Minecraft uses “brick” for two related but separate things:
- Brick item: the small item produced by smelting one clay ball. It is an ingredient rather than a full building block.
- Brick block: the placeable red masonry block made from four brick items in a 2×2 arrangement.
Confusing these two stages is the most common reason a new player thinks the recipe is not working. Smelting gives you brick items; crafting is the additional step that turns them into a block you can place in a wall, floor, chimney or path.

What you need
| Stage | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Collecting clay | One clay block broken without Silk Touch | Four clay balls |
| Smelting | One clay ball and furnace fuel | One brick item and 0.3 experience |
| Crafting the block | Four brick items arranged in a 2×2 square | One brick block |
You also need access to a furnace and a crafting table. The furnace performs the material conversion; the crafting table assembles the finished masonry block.
How to make bricks step by step
1. Find and harvest clay
Look for clay in or around shallow water, rivers, swamps and lush caves. Exposed underwater shelves and muddy-looking patches are useful places to check, although exact generation can vary with the game version and world seed.
Break a clay block with your normal mining method when you want clay balls. A clay block drops four clay balls without Silk Touch, and Fortune does not increase that four-ball yield. If you use Silk Touch, you preserve the clay block instead of receiving the balls needed for smelting, so Silk Touch is the wrong tool choice for this particular step.
2. Load the furnace
- Open the furnace.
- Put clay balls in the upper input slot.
- Put a fuel item in the lower fuel slot.
- Wait for the furnace to finish smelting, then collect the brick items from the output slot.
Each clay ball is processed separately: one ball becomes one brick item and awards 0.3 experience. The fuel type changes how long the furnace runs, but not the resulting brick. If the input remains in place and no progress begins, check the lower slot first; an empty or unsuitable fuel slot is the usual cause.
3. Craft a brick block
Open a crafting table and place four brick items in a 2×2 square. The arrangement fills two adjacent rows or columns with no gaps. Take the resulting brick block from the output slot and repeat the pattern for as many blocks as you need.

How much clay do you need?
The numbers line up neatly because one clay block supplies exactly four clay balls, and four brick items make exactly one brick block. Assuming every ball is smelted and no material is lost, one harvested clay block supplies the ingredients for one finished brick block.

For a target, count the brick blocks in your design and collect the same number of clay blocks as a starting estimate. Architectural details, slabs, stairs and mistakes can increase the amount you ultimately use, so builders commonly gather a reserve before beginning a large project.
Where to look for clay efficiently
Shallow water and river edges
Start with accessible water rather than diving into deep areas. Clay is easier to recognize where the bottom is visible, and river edges let you scan a long stretch of terrain quickly. Bring enough air-management supplies for underwater mining and mark cleared sections so you do not repeatedly search the same patch.
Swamps
Swamp water and its margins are another place to inspect. Visibility can be poor, so follow the shoreline and check shallow pools instead of wandering randomly through dense vegetation.
Lush caves
Lush caves can expose clay underground and give you a reason to check natural cave openings as you explore. Generation details are version-sensitive; treat these locations as practical search areas rather than a guarantee that every cave will contain a large deposit.

Mining without wasting the deposit
Because Fortune does not improve the four-ball drop, a Fortune tool offers no extra clay for this job. If your goal is bricks, avoid Silk Touch and collect the balls directly. If you deliberately want intact clay blocks for decoration or storage, Silk Touch has the opposite effect and should be used only when preserving the block matters more than starting the smelting chain.
What brick blocks are good for
Walls and houses
Brick blocks provide a consistent red masonry surface for complete houses, foundations, garden walls and outbuildings. Their regular pattern works especially well when you keep windows, doors and roof lines simple enough for the repeating texture to remain visible.
Chimneys and fireplaces
Brick is fire-immune, which makes it a natural material for a fireplace surround or chimney. Build the masonry shell around the hearth, then leave the opening and smoke path appropriate for your design. Fire immunity protects the brick itself; it does not make every neighboring material safe, so keep flammable decorative blocks away from any fire you use.
Paths and courtyards
Use brick as a path surface between buildings, around a central plaza or as a border around farmland. A narrow strip can act as a visual guide without consuming enough material to dominate the whole settlement. Mixing brick with a quieter block for the path edge helps define entrances and intersections.
Slabs and stairs
Brick blocks can be turned into brick slabs and brick stairs through their corresponding crafting recipes. These forms let you slope a roof, cap a wall, build steps into a path or create trim without replacing the entire structure with full blocks. When planning quantities, remember that shaped pieces are additional uses of your brick supply, so reserve blocks for load-bearing-looking walls before converting a large batch.

Brick building ideas
A compact brick cottage
- Lay a one- or two-block-high brick foundation to establish the footprint.
- Raise the corners first, then fill the wall sections so windows and doors remain easy to position.
- Use brick stairs or slabs to create a stepped roof line rather than ending the walls with a flat, abrupt edge.
- Frame the entrance with a slightly projecting brick band to make the doorway readable from a distance.
This approach uses brick where its repeating texture has the most visual impact while leaving room for a contrasting roof or interior material.
A working chimney
- Place a brick column against the outside wall of a house.
- Widen the base around the fireplace so it reads as a substantial hearth rather than a thin pipe.
- Carry the column above the roof line and finish it with a cap made from brick slabs or stairs.
- Keep any actual flame in a controlled opening and separate it from flammable blocks.
The brick column can be purely decorative or paired with a fireplace; its fire-immune construction suits either role.
A village street
Use full brick blocks for a central strip, then add brick stairs at changes in elevation and slabs for low curbs. Repeat the same border around a square or market area to make separate buildings feel like one settlement. This is more material-efficient visually than covering every nearby surface in red masonry.
A courtyard or plaza
Lay brick in a simple grid or border pattern, leaving an open center for a tree, fountain or gathering space. A one-block border around the edge prevents the surface from blending into surrounding terrain. Keep the pattern aligned with entrances so the plaza naturally directs players toward doors and paths.
Industrial or fortified detailing
Brick works as a band between other wall materials, a foundation course beneath timber construction or a repeated column around a gatehouse. Alternating full blocks with stairs or slabs adds depth while preserving the unmistakable masonry theme. Use the red block sparingly when you want it to read as trim rather than the dominant façade.

Brick versus stone bricks and other masonry
Stone bricks are a separate material. They come from stone, not clay, and follow a different resource path. Smelting clay will never produce stone bricks, and collecting stone does not substitute for clay balls in the brick recipe.

Version and historical caveats
Some old Minecraft history pages describe clay as unobtainable or without a useful purpose. That statement applies only to the earliest version being discussed, not to the modern clay-to-brick progression. It should not be used to judge a current world.
Recipes and generation descriptions in available guide excerpts are undated, so no single version number can be attached confidently to every detail. The core sequence—clay balls, furnace-smelted brick items and four-item crafting into a brick block—is the practical chain to test in your edition. If the recipe book presents a different arrangement, follow the in-game entry for that release.
Trading claims to treat cautiously
Some guides report villager trades involving bricks, with figures of 10 bricks in Java Edition and 16 in Bedrock Edition. Those numbers are not established here, so do not plan a resource strategy around them. The dependable, documented route in this guide is gathering clay and smelting it yourself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical workflow for a large build
- Sketch the footprint and estimate the number of full brick blocks before collecting resources.
- Search shallow water, rivers, swamps and lush caves for clay.
- Harvest without Silk Touch so each clay block becomes four clay balls.
- Run the clay balls through a fueled furnace and collect the brick items.
- Craft finished brick blocks in batches of four items.
- Set aside a portion for stairs and slabs only after the main walls, foundations and chimney are complete.
- Use brick as a consistent visual anchor, then add other materials for roofs, windows, interiors and contrasting details.
Following the chain in batches keeps the conversion easy to audit: clay balls waiting for the furnace are unfinished material, brick items are an intermediate ingredient, and brick blocks are the placeable building stock.
