Feed a dolphin raw cod or raw salmon, then follow it: the dolphin can lead you to a buried treasure chest, shipwreck, or ocean ruin. Buried treasure is especially valuable because its chest always contains a Heart of the Sea, and buried treasure is the only source of that item. Search non-frozen oceans, avoid attacking the pod, and feed the dolphin again if it stops before reaching a structure.

What dolphins do in Minecraft
Minecraft dolphins are neutral ocean mobs with a treasure-finding interaction rather than a conventional permanent-pet system. When you feed one raw cod or raw salmon, it swims toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruin. The interaction also increases the dolphin’s trust; the amount you feed affects how much that trust changes.

Why follow a dolphin to buried treasure?
Every buried treasure chest contains a Heart of the Sea. Buried treasure is the only source of the Heart of the Sea, and the item cannot be crafted or traded. A Heart of the Sea is used to craft a Conduit, making dolphin-led treasure hunting one of the game’s renewable ways to pursue that item when you do not already have a treasure map.

You can also find buried treasure by following the red X on a buried treasure map obtained from a shipwreck or ocean ruin. The dolphin method is useful when you have found a dolphin but do not yet have a map, or when you want the mob itself to identify a nearby structure.
Where dolphins spawn
Dolphins spawn in oceans that are not frozen. The Minecraft Wiki identifies frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean as exceptions. Some fan guides publish narrower biome lists or disagree about cold-ocean coverage, so use the broader non-frozen-ocean rule rather than assuming that one particular warm-water list is complete.

If you are searching manually, scan open water in a non-frozen ocean and look for a pod before committing to a long underwater expedition. The exact spawn presentation can vary with world generation and game version, but the non-frozen-ocean rule is the reliable starting point.
Which fish should you feed?
Use raw cod or raw salmon. These are the two feeding items described by the Minecraft Wiki and the safest choices for Java or Bedrock play. Do not rely on a guide that lists tropical fish or pufferfish unless you have verified that behavior in the exact version you are playing: some fan guides include those fish, while other references say only raw cod and raw salmon are accepted.

Carry both cod or salmon and keep a reserve. Feeding is not a one-time guarantee that the dolphin will travel directly to the chest you want; if it stops, the documented remedy is to feed it again.
How to use a dolphin to find treasure
- Enter a non-frozen ocean. Search the open water until you locate a dolphin or pod. Frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are the documented exceptions.
- Put raw cod or raw salmon in your hand. Use one of those two fish rather than relying on the disputed tropical-fish or pufferfish lists.
- Feed the dolphin. Use the normal interaction control for your edition while holding the raw fish. Feeding raises its trust, with the amount fed affecting the change.
- Watch its movement. After feeding, the dolphin swims toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruin. Follow from a safe distance so you can keep track of it in open water.
- Search the destination. The target may be a structure rather than a buried treasure chest. Check shipwrecks and ocean ruins as well as sand, gravel, or other terrain where a buried chest may be concealed.
- Feed it again if it stops early. The Minecraft Wiki’s achievement guidance recommends feeding again until the dolphin leads you to an ocean ruin or shipwreck when it has stopped without completing the lead.
- Decide what to do after opening a chest. Once a chest is broken, the dolphin looks for another structure with an intact chest. That lets the same interaction become a search for a new target instead of ending permanently at the first chest.
What to do when the dolphin stops
It pauses before reaching a structure
Feed the dolphin another raw cod or raw salmon and continue following. A stopped dolphin is not proof that no treasure exists; the documented guidance is to repeat the feeding interaction until it leads you to a shipwreck or ocean ruin.

Check whether the target is a shipwreck or ocean ruin rather than buried treasure. If the structure has an intact chest, search its compartments and surrounding terrain carefully. The dolphin is selecting a nearby structure category, not promising that every lead ends at a visible buried chest.
You already broke the chest
Breaking a chest causes the dolphin to search for a new structure with an intact chest. Move with it and be prepared to repeat the fish interaction if it stops again.

The dolphin will not lead anywhere
Confirm that you are holding raw cod or raw salmon, that you are in a non-frozen ocean, and that you have not attacked the dolphin. The broader fish lists found in fan guides are not established consistently, so substitute fish may fail. If the dolphin was injured and survived, its pod may also be hostile, which prevents a safe treasure run.
Never attack a dolphin
Attacking a dolphin without killing it in one blow triggers a pod-wide counterattack. The dolphins that become hostile remain hostile even if you feed them afterward. The safest rule is simple: do not strike a dolphin while trying to use it as a guide. Keep weapons away from the interaction and avoid accidental hits while swimming around the pod.

If you have already hit one and it survived, feeding is not a reset button. Leave the hostile pod alone and find another dolphin rather than attempting to repair the relationship with more fish.
Dolphin leading versus a buried treasure map

The two approaches complement each other. A map gives you a marked red X, while a dolphin can point you toward a nearby structure when you have no map or want to search a new area. Neither method changes the contents of a buried treasure chest: the Heart of the Sea is present in every buried treasure chest.

Java and Bedrock edition notes
Dolphins arrived in the 2018 Update Aquatic. Java Edition 1.13 added the fish-leading behavior and the Dolphin’s Grace effect. Bedrock Edition 1.4.0 introduced the Heart of the Sea; at that point the item initially had no use, before a Conduit recipe was planned.

Check the behavior in your current edition and version when a guide claims a specific biome, feeding item, or achievement condition.
The Bedrock “Echolocation” achievement
Search-result listings describe a Bedrock achievement called “Echolocation,” earned by feeding a befriended dolphin a raw fish so it leads you to an underwater structure. Because the underlying achievement page was not confirmed in the available evidence, treat the name and exact requirement as version-dependent and verify it in the current Bedrock achievement list. No Java-specific equivalent was confirmed.

- Carry raw cod or raw salmon, with extra fish for a second feeding.
- Search non-frozen oceans first; frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are exceptions.
- Keep your weapon from the interaction slot to prevent an accidental hit.
- Expect a shipwreck or ocean ruin as well as buried treasure.
- Bring enough underwater-survival equipment to inspect a structure and its surrounding terrain.
- Remember that opening a chest makes the dolphin seek another intact chest-bearing structure.
Common misconceptions
“Feeding any fish tames a dolphin.”
The established interaction uses raw cod or raw salmon to raise trust and trigger a structure lead. Treat claims about tropical fish or pufferfish as unconfirmed rather than as universal rules.

“Every dolphin leads straight to a Heart of the Sea.”
A dolphin leads to the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck, or ocean ruin. Only the buried-treasure outcome guarantees the Heart of the Sea, because every buried treasure chest contains one.
“A dolphin is safe to hit once if I feed it afterward.”
Not reliably. An attack that does not kill the dolphin in one blow can make the entire pod hostile, and feeding afterward does not remove that hostility.
“A frozen ocean is just as good as any other ocean.”
Frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are specifically identified as dolphin-spawn exceptions. Move to a non-frozen ocean before spending time searching.
The shortest reliable route
For a dependable attempt, travel to a non-frozen ocean, locate a dolphin, and feed it raw cod or raw salmon. Follow it to the structure it selects, search for the chest, and feed it again if it stops before leading you to a target. Leave the pod alone if any dolphin becomes hostile. When the destination is buried treasure, collect the Heart of the Sea; when it is a shipwreck or ocean ruin, use the structure as the next opportunity to obtain a map or continue searching.
