A Minecraft bundle is crafted by placing one String directly above one Leather. It combines different item types into one inventory slot, with room for one stack in total (usually 64 items). In Java Edition, left-click inserts items, right-click removes the selected top item type, and the mouse wheel changes which visible item is selected. Holding the bundle and right-clicking can spill its contents onto the ground. Bedrock Edition uses platform-specific selection controls, including a mouse wheel, controller right stick, or touch tapping, according to its release documentation.

What a bundle does
A bundle is compact storage for mixed, low-volume loot. Instead of reserving separate inventory slots for several item types, it packs those types together into one bundle slot. Mojang describes it as an item that “can pack different items together into the same stack.”

The important limitation is that a bundle does not add another full chest’s worth of capacity. Its contents occupy one stack in total, normally up to 64 items under the usual 64-item stack convention. That total can be made up of different item types, which is why a bundle is most useful for scattered drops, partial stacks and exploration supplies rather than for storing large quantities of one resource.
- Good use: clearing several small stacks of unrelated items from an early-game mining or exploration trip.
- Less useful: replacing a chest, shulker box or a normal full stack of one resource.
- Key behavior: the bundle has a visible “top” item type. In Java, removing a specific visible type requires selecting it first.
How to craft a bundle
Recipe and placement
Use a crafting grid and put one String in a square directly above one Leather. The two ingredients form a vertical pair:

The arrangement is the recipe stated in Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes: “The Bundle is crafted with one String above one Leather.” Once both ingredients are in place, take the resulting bundle from the output slot.
Ingredients to gather
- String: commonly obtained from spiders, cobwebs or other ordinary early-game sources.
- Leather: obtained from suitable animals or other normal leather sources in your world.
The recipe originally used rabbit hide in an earlier prototype. Mojang changed it to String and Leather so the item would be easier to obtain near the start of a world. If an old video or guide tells you to collect rabbit hide, it is describing that earlier recipe rather than the released one covered here.

When the recipe is missing
Check the edition and version you are playing before troubleshooting your ingredients. The recipe described in the Java 1.21.2 release notes is the String-over-Leather recipe. A guide written for an earlier snapshot may show the rabbit-hide prototype, while an interface that does not recognize either ingredient may indicate an older game version or a platform-specific update state.
Bundle capacity and packing rules
One stack, not one stack per item type
A bundle’s capacity is one stack overall. It can contain a mixture of item types, but adding more types does not multiply the capacity. Think of the bundle as consolidating several small piles into the space normally occupied by one stack, not as granting a separate 64-item allowance for every type.
The “usually 64” figure is a shorthand for the standard stack size referenced in Mojang’s release notes. Items that use a different normal stack limit still consume space according to their ordinary stacking behavior, so the practical number of physical items can vary. The defining rule remains one stack of total capacity.

Why mixed contents help
Without a bundle, one piece of a new item can occupy a complete inventory slot. A bundle lets you consolidate those small quantities while leaving the freed slots available for tools, blocks or larger resource stacks. This is particularly helpful during early exploration, when the inventory fills with flowers, food ingredients, drops and other items that are individually useful but unlikely to form full stacks immediately.
Reading the tooltip
The tooltip is also the selection interface in Java Edition:
- With fewer than 12 item types, the tooltip shows all of the bundle’s contents.
- With 12 or more item types, it shows only the top three rows and hides additional entries below.
- Selecting a visible item type makes that item visibly poke out of the bundle icon, giving you a cue about what a removal action will take next.
A truncated tooltip does not mean the hidden items were lost. It means the interface is showing only the leading portion of a long contents list; use the selection control to work with the visible entries before trying to empty or reorganize the bundle.
Using a bundle in Java Edition
The Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes define the basic mouse controls. Keep the bundle in your inventory or cursor as appropriate, and use the following actions:

Putting items in
Use left-click to place an item into the bundle. Continue with other item types while there is room in the bundle’s single-stack capacity. If the bundle cannot accept more, the item remains outside it; do not assume that a click succeeded simply because the cursor moved.

Taking items out
Right-click removes the first or currently selected top item type. If that is not the material you want, leave the tooltip visible and scroll the mouse wheel until the desired visible type is selected. The chosen item will poke out of the bundle icon. Right-click again to remove that selected type.
This “select, then remove” order matters. Right-clicking repeatedly without changing the selection can keep taking the same top type, while scrolling changes which visible type is next in line.
Dumping everything onto the ground
When the bundle is held in your hand, right-clicking—or holding right-click—can empty its contents onto the ground. Use this only where you can safely collect the drops again. It is a fast way to clear a bundle, but it is not the same as transferring the contents into a chest or another container.
Java workflow example
- Craft the bundle with one String above one Leather.
- Place a few small, unrelated stacks into it with left-click.
- Hover so the tooltip is visible and inspect the listed item types.
- Scroll to the visible type you need, confirm that it pokes out of the icon, then right-click to remove it.
- For a complete clear, hold the bundle and use right-click in a safe location, then pick up the dropped items.
Using bundles in Bedrock Edition
Selection controls depend on the device
Bedrock’s documented bundle-selection controls differ by input method. The Bedrock 1.21.40 release notes identify these ways to choose another visible item type:

The exact on-screen button prompts can vary with device settings and the current Bedrock interface. The durable concept is the same: select the visible item type first, then use the platform’s normal bundle interaction to remove it. If a mouse wheel, right stick or tap appears to do nothing, make sure the bundle’s contents or tooltip is currently displayed and that you are selecting an item the interface can show.

Bedrock version notes
The controls above are documented for Bedrock 1.21.40. Bedrock and Java do not always receive identical interface changes at the same time, so do not apply a Java mouse instruction literally to a controller or touch session. Check the control prompts shown by your device if they differ from the documented release behavior.
For creators and add-on authors
Microsoft Learn documents the minecraft:bundle_interaction component for Bedrock 1.21.110. That component requires minecraft:storage_item and is available without an experimental toggle in that version. This is an add-on implementation detail, not a requirement for an ordinary player crafting and using a standard bundle.

The major practical difference is input handling, not the reason to carry a bundle. On a Java mouse-and-keyboard setup, scrolling is the way to change the selected visible type. On Bedrock, the equivalent selection action maps to the mouse wheel, right stick or a touch tap.

Exploration and early mining
Carry a bundle when you expect many small, unrelated pickups. Put in partial stacks that would otherwise consume separate slots, while leaving ordinary inventory slots open for tools, building blocks and resources that will quickly become full stacks.
Keep high-priority items out
A bundle is not a safer location than the rest of your inventory. Keep items you need immediately—such as a food supply or a tool you are actively switching to—in ordinary, easy-to-reach slots. Use the bundle for overflow and miscellaneous material so you do not have to open and inspect it for every routine action.

Sort before a long trip
Before leaving a base, decide which item types belong together. A deliberate bundle is easier to empty later than one filled with every random pickup. Remember that the tooltip may be truncated at 12 or more item types, so fewer, clearer categories make selection faster.
Empty it deliberately
If you are using the Java dump action, stand where dropped items cannot fall into lava, water currents or an inaccessible gap. The right-click dump releases items onto the ground; it does not route them into a nearby chest automatically.
Troubleshooting common problems
The recipe does not appear
- Verify that the ingredients are String and Leather, not the older rabbit-hide prototype.
- Place the String directly above the Leather in the crafting grid.
- Check your game version. The cited Java recipe is from the 1.21.2 release notes, while Bedrock behavior is documented separately by Bedrock version.
My click did not add the item
The bundle may already be at its one-stack capacity, or the item may not have been placed in the bundle’s active inventory interaction. Try a smaller partial stack, confirm that the bundle’s contents change, and do not move on until the tooltip reflects the addition.
Right-click removes the wrong item
In Java, right-click acts on the first or selected top item type. Keep the tooltip visible, scroll to the desired visible type, look for that item to poke out of the icon, and then right-click.
I cannot see everything inside
At 12 or more item types, Java intentionally shows only the top three tooltip rows. The hidden entries are a display limitation, not evidence that they disappeared. Remove or reorganize visible types first, then inspect the tooltip again as the list becomes shorter.

On Java, right-clicking while holding the bundle can dump its contents, including when right-click is held. Collect the items immediately if the spill was accidental, and avoid using that action over hazardous terrain.
Controller or touch selection is not obvious
On Bedrock, selection is not always a mouse-wheel action. Bedrock 1.21.40 documents the right stick for controllers and tapping for touch devices. Open the bundle’s interface, use the control appropriate to your input method, and follow the current on-screen prompt if it differs from the release-note description.
Bottom line
Craft a bundle with one String above one Leather when you need to consolidate scattered loot. Treat it as one mixed stack—not unlimited storage. Java players use left-click to insert, right-click to remove, the mouse wheel to select a visible type and a held right-click to dump contents. Bedrock maps selection to the mouse wheel, right stick or touch tapping depending on the device, with exact prompts tied to the installed version.
