What players often call Minecraft Bedrock “modpacks” are officially called add-ons. They use resource packs to change visuals and sounds, behavior packs to change mechanics and entity behavior, or both together. Minecraft’s documented route is to get add-ons through the in-game Marketplace and activate them in a world’s pack settings.
What Bedrock add-ons change
Minecraft describes add-ons as content that can add custom blocks, items, mobs, recipes, and other features to new or existing Bedrock worlds. A resource pack typically changes how the game looks or sounds; a behavior pack can change game rules, entity behavior, or mechanics. One add-on may include either type or both. Minecraft Help explains what add-ons can add and how to activate them.

Bedrock add-ons are not the same thing as Java Edition mods. Minecraft’s support materials distinguish add-ons for Bedrock from mods for Java Edition. This guide covers the official Marketplace and world-settings workflow, not third-party downloads or platform-specific sideloading.
Get add-ons from the Marketplace
Minecraft Help says Marketplace add-ons can be bought on platforms that run Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. For content you already have access to, open Marketplace → My Library, select the item, and download it or choose the available action. Minecraft’s Marketplace FAQ describes library access and Marketplace Pass content.

Marketplace Pass access is conditional, not permanent ownership: the item must remain in the subscription catalog, the subscription must remain active, and you must be signed in to the account that has the subscription.
Activate add-ons in a new or existing world
For a new single-player world
- Create a world and open its Resource Packs or Behavior Packs settings.
- Activate the add-ons you want in the corresponding section. If an add-on includes both pack types, activate each as applicable.
- Create the world.
For an existing single-player world
- Open the world’s edit screen.
- In Resource Packs or Behavior Packs, activate the desired add-ons.
- Return to the world and play.
For a Realm
- The Realm owner edits the world slot.
- Activate the desired add-ons in the relevant pack settings.
- Confirm the changes and allow the world to upload.
Players connecting to the Realm from a Bedrock device automatically download and apply the Realm’s active add-ons. The official activation instructions cover these world and Realm workflows: Activate Add-Ons in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.

Choose packs that suit the world
Before activating a pack, check what it changes and whether that change fits the world you plan to use. A resource pack may be the right choice for a visual or audio refresh; a behavior pack is the relevant type when the goal is new mechanics or changed entity behavior.
- Check the world: confirm the pack supports the type of world or Realm you intend to use.
- Look for overlap: packs that affect the same assets or behavior may conflict, especially when several are active or when adding them to a Marketplace world.
- Check version information: compare the creator’s stated version support with your current Bedrock version. The official sources do not provide a universal, current compatibility matrix.
Troubleshoot conflicts or missing content
Minecraft warns that add-ons can cause problems when they conflict with other add-ons or when a resource or behavior pack has an issue. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends working through changes methodically rather than disabling everything at once. See Minecraft Help’s add-on troubleshooting steps.

- Restart Minecraft and install any available game update.
- Disable one pack at a time to identify whether a particular add-on is involved.
- If packs affect the same asset, change their order and test again.
- Try reactivating a disabled pack. If a pack is missing or corrupted, redownload it.
- Test the add-on in a new world to help determine whether the issue is tied to the existing world or its other packs.
Back up before disabling packs
Make a backup before removing add-ons from a world. Minecraft’s disable guidance says that disabling an add-on removes its mobs from the world and replaces its blocks with default blocks. Template and adventure worlds may also depend on their own packs, so removing packs from those worlds can have additional effects. Minecraft Help’s add-on guidance covers pack conflicts, while its troubleshooting instructions outline ways to isolate problems.
