spawning room and wait.
- Do not treat an azalea tree as proof that a lush cave is directly below.
The bucket will not capture one
- Fill the bucket with water first.
- Aim at the axolotl itself and use the bucket on the mob.
- Check your inventory for a bucket of axolotl after the interaction.
Breeding does nothing
- Use buckets of tropical fish; loose tropical-fish items are not the required breeding food.
- Feed both adult axolotls, not a baby and an adult.
- Wait until the edition-specific cooldown has ended.
- Make sure both animals are in a water enclosure where you can interact with them.
An axolotl dies after transport
Release it into water immediately. Axolotls can spend time on land, but they must return to water periodically or they die. Carrying the mob in a bucket avoids this risk during the journey; the destination enclosure must still contain water.
Blue breeding feels impossibly slow
That is expected at a 1/1200 chance per baby. Increase the number of adult pairs, keep tropical-fish buckets ready, use the correct edition cooldown when planning sessions, and preserve every blue axolotl you obtain. After the first blue parent exists, the 50% inheritance chance makes expansion substantially more practical.
A practical progression plan
First trip
Find a lush cave, capture two adults and bring them to a prepared water pen. This gives you a renewable starting population instead of depending on every future expedition.
Early breeding
Secure buckets of tropical fish, breed the adults and separate the babies. The 20-minute maturation period means that a juvenile pool prevents confusion about which animals are ready for another breeding cycle.
Collection phase
Use additional adults to breed for ordinary colors while maintaining a safe reserve. If you later build a farm, keep the original enclosure as a backup in case the spawning room is inconvenient to access.
Blue-variant phase
Switch from occasional breeding to a repeatable production loop. Build enough water capacity for adults, babies and blue candidates; stock tropical-fish buckets; and isolate the first blue axolotl as soon as it appears. Breed that parent with other adults to take advantage of the 50% color-inheritance chance.
