You can’t plant a dedicated apple-tree sapling in vanilla Minecraft. Instead, grow oak or dark oak trees and collect apples from their leaves. If you want a tree that visibly grows apples, you’ll need custom content such as a datapack.
Can you plant apple trees in vanilla Minecraft?
No. Vanilla Minecraft has no separate apple-tree sapling or apple seeds to plant. Apples come from oak and dark oak leaves, so the vanilla method is to grow those trees and collect their leaf drops.
How to grow trees for apples

Plant oak or dark oak saplings in your world and allow the trees to grow. Ordinary tree farming uses saplings, harvested wood, and replanting to keep a supply of trees available.

Harvest the wood you need. Then break the oak or dark oak leaves, or leave the remaining leaves to decay naturally.

Collect any apples that drop, along with saplings and other leaf drops, and replant saplings for another round.
Minecraft’s official Block of the Week: Leaves article, published August 18, 2017, describes the apple drop as occurring from oak or dark oak leaf blocks. It gives an approximate rate of about one apple per 200 leaf blocks broken—not one apple per tree or a guaranteed schedule. That low chance means a small number of trees may not provide dependable food; you may need to process many leaves. The figure is an approximate description in that article, not an edition-specific guarantee.

Oak or dark oak: which should you use?
Both oak and dark oak leaves can drop apples. The cited Minecraft article does not establish that either type has a better apple-drop probability, so choose based on the saplings and trees available to you rather than expecting one to yield more apples.
What if you want a dedicated apple tree?
That requires custom content. The Gamemode 4 Apple Trees project describes a datapack feature with special apple-bearing leaves. It is not vanilla behavior, and whether it works in a world depends on the custom content being installed and supported in that setup. Don’t assume a dedicated apple tree is present in a standard world.

Why apples are easy to miss while tree farming
Apples are an occasional leaf drop, not a regular product every tree produces. Minecraft’s official article says roughly every 200th oak or dark oak leaf block broken will drop one. Because that is an approximate per-leaf rate, it does not promise a particular number of apples from a tree or a short harvesting session.
For general tree-farming practices such as planting saplings, harvesting wood, and collecting leaf drops, see the Minecraft community tree-farming tutorial. Exact layouts and tree-clearance dimensions can vary with tree form and game edition or version, so this guide does not prescribe a universal farm size.
