A bow is Minecraft’s most flexible ranged weapon: craft it from sticks and string, load it with arrows, and improve it with enchantments. The strongest general-purpose setup is Power V, Unbreaking III, Flame, Punch II, and either Infinity or Mending. Choose Infinity when ordinary-arrow conservation matters most; choose Mending when you want XP-based repairs or plan to use tipped arrows.

How to craft a bow
You need three sticks and three string. Arrange them in a crafting table in the familiar bow pattern: string fills one vertical side, while the sticks form a curved diagonal from the opposite upper corner through the center to the opposite lower corner. The finished bow is a ranged weapon; it does not contain ammunition by itself, so keep arrows in your inventory.

- Three sticks: the wooden parts of the bow.
- Three string: the bowstring.
- Arrows: ammunition for firing.
Ordinary arrows are the practical choice for routine combat. Tipped arrows can apply status effects, but they change which enchantments are useful: Infinity preserves regular arrows only and does not work with tipped arrows.
How to fire it
- Place the bow on your hotbar and put arrows in your inventory.
- Hold the use button to draw the bow. A longer draw produces a more effective shot than releasing immediately.
- Keep the crosshair on the target while compensating for projectile travel and gravity.
- Release to fire, then reposition or draw again.
Enchantments do not make arrows fly faster or travel farther. Range therefore depends on your aim, draw timing, line of sight and the arrow’s natural projectile arc, not on a hidden “range” bonus from the bow.

Bow enchantments explained
The following table lists the survival-relevant bow enchantments, their maximum levels and the decisions each one affects.
| Enchantment | Maximum | Effect | Best reason to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power | V | Increases arrow damage. | Highest priority for a damage-focused bow. | It does not increase arrow speed or distance. |
| Punch | II | Increases knockback on targets hit by arrows. | Creates space from hostile mobs or controls a fight at range. | Knockback can disrupt follow-up shots or push enemies out of position. |
| Flame | I | Sets targets hit by arrows on fire. | Adds fire damage and makes hits visually easy to track. | It is an effect enchantment, not a speed or range upgrade. |
| Unbreaking | III | Reduces durability consumption, allowing the bow to last longer. | Useful on every long-term bow, regardless of ammunition choice. | It slows wear; it does not repair an already damaged bow. |
| Mending | I | Repairs the bow when you gain XP orbs. | Best when XP is readily available or when using tipped arrows. | It cannot normally be combined with Infinity in survival enchanting. |
| Infinity | I | Regular arrows are not consumed when firing. | Best for conserving a stock of ordinary arrows during routine combat. | At least one regular arrow must remain in your inventory, and tipped arrows are not covered. |
| Curse of Vanishing | I | Causes the bow to disappear on death under the documented conditions. | Rarely useful in normal survival play. | Generally undesirable on a bow you intend to keep. |
Power: the damage enchantment
Power is available through level V and increases the damage dealt by arrows. If your first priority is killing targets in fewer shots, Power should be the foundation of the build. It changes damage, not projectile speed, flight distance or aiming requirements.
Punch: control rather than damage
Punch increases knockback and reaches level II. It is valuable when you need to keep zombies, skeletons or other threats away from you, and it can buy time against a close attacker. The trade-off is control: a target launched backward may leave your preferred range or interrupt the position needed for a second hit. Treat Punch as a play-style choice, not an automatic damage upgrade.
Flame: fire on hit
Flame has one level and sets targets hit by arrows on fire. It is a strong general-purpose addition when burning targets helps your fight, but it does not make arrows faster or extend their reach.
Unbreaking: longer life between repairs
Unbreaking III improves durability by reducing how often the bow consumes durability. It is useful whether you select Infinity or Mending, because both choices still leave the bow exposed to normal wear while you shoot.

Mending: XP-powered repairs
Mending has one level. When you gain XP orbs, the enchantment repairs the bow; the official description is, “Mending – Repairs the item when gaining XP orbs.” Mending is particularly attractive for a bow used regularly near a reliable XP source. It also works with tipped arrows, unlike Infinity.

Infinity has one level and prevents regular arrows from being consumed when you fire. You must still carry at least one ordinary arrow in your inventory for the bow to function. Infinity does not apply to tipped arrows, so it is an ammunition-saving enchantment for standard arrows rather than a universal ammunition solution.
Infinity or Mending?
Infinity and Mending are mutually exclusive through normal survival enchanting. You cannot simply add one to a bow that already has the other by combining books or bows in an anvil. Decide based on how you actually use the weapon.
| Decision factor | Infinity | Mending |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary-arrow consumption | Regular arrows are preserved; keep at least one in inventory. | Arrows are consumed normally. |
| Tipped arrows | Does not work with tipped arrows. | Fully compatible with tipped-arrow use. |
| Repair method | Needs another repair method when durability runs low. | Repairs the bow from XP orbs. |
| Best fit | Routine combat with ordinary arrows and a priority on ammunition economy. | XP-rich play, long-term maintenance and status-effect arrows. |
Pick Infinity when
- You mostly fire ordinary arrows.
- You want one arrow stack to last through extensive exploration or combat.
- You do not need tipped-arrow effects.
Pick Mending when
- You have convenient access to XP orbs for repairs.
- You use tipped arrows.
- You prefer a bow that can be maintained continuously rather than conserving ordinary ammunition.
Neither enchantment is universally superior. Infinity reduces ordinary-ammunition use, while Mending supports repair and tipped-arrow flexibility.
The best general-purpose bow build
A practical high-end target is Power V, Unbreaking III, Flame, Punch II, and either Infinity or Mending. This combination covers the four decisions that matter most: damage, durability, ammunition economy and knockback control.

Infinity combat build
Power V + Unbreaking III + Flame + Punch II + Infinity suits a player who carries ordinary arrows and wants them to last. It is convenient for routine fights, patrols and exploration where resupplying arrows is less desirable than carrying a single reserve arrow.
Mending utility build
Power V + Unbreaking III + Flame + Punch II + Mending suits a player who regularly collects XP or uses tipped arrows. The bow consumes ammunition normally, but XP can restore its durability and tipped arrows retain their status effects.
When to leave out Punch
Punch II is optional. Keep it when creating distance is central to your strategy. Leave it off when knockback makes targets harder to track, pushes them out of follow-up range or interferes with the way you set up close-range attacks.
Why to avoid Curse of Vanishing
Curse of Vanishing makes the bow disappear on death under the documented conditions. Because a high-level bow can take substantial time and resources to assemble, the curse is generally a poor choice for a survival weapon unless you deliberately want the item removed when you die.

- Start with a durable bow. A new bow gives you more room to enchant and use before repairs become necessary.
- Set your priority enchantments. Power is the damage core; Unbreaking protects durability; then choose Flame, Punch and either Infinity or Mending according to your play style.
- Use an enchanting table or books. Enchanting-table results are random within the available options, while books let you target specific enchantments when you have obtained them.
- Combine equal levels in an anvil. Equal-level enchantments can combine into the next level, up to the survival maximum. For example, two matching lower-level Power books can be combined toward the higher Power level, provided the result does not exceed Power V.
- Keep incompatible choices separate. Infinity and Mending cannot normally be merged through survival enchanting, so choose one before committing your final bow.
- Watch the anvil cost. The order in which you combine books and bows affects the displayed level cost. One worked guide example reaches a total cost of 29 levels for an Infinity-or-Mending bow path; that is an example ordering, not a universal cost for every inventory, prior anvil use or combination sequence.
If an anvil refuses a combination, check whether the items contain mutually exclusive enchantments, whether the resulting level would exceed the survival maximum, or whether the displayed level requirement is beyond your current XP.

Draw before you need the shot
Because draw timing affects the shot, begin drawing while you still have cover or distance. Releasing too early lowers the value of your damage enchantments by giving the projectile a weaker launch.
Use terrain to control range
Arrows follow a projectile arc and eventually fall. Elevated positions, clear sightlines and deliberate spacing make accurate hits easier. No bow enchantment removes the need to account for gravity.
Choose ammunition deliberately
Carry ordinary arrows for general encounters. Reserve tipped arrows for situations where their status effects justify the extra ammunition cost, and remember that Infinity will not preserve them.
Use Punch for space, not reflexively
Against a charging enemy, Punch can create the distance needed for another draw. Against a target you are trying to keep in a predictable lane, the same knockback may make the next shot harder. Decide whether displacement helps before selecting Punch II.

Maintain the bow before a long expedition
Unbreaking slows durability loss, but it does not make the bow indestructible. A Mending bow should be taken near a dependable XP source when its durability is low. An Infinity bow still needs a repair plan, because its ammunition economy does not repair the weapon.

Troubleshooting common bow problems
“Infinity is not saving my arrows.”
Check that at least one ordinary arrow is in your inventory. Infinity does not activate without that reserve, and it does not apply to tipped arrows.
“My Mending bow is not repairing.”
Mending repairs the item when you gain XP orbs. Confirm that XP is actually reaching you and that the bow is the item being repaired rather than another damaged, Mending-equipped item competing for the orbs.
“My arrows are not reaching distant targets.”
No bow enchantment increases arrow speed or travel distance. Hold the draw longer, aim above distant targets to account for the arc, and improve your line of sight or elevation.
“Punch is making fights worse.”
That is a normal trade-off, not a malfunction. Remove Punch from a replacement bow if knockback disrupts your follow-up shots or pushes targets out of your preferred range.

“The anvil will not combine my books.”
Look for the Infinity–Mending incompatibility first. Then check the resulting enchantment level, the survival maximum for that enchantment and the anvil’s displayed XP requirement. Reordering combinations can change the cost, but it cannot bypass a mutually exclusive pair.
Quick Recap
A simple decision checklist
- Need maximum arrow damage? Add Power V.
- Want the bow to last longer? Add Unbreaking III.
- Need targets pushed away? Add Punch II; otherwise treat it as optional.
- Want burning hits? Add Flame.
- Use ordinary arrows and value ammunition economy? Choose Infinity.
- Use tipped arrows or have reliable XP? Choose Mending.
- Want a dependable survival weapon? Avoid Curse of Vanishing.
