Yes. A novice librarian villager can offer a bookshelf trade. The reported chance is two-thirds in Java Edition and 50% in Bedrock Edition, with a listed price of nine emeralds for one bookshelf. Those figures come from the Minecraft Wiki bookshelf reference, which does not state a version range, so treat them as edition-specific reported odds rather than a promise for every current release.
Which villager sells bookshelves?
The villager profession associated with the bookshelf trade is the librarian. More specifically, the reported bookshelf offer is a possible trade for a novice librarian; it is not an offer that appears on every librarian.

Mojang’s official item guide describes the relationship directly: “Lecterns also serve as the job site block for librarian villagers, who like to trade paper, ink and books with the player.” The same guide identifies enchanted books as part of the librarian’s broader trading role, but that does not mean every librarian will show every book-related offer.
In practical terms, look at the villager’s profession and trade screen rather than assuming that any villager near a lectern sells a bookshelf. The trade has to be present in that individual novice librarian’s offers.

How likely is the bookshelf offer?
The Minecraft Wiki bookshelf reference reports different odds by edition:
| Edition | Reported chance for a novice librarian bookshelf offer | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Two-thirds | 9 emeralds for 1 bookshelf |
| Bedrock Edition | 50% | 9 emeralds for 1 bookshelf |
These are offer probabilities, not guarantees. A Java librarian can fail to show the trade, and a Bedrock librarian can fail to show it as well. The numbers describe how often the offer is reported to occur for novice librarians in each edition, not how many bookshelves you receive, how many trades you can perform, or whether a particular world seed must produce one.
The listed cost is nine emeralds for one bookshelf. The reference gives that price as the trade value but does not establish whether discounts, reputation effects, or other temporary price changes apply. Do not assume that nine emeralds is the final amount displayed in every possible trading situation; verify the number in your own trade interface.
How to check whether your villager sells a bookshelf
- Confirm the edition. Identify whether you are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. The reported probabilities differ, and the source does not identify a game-version range.
- Find a librarian. Check the villager’s profession and open its trading interface. A lectern is the librarian job-site block, so it is the relevant block to look for when identifying or establishing that profession.
- Check that the villager is novice. The reported bookshelf odds apply to novice librarians. Do not generalize the figures to every career level.
- Inspect the offers instead of relying on the profession alone. The bookshelf is a possible offer, not a universal one. If the trade list does not show a bookshelf, that individual librarian is not currently presenting the offer.
- Read the displayed price. The reference lists nine emeralds for one bookshelf. Use the amount shown in-game as the immediate price for your edition and version.
- Trade only after confirming the item. A librarian’s other paper, ink, book, or enchanted-book offers are not the same as a bookshelf trade. Make sure the output slot specifically contains the bookshelf block.
This process answers the question without confusing a librarian’s general ability to trade books with the narrower possibility of selling a bookshelf.

Can a librarian sell a bookshelf in Bedrock?
Yes. The reported Bedrock chance is 50% for a novice librarian, and the listed price is nine emeralds for one bookshelf. “50%” means that the offer is possible for about half of the relevant novice-librarian cases represented by the reference; it does not mean that every second villager you meet will necessarily have it.
Bedrock players should also separate this bookshelf information from Mojang’s experimental librarian-trade changes. The Bedrock 1.20.30 update notes discussed experimental changes involving librarian enchanted books and wandering traders. Mojang stated: “However, these changes are not yet final, and they will stay as experimental features while we continue to work on them.” That statement concerns the experimental trade rebalance described in those notes, not a confirmed removal of bookshelf trades.

Accordingly, seeing discussion about experimental enchanted-book trades is not evidence that the bookshelf offer has been deleted. Check the actual bookshelf entry in your Bedrock trading screen and consider whether experimental features are enabled in that world.
Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition
The useful comparison is the reported chance of seeing the offer:
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
- Java Edition: two-thirds for a novice librarian.
- Bedrock Edition: 50% for a novice librarian.
- Both entries: the cited reference lists nine emeralds for one bookshelf.
The difference is meaningful when you are deciding how many librarians to inspect. Java’s reported probability is higher, while Bedrock’s is lower, but neither edition guarantees a bookshelf offer on an individual villager.
The source does not expose a page revision date or a supported version range. It therefore cannot establish that the exact odds and price apply unchanged to every later release. If your question depends on a specific version, use the edition and version shown by your game and verify the current offer in-game.
What to do when no bookshelf appears
Check the villager’s profession and tier
The reported trade is tied to a novice librarian. A villager with another profession is not the target of this check, and a librarian at a different career level is not the population described by the cited odds. Reopen the trade screen and verify both the profession and the novice status before concluding that the trade is unavailable.
Do not treat one villager as a definitive test
Because the bookshelf is a possible offer rather than a guaranteed one, one librarian without it does not disprove the trade. The edition probabilities describe the chance across the relevant librarian cases, not a rule that every village must contain one.

Verify the item in the output slot
Librarians can trade several book-related items. Paper, ink, books, and enchanted books belong to the librarian’s general role, but they are not interchangeable with a bookshelf block. Confirm the block name and the emerald amount shown by the interface.
Check for version-specific differences
If your observed result conflicts with the reported odds or price, record the edition and exact game version before drawing a conclusion. The available reference does not state a version range, and the reviewed sources do not establish whether a later release changed the exact bookshelf odds or price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bookshelf trade versus enchanted-book changes
These subjects are easy to conflate because both involve librarians. The bookshelf question is about a block offered for emeralds. The Bedrock 1.20.30 notes addressed experimental changes to librarian enchanted-book trades and wandering traders. They did not state that bookshelf trades were removed.
Use the distinction when reading update discussions:
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Bookshelf trade: a reported novice-librarian offer, priced at nine emeralds in the cited reference.
- Enchanted-book rebalance: experimental Bedrock changes described in Mojang’s 1.20.30 notes.
- Evidence limit: the update notes’ warning about experimental status does not provide a new bookshelf probability or price.
This separation prevents an experimental change to one librarian category from being mistaken for a confirmed change to every librarian trade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat the nine-emerald price does—and does not—tell you
Nine emeralds is the listed exchange for one bookshelf in the cited bookshelf reference. It gives you a benchmark for deciding whether the offer shown in your interface matches the documented trade. It does not establish a universal final price after any possible discount, nor does the source discuss bulk purchases, restocking, or the number of times the trade can be repeated.
If your interface shows a different amount, treat the displayed in-game value as the value governing that transaction and investigate the edition, version, and any active game mechanics before assuming the reference is wrong. The available evidence does not explain every cause of a price difference.
Bottom line for players
Look for a novice librarian and inspect its offers. A bookshelf is a possible trade in both major editions: the reported chance is two-thirds in Java and 50% in Bedrock, with nine emeralds listed for one bookshelf. Since the reference supplies no version range, confirm the offer and price in your own game’s trading screen, especially if you are playing a newer release or using Bedrock experimental features.
