A Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server can run on a modest Windows or Ubuntu machine: Mojang lists an Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600 APU or equivalent CPU, 4 GB of RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB of disk space, and broadband internet. The current Linux download requires Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer; supported Windows versions start with Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or Windows Server 2016.

Official requirements at a glance
Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is Mojang’s free, official server software for hosting a multiplayer world for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The following figures are the baseline published on the current Minecraft/Mojang requirements page accessed in 2026.

The requirements do not include an official player-count-to-RAM formula, benchmark chart or guaranteed hardware profile for a particular number of users. Treat 4 GB as the published starting point, then test your own world and leave headroom for the operating system and other services.
How much RAM does a Bedrock server need?
Mojang’s stated requirement is 4 GB of system memory. That number describes the machine requirement for running BDS; it is not a promise that every world, add-on or player load will remain smooth with exactly 4 GB. The server shares memory with Windows or Ubuntu, background services, backups and any monitoring tools running on the same host.

When the 4 GB baseline is reasonable
- A small private world with a limited number of simultaneous players and no unusually heavy add-on set.
- A dedicated machine where the operating system and server are the primary workloads.
- A test or family server where you can observe performance and add resources if needed.
Why extra capacity can be useful
World size, simulation activity, behavior packs, resource packs and concurrent activity can all change the server’s workload. The official documentation does not assign a fixed amount of RAM to each player, so avoid purchasing or advertising a precise “X GB for Y players” rule as if it were guaranteed. If the host begins swapping, pauses during saves or becomes unresponsive while several players explore, the practical remedy is to reduce competing workloads, review add-ons and move to a machine with more memory and CPU capacity.
CPU requirements and headroom
The published processor baseline is an Intel Core i3-3210, an AMD A8-7600 APU or an equivalent CPU. These models identify the minimum class of hardware Mojang supports; they are not a recommendation for every deployment. A newer processor can provide more headroom for world simulation, background tasks and multiple concurrent connections.

Adding memory will not correct a processor that is saturated by simulation or other applications. Conversely, a fast CPU cannot compensate for a host that is constantly paging because it has too little available memory. For a self-hosted installation, check the machine while players are online rather than judging it only by whether the server starts.
Disk space: the 180 MB to 1 GB figure
Mojang lists 180 MB to 1 GB of available disk space. The lower end can cover a minimal installation, while the upper end reflects the space the server package and basic operation may require. Your world, logs, backups and downloaded packs can grow beyond that range over time. Use a drive with enough free capacity for routine backups and for a failed update that temporarily leaves both an old and a new copy of the server files.

An SSD is not listed as a requirement. Storage type is therefore a practical performance choice, not an official prerequisite. Keep the server directory on a reliable, writable volume and include the worlds, behavior_packs and resource_packs directories in your backup plan.
Windows and Ubuntu support
The current download information and Microsoft’s getting-started documentation describe slightly different Linux baselines. The current download page specifies Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for the current Linux server build. A separate Microsoft recommendation mentions Ubuntu Linux 18 or later, as well as Windows 10 version 1703 or later and Windows Server 2016 or later. Because the binary you download today is governed by the current download page, choose Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or a newer LTS release rather than relying on the older Ubuntu 18 wording.

Installing BDS on Windows
BDS is distributed as a ZIP archive. Installation does not use a graphical installer: you extract the archive and launch the server executable from that directory.
- Download the Windows Bedrock Dedicated Server ZIP from the official Minecraft page.
- Create an empty directory dedicated to the server. Avoid extracting into a folder that already contains another BDS version or unrelated files.
- Extract the ZIP archive into that directory.
- Start the server with
bedrock_serverfrom the extracted directory. - Allow the application through Windows Defender when Windows asks which network profile should be permitted. Choose only the profiles appropriate for the networks from which your players will connect.
- Wait for the first startup to finish creating the server’s folders, then stop the process cleanly before copying an existing world into place.
Keep the executable, configuration files and world directories together so updates and backups are predictable. When installing a newer BDS release, preserve a backup of the complete server directory before replacing files.

Installing BDS on Ubuntu
- Install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or a later supported release and apply its normal system updates.
- Download the Linux BDS ZIP archive from the official Minecraft page.
- Create an empty server directory and extract the archive there.
- From inside that directory, start the server with
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server. - Allow inbound traffic through Ubuntu’s firewall using the UFW rules documented in Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server getting-started guide. The default ports are 19132 for
server-portand 19133 forserver-portv6. - Let the first run create the
worlds,behavior_packsandresource_packsdirectories before importing an existing world.
Run the process from its own directory: the LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. prefix tells Linux to find the libraries shipped alongside the executable. If the command is launched from another directory, the server may not find those files.
Network and firewall requirements
A broadband connection is required, but bandwidth alone does not make a server reachable. The host must accept inbound traffic on the configured port, and players must use an address that can reach the machine.

server-port19132 andserver-portv619133. - Firewall: Windows Defender can prompt for permission; Ubuntu installations need the corresponding UFW allow rules from Microsoft’s guide.
- Address: Players on the same LAN normally connect to the server computer’s reachable local IP address. Players outside the LAN need a public address or another routed connection and any required router forwarding.
- Port changes: If you change the server-port setting, clients must use the changed port and the firewall and router rules must match it.
Do not expose a port and assume that the server is working simply because its console is running. Test from the same network and, when remote play is intended, from a network outside the host’s LAN.
Joining from the same PC, LAN and internet
Same Windows machine
Microsoft documents a Windows loopback exception for connecting to a Bedrock server from the same computer. If the local client cannot see the server even though remote devices can, run the documented CheckNetIsolation.exe loopback-exemption command from Microsoft’s instructions, then restart the client and try again.

LAN players
Use the server machine’s reachable LAN IP address and the configured port. Confirm that the Windows network profile or Ubuntu firewall allows the connection and that the server is listening on the expected interface.
Remote players
Remote users need a route to the host: normally a public IP address, a forwarded port on the router and a firewall rule on the server. If the host is behind carrier-grade NAT or another upstream network that does not permit inbound forwarding, ordinary port forwarding may not be enough; use a network arrangement that provides a reachable address.

On its first run, BDS creates three important directories: worlds, behavior_packs and resource_packs. Let initialization complete before importing content. Existing Bedrock worlds can then be copied into the server’s worlds directory.
Stop the server before copying or replacing a world. Keep a dated backup of the original world and configuration, especially before changing the BDS version or enabling packs. A backup made while files are actively being written may be incomplete, so use a clean shutdown as part of the backup procedure.

Version compatibility and updates
The Bedrock client and BDS protocol versions must match. Microsoft notes that minor-version changes commonly affect protocol compatibility and that even patch versions are not guaranteed to remain compatible. An “Outdated Client” message means the client needs updating; an “Outdated Server” message means the server needs updating.
- Record the BDS version currently running and make a backup of the complete server directory.
- Update the server package and start it once without changing world content.
- Update players’ Bedrock clients to the matching release.
- Test connection, world loading and packs before inviting everyone back.
- Keep the previous server files available until the new version has been verified.
Do not assume that a patch update is automatically safe merely because the first three version numbers look similar. The documented compatibility warning applies to patch versions as well.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the BDS files, worlds, packs, configuration and update schedule. It also makes you responsible for the operating system, firewall, router, backups, uptime and protocol coordination. This approach is a good fit when you already have an always-on computer and are comfortable administering Windows or Ubuntu.
Managed Bedrock hosting can remove local operating-system and network administration, but it does not remove the need to verify technical support. Before paying for a service, confirm that it supports Bedrock Dedicated Server rather than only Java Edition, allows the version and packs you need, provides world backups and explains its network limits, geography and pricing. Those terms vary by provider and are not established by Mojang’s requirements page.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The executable will not start: Verify that the archive was extracted to an empty directory, that you are launching from that directory and, on Ubuntu, that you used
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./bedrock_server. - Players cannot connect: Check the server’s configured port, the Windows Defender or UFW rule, the host’s reachable IP address and any router forwarding.
- The same Windows PC cannot join: Apply Microsoft’s documented
CheckNetIsolation.exeloopback exception. - “Outdated Client” or “Outdated Server” appears: Bring the indicated client or BDS installation to a matching protocol version.
- An imported world is missing: Stop BDS, confirm the world was copied into the server’s
worldsdirectory and check that the first-run folder creation completed. - Performance degrades under load: Check CPU and memory usage, close competing applications, review behavior and resource packs, and move to hardware with more headroom if the 4 GB baseline is exhausted.
Choosing a host machine
For a small private server, start with a computer that meets the published CPU, 4 GB RAM and storage requirements, then monitor it during real play. A dedicated machine avoids contention with games, browsers and other services. An always-on host also needs reliable power, operating-system updates and a backup plan.

For a larger or busier world, the correct upgrade is workload-dependent rather than a fixed player-count formula. Prioritize additional RAM when the system is paging, additional CPU capacity when simulation saturates a core, and more storage when worlds and backups approach the available disk space. Keep the official baseline and your measured workload separate when documenting the setup so players understand which figures are guaranteed requirements and which are your operating margin.
Bottom line
The official minimum for Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server is modest: an i3-3210, A8-7600 or equivalent CPU, 4 GB RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage and broadband internet. Use Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer for the current Linux build, or a supported Windows 10/Windows Server 2016-or-newer edition. The work that most often determines success is outside the minimum specification: opening the correct port, using a reachable IP address, initializing and backing up world folders, and keeping the client and server on matching versions.
