The Crafter is Minecraft 1.21’s redstone-controlled crafting block. Craft one in a crafting table, configure its 3×3 grid, feed ingredients with hoppers or droppers, and send a new redstone pulse for each crafting attempt. The result leaves through the Crafter’s front face, so a correctly oriented output hopper can collect a continuous production line.

How to craft a Crafter
The 1.21 recipe produces one Crafter from four ingredient types. Arrange these items in a crafting table:
| Ingredient | Amount |
|---|---|
| Iron ingot | 5 |
| Redstone dust | 2 |
| Crafting table | 1 |
| Dropper | 1 |
After crafting, place the Crafter so its front face points toward the path where the finished item should go. That face is the ejection side. A hopper, chest, barrel or another collection system must be positioned on that side rather than simply placed against an arbitrary side of the block.

What you see in the Crafter interface
The interface contains a 3×3 input grid on the left and an output preview in the upper-right. The preview shows what the current ingredients and slot arrangement can produce. It is not a normal crafting-table result slot that you can click and remove manually; the Crafter releases the result only when it receives a qualifying redstone pulse.
What the Crafter does
A Crafter performs a crafting attempt when it receives a new redstone pulse. Mojang describes the trigger as any pulse from a button, lever, pressure plate or another redstone source. A continuously powered Crafter is not repeatedly activated by the same uninterrupted signal; it needs a new signal event for the next attempt.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On a successful attempt, one crafted result is ejected from the front face. If the recipe produces several output types or remainder items, those are released together according to the recipe’s normal result behavior. This lets a redstone circuit replace the repeated hand action of a crafting table while hoppers and droppers handle item movement.
Manual test before building a clock
- Place the Crafter with its face aimed at an empty block or a temporary collection container.
- Put the ingredients for a known recipe into the grid.
- Send one button pulse or another short redstone pulse.
- Confirm that the expected result leaves from the front face.
If this test fails, fix the recipe layout, slot configuration or orientation before adding a clock. A clock can make a wrongly configured machine difficult to diagnose because it keeps moving items while you are inspecting it.
Controlling the 3×3 grid
Every Crafter position can be enabled or disabled. With an empty hand, interact with a slot to toggle it off. A disabled slot cannot hold an item and is skipped when a hopper or dropper tries to insert one. Toggle it again to make the position available.
Why disabling slots matters
Unshaped recipes that use one position are straightforward: leave one slot enabled and disable the other eight. Without that restriction, an input hopper can place an item in any empty position, which may produce an invalid arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Shaped recipes require the same discipline. Enable only the positions occupied by the recipe and disable every unused position. The enabled pattern must match the recipe’s shape, not merely contain the right item counts.
How external insertion chooses a slot
When a hopper or dropper inserts an item, the Crafter scans enabled positions from left to right and then top to bottom. It uses the first empty eligible slot. If there is no empty slot, it prefers the smallest matching stack. Disabled positions are always skipped.

This rule explains most “items went into the wrong Crafter slots” incidents. A hopper does not understand the visual shape you intend; it follows the scan order. Disable unused positions or use separate, controlled input lines when a recipe depends on exact placement.
Build a basic automated Crafter
The simplest production line has an input container, an insertion hopper or dropper, a pulse source, the Crafter and an output hopper leading to storage.
1. Place and orient the Crafter
Decide where the finished item should travel, then place the Crafter with its face aimed directly at that route. If the collection hopper is below the machine, orient the Crafter’s face downward into that hopper. The important relationship is face-to-hopper alignment, not the absolute compass direction.
2. Prepare the input path
- Place a barrel or chest above or behind the Crafter.
- Connect a hopper from that container into the Crafter, or use a dropper aimed into the Crafter.
- Load a small test quantity of ingredients rather than a full storage system.
Hoppers and hopper minecarts can insert into and extract from a Crafter. Droppers can insert. The insertion device still obeys the Crafter’s enabled-slot and scan-order rules.
3. Configure the recipe pattern
Use an empty hand to disable every position the recipe does not use. For a one-slot recipe, this usually means one enabled position and eight disabled positions. For a shaped recipe, leave enabled exactly the positions required by the shape.
4. Add a pulse source
Use a button for one-at-a-time testing. For batch production, connect a repeating redstone source. Mojang’s compact example uses two redstone repeaters, redstone dust and a redstone torch to form a clock. The clock must generate distinct on-off transitions; leaving the Crafter permanently powered does not provide one crafting attempt per game tick.
5. Collect the result from the face
Place an output hopper directly on the Crafter’s ejection side and point that hopper into a barrel, chest or downstream filter. A hopper placed underneath a different side can interact with the Crafter’s inventory instead of collecting finished items, potentially pulling ingredients out before a recipe is completed.
6. Test at low speed
- Pulse once and verify one result appears.
- Confirm that the output hopper removes the result.
- Send several pulses while watching whether ingredients arrive quickly enough.
- Only then connect the full input container and storage system.
Redstone timing and pulse speed
Clock speed must match the rate at which ingredients reach the Crafter. If pulses arrive faster than items are delivered, some attempts occur with an incomplete recipe and no useful output. A slower clock wastes less power and is easier to troubleshoot; a faster clock is useful only when the input path can keep the grid supplied.

Redstone signals begin at strength 15 and lose one strength for each redstone-dust block they travel through. Repeaters restore signal strength and add a delay adjustable from 1 to 4 redstone ticks. Minecraft uses 20 game ticks per second, while redstone signals are evaluated at 10 ticks per second. These units let you estimate a safe interval, then refine it by observing the actual hopper delivery rate.
Choosing a trigger
- Button: Best for recipe checks, maintenance and single crafts.
- Repeater clock: Suitable for unattended batches when the input supply is predictable.
- Comparator-gated clock: Useful when the machine should run only while the Crafter is loaded or when you need feedback to stop or slow a clock.
Comparator monitoring
A comparator reading a Crafter can output a signal from strength 0 through 9. Each non-empty or toggled slot contributes one level. That reading can tell a control circuit whether the expected positions are configured and whether ingredients are present.
For example, a comparator can be wired so a clock runs only when the Crafter has enough occupied or enabled positions to represent the intended recipe. It can also provide a simple diagnostic signal: a reading that does not match the pattern you expect indicates an empty slot, an item in the wrong position or a slot that was toggled accidentally.
Planning a reliable production line
Choose the recipe before choosing the wiring. A one-position, unshaped recipe can use one hopper and a single enabled slot. A shaped recipe needs a fixed pattern, so the safest approach is to disable every irrelevant slot and let controlled input streams fill only the enabled positions. If different ingredients share one hopper, the Crafter’s scan order can still place them in an unintended pattern; separate droppers or filtered lines provide better control.
Keep the input container close enough that the hopper path is easy to inspect, but leave room to see the Crafter interface and comparator output. A hopper can be used for both insertion and extraction, and a hopper minecart can serve the same inventory-transfer role where a rail line is more practical. Droppers are useful when you want a pulse-controlled item feed, but they do not automatically solve recipe placement: the Crafter still applies its left-to-right, top-to-bottom rule.
Plan storage for the result before turning on a clock. A face-aligned hopper can feed a barrel or chest directly, or it can lead into a larger filter system. If that destination fills, the Crafter may continue attempting crafts while the ejection path is blocked. A comparator-controlled clock is preferable for a machine that should stop when its input pattern is not loaded or when storage needs attention.

Pulse behavior and recipe results
Think of each redstone transition as one request, not as a continuous “crafting mode.” A button is therefore a useful commissioning tool: it isolates recipe and orientation errors without introducing clock timing. Once one pulse gives the expected item, add a repeating source and lengthen the interval until the input line stays ahead of the crafting attempts.
Most recipes eject one crafted stack per successful attempt, but recipes with multiple output types or remainder items release those items together according to the recipe’s normal result behavior. Leave adequate room at the face and ensure the collection system can accept every part of that release. The output preview is only a status display; it does not let you take the result by hand.

Worked build: logs into planks
Logs-to-planks is a useful first automation because the recipe uses one input position and produces four planks per successful attempt.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Disable every Crafter position except one.
- Place a barrel or chest of logs above or behind an input hopper.
- Feed that hopper into the enabled Crafter position.
- Point the Crafter’s face into an output hopper leading to a barrel.
- Use a button for a manual batch or a redstone clock for continuous conversion.
Each valid pulse converts one log into four planks. The clock continues the operation until the input supply is exhausted or the output path becomes full. If the machine fires while no log is present, that pulse simply does not produce the intended result, which is why matching clock speed to hopper delivery matters.
Worked build: furnace output into stone bricks
For large stone-brick quantities, the official pattern combines a furnace, chests and hoppers, then places a Crafter below the furnace’s output. The furnace still needs its own fuel and input supply.
- Feed the furnace with stone and fuel using the required chest-and-hopper arrangement.
- Route the furnace output into the Crafter’s input side.
- Enable a square of four Crafter positions and disable the remaining five.
- Connect a redstone clock that sends separate pulses.
- Place an output hopper on the Crafter’s face and route it to storage.
The four-position pattern provides the shaped arrangement needed for stone bricks while preventing incoming stone from occupying unrelated positions. If the furnace output arrives in bursts, a comparator or a slower clock can keep the Crafter from attempting crafts before the next batch is ready.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Crafter does nothing when powered
- Check that the signal is producing a new pulse rather than remaining continuously on.
- Press a button once to separate a recipe problem from a clock problem.
- Verify that the ingredients form a valid recipe in the enabled positions.
- Check that no required position was disabled.
Items enter the wrong positions
- Disable every position the recipe does not use.
- Remember that insertion scans left-to-right, top-to-bottom.
- For shaped recipes, enable only the exact pattern and test with a small number of items.
The result is not collected
- Find the Crafter’s front face and move the output hopper to that side.
- If the hopper is directly underneath, confirm that the Crafter is facing downward into it.
- Check that the hopper points onward to a barrel, chest or filter rather than into an unrelated block.
The machine skips crafts
- Slow the clock or add repeater delay so ingredients can arrive before the next pulse.
- Use a comparator to monitor whether the expected positions are occupied or enabled.
- Inspect the input hopper for a blocked destination or a disabled slot pattern.
Ingredients disappear before crafting
A hopper on the wrong side can extract from the Crafter’s inventory instead of collecting the finished item. Reorient the Crafter or relocate the hopper so extraction occurs from the front-face output path.

Java and Bedrock considerations
The recipe, pulse-based activation, slot toggles, insertion order and comparator behavior described here come from Mojang’s 1.21 documentation and snapshot specifications. Redstone edge cases can change between Java and Bedrock releases, and snapshot behavior is not a substitute for the release notes of the version you are playing. Confirm the current edition and release when copying a timing-sensitive design, especially one that depends on a particular clock interval or hopper interaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I craft a Crafter in Minecraft 1.21?
Use five iron ingots, two redstone dust, one crafting table and one dropper in a crafting table to make one Crafter.
What activates a Crafter?
A new redstone pulse activates one crafting attempt. A button, pressure plate, lever transition or clock can provide the pulse; continuous power does not repeatedly craft.

Why are hopper items going into the wrong Crafter slots?
Insertion scans enabled slots from left to right and then top to bottom. Disable every unused position, or use separate controlled input lines for shaped recipes.
Where should the output hopper go on a Crafter?
Put it directly against the Crafter’s front face, the side from which the result ejects. If the hopper is underneath, the Crafter must be facing downward into it.
Can I remove the output from the Crafter interface?
No. The upper-right area is an output preview, not a manual crafting-table result slot. A redstone pulse ejects the result through the front face.
How many slots can a comparator read on a Crafter?
A comparator outputs strength 0 through 9. Each non-empty or toggled slot contributes one level, allowing a circuit to monitor configuration and contents.
Why does my Crafter skip crafts?
The clock may be pulsing before ingredients arrive. Add repeater delay or slow the clock, check for disabled required slots, and verify that the input hopper is not blocked.

The Bottom Line
Craft the Crafter with 5 iron ingots, 2 redstone dust, 1 crafting table and 1 dropper. Disable unused grid slots, feed the enabled pattern with hoppers or droppers, and send one distinct redstone pulse per attempt. Aim the Crafter’s face at the output hopper, then tune the clock—or gate it with a comparator—so item delivery and storage keep pace.
