Minecraft has several different “book” items, and each has a separate job. Craft a book from paper and leather; add a feather and ink sac to make a Book and Quill; sign it to create a persistent written book; use an enchanted book with an anvil to transfer an enchantment; surround an enchanting table with up to 15 ordinary bookshelves for stronger offers; and use chiseled bookshelves as six-slot storage rather than as enchanting-power blocks.

This guide explains every step, the materials and experience each route needs, the difference between the two bookshelf blocks, and the edition or version details that can change interfaces and villager trades.

The five book-related items and blocks

“Books” in Minecraft can mean an ordinary crafting ingredient, a writing tool, an enchantment carrier, or one of two bookshelf blocks. Identifying the object first prevents wasted materials and incorrect room designs.

Object Main purpose What you need
Book Crafting ingredient for Book and Quill, bookshelves and other progression recipes Paper and leather
Book and Quill Write notes, rules, coordinates, journals and instructions One book, one feather and one ink sac
Written book Signed, persistent text that can be stored, copied or displayed A completed Book and Quill that has been signed
Enchanted book Holds an enchantment until it is transferred to a compatible item Obtained through enchanting, loot or a librarian trade; applied with an anvil
Bookshelf Raises the available enchanting-table levels when correctly placed Six books and six sturdy planks
Chiseled bookshelf Stores six book-family items and interacts with redstone and hoppers Six sturdy planks and three slabs

Ordinary bookshelves and chiseled bookshelves are not interchangeable. The former provide enchanting-table power; the latter provide compact storage and automation.

How to craft a normal book

Ingredients and recipe

You need three paper and one piece of leather. Arrange the paper in a row in a crafting grid and place the leather in the remaining slot pattern used by the recipe. The result is one book. The recipe is shapeless, so the four ingredients can occupy any four crafting-grid positions.

Getting paper

Craft paper from sugar cane. Sugar cane grows beside water, so a small shoreline farm is usually the most reliable early source. Harvest the upper sections and leave the bottom block planted so the cane regrows. Cartographer chests and other generated structures can also supply paper, but farming is more dependable for large bookshelf projects.

Getting leather

Cows, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas and hoglins can provide leather when killed, with drops affected by the Looting enchantment. Cows are generally the easiest renewable source: breed two with wheat, then harvest the herd later. Some generated chests can contain leather, but chest contents depend on edition and version.

What a book unlocks

The normal book is the foundation for several progression paths. You combine it with a feather and ink sac for a Book and Quill, use three books in a bookshelf recipe, and use a book as the blank target when enchanting directly at an enchanting table. Books are therefore worth producing before you have a specific writing or enchanting project in mind.

How to make and use a Book and Quill

Crafting the writable item

  1. Craft a normal book from paper and leather.
  2. Obtain one feather, commonly from chickens or parrots, and one ink sac, commonly from squids or glow squids.
  3. Combine the book, feather and ink sac in any crafting-grid arrangement to create a Book and Quill.

The Book and Quill is the writable form. It is not the same as a signed written book: until you finish and sign it, the text remains an editable draft.

Useful things to write

  • Coordinates: Record a base, portal, mine entrance or stronghold location.
  • Build notes: Keep material lists, room dimensions and redstone wiring plans near a construction site.
  • Server rules: Explain claim boundaries, community projects or trading procedures.
  • Role-play journals: Keep a character diary, expedition log or historical record.
  • Instructions: Leave a step-by-step guide for new players at a spawn area or shared base.

Page capacity and interface details can differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, so check the controls shown by your current release rather than relying on a different edition’s key bindings.

Signing turns the draft into a written book

When the text is complete, use the book’s sign-and-close control, enter a title and confirm. Minecraft then creates a signed written book with an author and a fixed text record. That persistence makes signed books appropriate for archives, instructions and multiplayer libraries. A signed book is a separate item from the unfinished Book and Quill; keep the original draft if you expect to revise the text.

Displaying a book on a lectern

A lectern can hold one written book or one Book and Quill. Mojang’s official lectern documentation states: “Lecterns, when placed into the world, will hold a single written book or book and quill.” Place the lectern, use it to insert the book, and players can open it without taking the displayed copy. This works well for a library, map room, welcome desk, community notice board or multiplayer rule station.

How enchanted books work

What an enchanted book is

An enchanted book stores one or more enchantments without being attached to a tool, weapon, armor piece or other target. It is a transfer item, not a stronger weapon by itself. The enchantment can be moved only to a compatible item, and the anvil determines whether the combination is legal.

Route 1: Enchant at an enchanting table

An enchanting table accepts an enchantable item or a book, lapis lazuli and player experience. Place the target in the left slot, put lapis in the second slot, and select one of the offered enchantments. The displayed levels are the experience requirement for that choice, not a promise that the item will receive only the visible enchantment; additional compatible enchantments may be added by the game.

Enchanting a blank book can produce an enchanted book, but the result is random within the table’s eligible enchantments. If you need a particular enchantment, repeatedly enchanting inexpensive books or items can be costly, so many players combine table use with trading and exploration.

Route 2: Buy from a librarian villager

Librarian villagers can offer enchanted books in exchange for emeralds. Their available trades, prices and enchantment levels are version-sensitive, and villager mechanics differ between Java and Bedrock. If a librarian’s offer does not suit your plan, verify the current trade rules for your edition before investing in a large trading hall. This route avoids spending lapis on every attempt but requires access to villagers and a renewable emerald supply.

Route 3: Find or obtain enchanted books elsewhere

Enchanted books can also appear through generated loot and other game systems. Exact structures, chest contents and probabilities change by edition and release, so treat a remembered loot table as a guide rather than a guarantee. Keep valuable books in a secure chest until you have the intended target item.

Applying an enchanted book with an anvil

Microsoft’s official documentation describes the anvil method this way: “Using an anvil: Players can combine an item with an enchanted book or with another identical item that has a different enchantment.” In practice:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place an anvil and open it.
  2. Put the weapon, tool, armor piece or other compatible item in the first slot.
  3. Put the enchanted book in the second slot.
  4. Check the output slot and the displayed experience cost.
  5. Take the result if the enchantment is compatible and the cost is affordable.

An anvil can also merge two compatible items or two compatible enchanted books. Conflicting enchantments, an incompatible item type, insufficient experience or an excessive accumulated anvil cost can prevent the operation. The anvil does not let you put every enchantment on every item; each enchantment has a defined target category.

Regular bookshelves: the enchanting-table setup

How many bookshelves you need

You need 15 ordinary bookshelves to reach the highest enchanting-table offer level in the standard setup. Fewer shelves still increase the table’s power, so build what your materials allow and add the rest later.

Correct placement

Leave a one-block air gap between the enchanting table and the bookshelf ring. The shelves can be at the table’s height or one block higher, provided the game can detect them as part of the arrangement. Do not fill the gap with torches, carpet, blocks or other objects that interrupt the table-to-shelf line; an interrupted ring can reduce the effective count. A compact square, U-shape or two-level ring can supply all 15 shelves while leaving an opening for the player.

What ordinary bookshelves do not do

Ordinary bookshelves are not six-slot containers. You cannot open one and place individual books inside. They are decorative blocks and enchanting-table power sources. If you break one without Silk Touch, Minecraft Wiki documents a drop of three books, which means rebuilding it later requires replacing the planks as well.

Finding or making bookshelves

Craft a bookshelf from three books and six wooden planks. Bookshelves can also generate in village libraries, woodland mansions and stronghold libraries. Mining a generated shelf without Silk Touch yields books rather than the block itself; Silk Touch preserves the bookshelf for relocation. Exact structure generation and loot behavior are edition- and version-sensitive.

Chiseled bookshelves: storage, display and redstone

Recipe and capacity

Craft a chiseled bookshelf with six sturdy planks forming the sides and back and three slabs across the middle row. Mojang’s official article describes the result plainly: “A shelf holds up to six books at once.” Each of the six visible positions is an individual storage slot.

What you can put inside

In current releases, chiseled bookshelf slots are intended for book-family items, including ordinary books, enchanted books, Books and Quills, written books and knowledge books where that item is available. This lets one block combine a public document collection with spare enchantments or blank writing materials. The exact accepted-item list and interface behavior should be checked against the edition and release you are playing, especially when using experimental features.

Inserting and removing items

Use the chiseled bookshelf with a book-family item to place it into an available slot. Use an empty hand to remove a stored item, selecting the slot you want. The block remembers its six positions, so a display can be arranged deliberately instead of behaving like a random chest.

Hoppers, droppers and comparators

Chiseled bookshelves support automation with hoppers, droppers and hopper minecarts. A hopper can feed or extract compatible items, while a dropper can load a selected slot as part of a redstone system. A redstone comparator can read the shelf’s state and indicate the last slot interacted with, allowing a bookshelf to act as a simple selector or input panel. Test the facing and timing of your circuit in a copy of the build because redstone behavior depends on the block orientation and the edition’s implementation.

Why they do not replace regular bookshelves

Chiseled bookshelves “don’t currently increase the power of enchanting tables like regular bookshelves do,” according to Mojang’s official chiseled-bookshelf article. Put them in a library for storage and display, but use ordinary bookshelves around the enchanting table when you need higher-level offers.

Fuel value

The same official article states that a chiseled bookshelf can be burned in a furnace to smelt 1.5 items. That is a minor emergency fuel use, not a reason to dismantle a storage wall; wood planks or other renewable fuel sources are normally more practical.

A practical survival progression

  1. Secure sugar cane. Plant it beside water and begin a renewable paper supply.
  2. Collect leather. Breed cows or use another dependable leather source.
  3. Craft several books. Reserve some for Books and Quills and the rest for shelves or enchanting attempts.
  4. Make a Book and Quill. Add a feather and ink sac when you need coordinates, rules or build documentation.
  5. Sign important records. Turn finished drafts into written books and place copies on lecterns or in chiseled bookshelves.
  6. Build the enchanting station. Place an enchanting table and expand the ring to 15 ordinary bookshelves, keeping the one-block gap clear.
  7. Gather lapis and experience. These are required for table enchanting; keep an anvil nearby for transferring books.
  8. Use villagers strategically. A librarian can provide a targeted alternative in exchange for emeralds, subject to your edition’s trade rules.
  9. Add chiseled shelves separately. Use them for organized book storage, displays and redstone controls, not for enchanting power.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • “My shelves are not increasing enchantment levels.” Confirm they are ordinary bookshelves, not chiseled ones, and remove blocks or decorations occupying the air gap.
  • “I cannot edit the book anymore.” You signed it. Continue from an unsigned Book and Quill or create a new draft, depending on your edition’s copying and editing options.
  • “The anvil rejects my enchanted book.” Check that the target item accepts that enchantment and that the book is not conflicting with an enchantment already present.
  • “My bookshelf disappeared when I mined it.” Without Silk Touch, a regular bookshelf drops three books rather than itself.
  • “The chiseled shelf will not accept my item.” Only supported book-family items fit its slots; ordinary tools, blocks and unrelated loot do not.
  • “The librarian is selling a different book than expected.” Villager offers are edition- and version-sensitive. Check the current rules for Java or Bedrock before rebuilding your trading setup.
  • “My comparator circuit reads an unexpected value.” Remember that the comparator reports the shelf’s interaction state, including the last slot used, and that hopper or dropper orientation changes the circuit’s behavior.

Edition and version cautions

The recipes for basic books are stable, but interfaces, villager trades, generated structure contents and some redstone details can change between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition or between releases. Experimental features may also alter chiseled-bookshelf behavior before it reaches a regular release. When following a build guide, match its edition and version to your world, and treat exact loot tables, trade prices and UI controls as release-specific rather than universal.
