To make a standard Minecraft bed, combine three wool blocks of one color with three wood planks of one type in a crafting table: wool fills the middle row and planks fill the bottom row. Place the bed in a safe Overworld location and use it. When the game accepts the interaction, it displays “Respawn point set.”

The bed’s saved location is not carried along if you move or break the bed. A missing, blocked, or unusable bed cannot receive you after death, so establish a new point whenever you relocate. Never use a standard bed in the Nether or the End: it explodes instead of working normally. Nether travelers need a respawn anchor; the End has no normal bed-based spawn-setting route.

A standard bed has two related functions in the Overworld. It is a place to sleep, and an accepted interaction records the bed’s location as your respawn point. The second function is the important one when you are building away from the original world spawn: after death, the game can return you to that recorded location instead of the world’s default spawn.
The point is tied to the placed bed and to whether that bed is still usable. It is not a portable marker in your inventory. Treat the bed as a fixed piece of infrastructure: the moment you move a base, set a replacement bed at the new site and use it before travelling or taking risks.

Materials and recipe
You need only six ingredients and a crafting table for the standard recipe.

The wool color determines the bed’s color. Mixing colors does not satisfy the standard recipe, so sort your wool before opening the crafting interface. The plank requirement is similarly consistent: choose any plank type, but fill the three bottom-row positions with that same type.

How to craft the bed
- Gather three wool blocks that all share one color.
- Gather three wood planks made from the same wood type.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the three wool blocks across the middle row of the 3×3 crafting grid.
- Place the three matching planks across the bottom row.
- Take the bed from the result slot and put it in your inventory.

In the grid, the wool row sits directly above the plank row. The top row remains empty. If no bed appears in the result slot, check the two common recipe errors first: one wool block is a different color, or one plank is a different type.
How to set your spawn point
Place the bed in the Overworld
Choose a location where you can reach the bed and where there is clear room around and above it. A cramped decorative build can make the saved point unusable or leave you in an unsafe position when you return.
Use the placed bed
Interact with the bed after placing it. In the Overworld, a successful interaction sets the respawn point and the chat confirms it with the exact message “Respawn point set.” Sleeping through the night is not required when the interaction is accepted. Current Java guidance also allows daytime use to set the point even when the player cannot sleep yet, so do not assume that a daytime interaction failed merely because no sleep animation occurs.

Confirm the location before leaving
Read the chat confirmation before you head out. This simple check catches a bed that was not placed where you intended, an interaction that was not accepted, or a recipe-and-placement trip that ended without recording a new point.
Keep the spawn bed usable
The game remembers the bed’s location, not a promise to update that location whenever the block changes. Breaking or moving the bed does not move the saved point. If you die after the original bed has been removed, the old location cannot be used. The same outcome applies when the bed is present but blocked enough to be invalid.
When you relocate a base
- Place the replacement bed at the new base.
- Leave clear space around and above it.
- Use it in the Overworld.
- Wait for “Respawn point set” in chat.
- Only then dismantle or move the old bed.
This order prevents a gap in coverage. If you remove the old bed first and die before activating the new one, the game has no usable bed at the saved location and returns you to world spawn.
Clear the arrival area
Do not place the bed where blocks, furnishings, or a low ceiling can prevent a valid return. The bed needs accessible space at the point where the game would place you. A bed that works for sleeping can still become a poor respawn choice if later construction closes in around it, so recheck the area after expanding a room.
Why beds explode in the Nether and the End
A standard bed is an Overworld item for sleeping and setting a spawn. Using it in the Nether or the End causes an explosion instead of normal sleep. This is intended game behavior, not a random failure or a damaged bed. The detonation can destroy your planned shelter and put the player at immediate risk, so carry a different plan for dimension travel.

The safest rule is simple: never test a standard bed in either dimension. If you want to change your Nether return point, use a respawn anchor, the Nether-specific option for respawning. The End does not offer a normal bed-based way to set a spawn point; a standard bed is therefore not a valid End checkpoint.
Choosing between a bed, a respawn anchor, and the preview Straw Bed
These items should not be treated as interchangeable. The standard bed is the reusable Overworld solution. A respawn anchor is intended for Nether respawning. A separate Straw Bed appears in a 2026 Java snapshot and is preview content, not the wool-and-planks recipe described above.

The snapshot Straw Bed is especially easy to misunderstand. Its presence in a preview does not replace the standard recipe, and using it once does not create the checkpoint that a normal Overworld bed creates. If you are following a guide for the released wool-and-planks bed, use the standard recipe and verify that your game is not showing a separate preview item.
Bed and spawn troubleshooting
No “Respawn point set” message appears
- Confirm that you are in the Overworld. A bed cannot perform its normal function in the Nether or End.
- Make sure the bed is actually placed and that your interaction was accepted.
- Check the recipe and placement if you crafted a replacement: three same-color wool blocks, three same-type planks, wool in the middle row, and planks in the bottom row.
- In Java, remember that daytime use can still set the point even when sleeping is unavailable. Lack of a sleep cycle is not by itself proof of failure.
You died and returned to world spawn
The saved bed location was unusable at the moment of death. The usual causes covered by the game’s bed rules are that the bed was broken, moved without activating a replacement, or blocked so it could not provide a valid return position. Go back to the current base, clear the bed’s surroundings, use the bed again, and wait for the confirmation before continuing.

Rearrange the room so there is clear space around and above the bed. Construction that leaves only a narrow gap can interfere with a valid respawn or place you somewhere dangerous on arrival. After changing the room, use the bed again to establish the location under the new layout.

The bed exploded
An explosion on use means the bed was used in the Nether or the End, where standard beds do not provide normal sleep or spawn setting. Do not place another standard bed there as a test. In the Nether, switch to a respawn anchor; in the End, plan around the absence of a normal bed-based spawn route.
Practical spawn-management checklists
Before leaving an Overworld base
- Is the bed in the Overworld?
- Is there clear room around and above it?
- Did chat show “Respawn point set” after the last relocation or room change?
- Is the bed still present and reachable?
Before dismantling a bed
- Place a replacement first.
- Use the replacement and confirm the message.
- Only then break or move the previous bed.
Before entering another dimension
- Leave the standard bed in the Overworld rather than attempting to use it as a Nether or End checkpoint.
- For Nether travel, prepare a respawn anchor as the dimension-specific alternative.
- Do not count on a bed-based spawn route in the End.
These checks separate two ideas that are often confused: a bed can be physically nearby, yet the saved point can still refer to an older location; and a bed can be perfectly crafted, yet unusable in a dimension where beds explode.
Common planning mistakes
Mixing wool colors
Players sometimes place three wool blocks that look similar but are not the same color. The standard recipe requires one color across the full wool row. Sort the blocks before opening the table so the result slot gives an immediate answer.
Mixing plank types
Any wood type is acceptable, but the three plank positions should use the same type. Keeping one stack selected while filling the bottom row avoids an accidental mismatch.
Assuming a moved bed carries its spawn point
A bed is not a linked compass. Picking it up and placing it elsewhere does not transfer the previously recorded location. Activate it again at the new site and confirm the chat message.

Building over the bed after activation
A point that was valid when set can become unusable after walls, storage, or a low ceiling are added. Treat the bed’s clearance as part of the base design, not as temporary empty space.

Taking an Overworld recipe into the Nether
The wool-and-planks recipe remains correct, but the item’s behavior depends on the dimension. Crafting a bed for an Overworld home does not make it safe to use in the Nether or End.
Version and edition notes
The instructions above describe the standard wool-and-planks bed. A 2026 Java snapshot also describes a separate Straw Bed. That snapshot item is preview content, has one use, and does not set a spawn point; it should not be substituted for the standard bed in a released-game guide.
Java guidance also explicitly notes that an accepted daytime interaction can set the point even when sleeping is not currently possible. If your edition or version presents a different interface, use the visible confirmation as the practical test: the bed is ready as a respawn location when the game reports “Respawn point set.”
Quick decision guide
- Need a home checkpoint in the Overworld? Craft the standard bed, place it with clearance, use it, and verify the chat message.
- Moving that home? Activate the replacement before removing the old bed.
- Need a Nether checkpoint? Do not use a standard bed; use a respawn anchor.
- In the End? A normal bed-based spawn-setting route is not available.
- Seeing a Straw Bed in a 2026 Java snapshot? Remember that it is preview content, one-use, and does not set spawn.
Following that sequence keeps the crafting recipe, dimension rules, and saved-location behavior aligned: the right materials create the item, the right dimension determines whether it works, and a clear, activated bed determines whether it can receive you after death.
